Autism - Vitamin B6, Magnesuim, Zinc?

guyshahar · 21/06/2011 15:32

Hi - I have read in "Optimum Nutritian for your Child's Mind" - and then backed up in other places - that autism symptoms show great improvement when these supplements are used together. However, it does not discuss doses, or where to find these supplements (which would need to be non-tablets as my son does not chew or swallow solids).

Does anyone have any experience of using these, and of the results? What are the correct doses and what products are recommended?

Elsewhere, I read that when DMG (Di-methyl-glycine!!!) is added to the above, the results are even better. But I don't know what this is or where to find it. Does anyone else?

Please let us know how you get on Ben10, I will have to wait for mine till end of July ( a friend is bringing them over for me from the UK).

wendihouse22 · 23/06/2011 15:34

Mine's arrived this morning.... only ordered it yesterday. Will have to check with ds's psychiatrist that it won't interact with his meds. He's only been on Risperidone for 3 weeks but hate giving it to him.

The internet company must be wondering what's going on?!!

nadia77 · 23/06/2011 16:41

thank you i kust placed order i have also ordered nordics omega 369 anyone tried these?

nadia77 · 23/06/2011 16:42

sorry mistyped *just

blueShark · 24/06/2011 09:25

I also reintroduced it yesterday and this morning for the first time DS took the dose from the syringe, I didnt have to hide it in a drink, then again it doesnt taste bad :)

I was going to say although the dose says 7.5 ml for under 6y old, if you have a taller and bigger than average DC you may need to up that a bit, DS takes 10ml (so 5ml twice a day) now as he is taller than 6y olds and weights 50lb. There is a very helpful agent on the website that will help you if in doubt how much is the right amount to give.

mumgoingcrazy · 24/06/2011 10:35

Ours arrived yesterday so first dose was this morning. How quickly is it to get into the system?

Very excited by this, thank you for recommending it x

blueShark · 24/06/2011 11:38

I noticed improvements after a week and even more after the first bottle. Let me know how you get on x

oddgirl · 24/06/2011 15:52

Blueshark-did you notice any hyperactivity when you started this-DS has had 3 doses and is bouncing off the walls!Talking really loudly and continuously talking. Obviously will discontinue but was wondering if this can happen and gets better!
Thanks!

blueShark · 24/06/2011 21:35

all I know is DMG improves brain function, increasing focus and alertness. Physical stamina is increased when supplementing with DMG hence the hyperactovity? Perhaps reevaluate the dose or reduce it in the first week? How much are you giving to DS, how old is he and is he bigger or smaller for age?

I would be cautious of attributing so much to the DMG after only 3 doses to be honest. I would document everything he's doing for at least a week, (unