Friday night thread - too tired for.......

My very first Friday night thread Grin

I am posting and then lurking as this week I have had an angiogram and diagnosis of Thoracic Outlet Syndrome. I'm booked in for a rib removal operation in September so am resting - still!

DH is struggling with the concept of me having major surgery. We are not going to be able to go anywhere on holiday as I wouldn't get insurance. We will try to go to Legoland and stay a night in a Travelodge. I can do lots of sitting down reading while they go on the rides :)

Ds has been going to holiday club this week and spending most of the time by himself but seems to have enjoyed himself.

One revelation has been that we bought him 3 golf lessons through Groupon. He has had the first and was a complete natural Grin Am so pleased for my dyspraxic little boy Grin

hi ben10, sorry to hear about your need for surgery but great news about your son finding his strength at golf.

My 18 year old dyspraxic and dyslexic son passed his theory test after six or seven attempts on wednesday, hooray!

Bit of a strange week with the youngest ds who has cp, a trip to great ormond street saw him scream the place down when having xrays but a trip to the theme park saw him extremely keen to go on the rollercoasters for the first time......he seems to so distrust hospitals, poor thing - he has a week long stay and fairly significant surgery planned for a few weeks time.

Hope you enjoy Legoland :)

Hi Ben10. Your DX sounds 'interesting' and the rib removal unpleasant. What's the long term likelihood of holidays and the like? Are you going to be a golfing 'widow.'

Very quiet week here. I always try to do very little in the first week of the holidays, just go blahh! DS1 has gone to France for a week with his friend's family so it's just been the 3 of us in the day. Got new school shoes done and went to see HP and a trip to the park, with DS2 wanting to stay at home for all of it. (sigh)

Hi Jelly, I think I'd prefer rollercoasters to hospital, if I'm honest!

Well done on the theory test, when's his practical test? Can't quite imagine DS2 driving, I think he might see it as a game.

Well i am hoping to be able to get back to work in November- ish. That will be a year off work Shock The operation has an 80% success rate and the surgeon isn't sure that it will fix me but we'll have to see. My rib is compressing the left artery 100% and the right side 90% when I raise my arms so I just need to at least get the symptomatic side fixed. I am getting worse not better just sitting at home and I can't do nothing forever............

Hopefully holidays will be on the horizon for next summer. I wouldn't mind being a golf widow TBH. Sounds a perfect unsociable sport for DS Grin

Wow to the roller coasters. THat is an achievement as is the theory test. I also can't imagine DS driving..........

yes I guess me too but of all the invasive horrible things he's had to have done, an xray - really can't see why he got so spooked and then the lady said he had to have them done again as she hadn't put the scale onto the xrays!

I couldn't have imagined my son driving either not that long ago and he was so despairing about failing so many times but he persevered and I'm very proud that he didn't give up as he would have due to low self esteem previously!

Hope your ds2 is more keen next week to join in, how old is he?

DS2 is 11 and has ASD. He'd much prefer to stay home and play on his iPod and computer than do anything at all healthy!

My 5 year old is laptop mad too, we struggle sometimes to get him to do other things too but at other times (risking sounding like a rubbish parent here) I am quite grateful that there is something he can do alone and that he likes, although in all honesty I do think we let him spend too much time on it some days.

Oh yes, the guilt! Grin The third and favourite parent has been the computer since he was 2! Getting him an iPod touch last year was both a blessing (in waiting rooms, airports, long car journeys) and a curse (getting him to actually want to do anything else)

Hi been a good week for dd2 she has been discharged from the CDC nursery group! Although still having pyschologist, music therapy and salt and they've decided that she's behind on gross motor so still needs physio but all in all good news. But I do feel a little lost as the weekly nursey group has been big part of our life for last year.
I saw an amazing sight in swimming pool today but that's another story on AIBU! Lol

Hi All, thought I'd stop in tonight.
DS has his appt with the school paed next week. I'm still waiting for the letter I was promised from the ed-psych to take with us. Other than that, its just been a bit disappointing that my DCs are off school and I'm still stuck in work. Bah humbug!

I've been in my voluntary job at a charity shop for about 2 weeks now. They've been fab about my sight, showed me all the fire exits etc on my first day, and when things need copying out that are handwritten (donation info into the receipt book etc) someone is always nice enough to do it while I work the till as I'm not great at reading handwriting.

I've booked a holiday to Cyprus in October with my best friend! Staying in a relative's apartment, flying with Easyjet from Manchester. I'm so excited, it's the bravest thing I've ever done, first time away without school or my family, same for her.

I'm happy, because she knows me, knows my eyesight problems and won't push me into things I'm not comfortable with.

Got the optician on Tuesday, am expecting to be told my sight has deteriorated :(

And that could mean £200 spent on new lenses to go in an old pair of frames :(

Babyheave, it'll be brilliant, I'm sure, I can't wait.

I'm having an inward battle at the moment. I don't like showing/admitting I've got a disability, albeit a mild one. But, I've had a few occasions where I feel like a symbol, or ID cane would be useful to me. I know you're not supposed to use those ones to guide you, but it'd be helpful on grass or in the dark, and useful to hold when crossing roads or getting onto/off of buses.

But that'd mean showing the world my disability and I don't like that idea...

Evening, just stopping by as I am not only ridiculously stacked out with stuff to do tonight - but ridiculously exhausted in equal measure.

Ben10, pleased to hear they've finally identified the problem and can do something about it, but sorry to hear it means major surgery. If you do go to Legoland, look at one of the deals they do with the Grange Hotel Bracknell - it wasn't much different to the Travelodge price when we went and so much nicer. Its still a budget hotel and a little tired around the edges, but has a much nicer, calmer atmosphere than a Travelodge imho.

Another stressful week here - dd has had tonsillitis with temps spiking over 40 at times. Just when we were about to rush her to the ooh doc the fever broke and she's been much better today.

Good news on the dog front - got the biopsy results today and its not cancer! I was so relieved I came off the phone and cried. Blush It seems it a rare type of cellulitis, most likely caused by a foreign body such as a splinter. She just needs another two weeks of antibiotics and anti-inflammatories and should be right as rain. She's back in at the vets tomorrow for a quick check, as she's been a bit subdued today compared with yesterday and woke us up howling at 6am, which is something she never does. Its most likely because they stopped the antibiotics after her appointment tomorrow, so the infection had started to rise again, but we have the new course now, so fingers crossed.

Finally, I have now lost 21lbs since I started my diet (14th June) - 19 since I started properly weighing-in and logging it. Hoping it doesn't all go to pot on holiday. I do intend to be pretty strict, allowing myself just a glass of wine on a couple of evenings and one meal out at my favourite restaurant, but have planned lots of nice healthy meals as well, so hopefully I should at least maintain rather than gain.

Sorry not to have read more of the thread - I did try, but it just wasn't going in.

Hi Lollipop. Sounds like a great holiday, good for your confidence, too. Does it feel like a really big step getting a white cane? I suppose it makes your disability more obvious. Can you get something foldable and discrete that you can put in your bag fir when you don't need it?

I will get something foldable, if I get anything. I'm not falling over or hurting myself yet so I'm holding out! Stubborn thing that I am :) .

I just wish that bus drivers wouldn't a) look me up and down when I get on with my bus pass and b) wouldn't drive off before I've found a seat! It throws me off balance and I'm reaching for the nearest solid object!

I think I'll have a quiet word with the optician, see what he thinks, but I still live at home and so my parents are encouraging me to continue as I am because it's great I don't let my sight rule my life. If things get worse though, I'll get one when I feel it's right.

As for the holiday, I'm just worried about getting through the airport, Manchester's a big one and I've not been abroad for 3 years or so, so I think I've forgotten what you have to do! :)

Moose, great news about your four legged friend! Still nasty, though, hope the antibiotics clear it up quickly. Well done on the weight loss. I need something to inspire me to get back on a diet. It's getting a bit silly.

zzzzz, I had to buy the next size up cossie this year, but not sure about the local pool after Chundle's story. Might wait until I hit the beach at the end of August. Glad your DS is making a leap. They do seem to leap and plateau, these boys.

Moosemama, the Grange looks ideal for us and even includes breakfast during the summer holidays. I can also cancel up until midnight of the day of check in if I am unable to go, Thank you.

You're welcome Ben, as I said, it is a bit tired round the edges and there aren't any nice views, but it was perfect for us.

We went for an apartment (£35 upgrade) so the dcs were in their own room, on the other side of glass doors and we had a kitchenette to make our own evening meal and picnic for the second day in. It was great to be able to watch a film in the evening and keep an eye on the dcs without having to spend the evening whispering and reading so that we didn't wake them.

Hope you have a fantastic time. Smile

Hello guys, (we are at nanny's for the weekend, so missed the friday night thread, but just wanted to say Hi.)

sign household has been busy, but little sign has been a star at the ASD playscheme, and managed to wait for his go on the trampline at the sports group really well.... and I have applied for a job! I didn't intend to... (In that I wasn't looking, but came accross one that looked like it was written for me, and they were open to job share... so I thought, well why not! ) so it is is wait and see......
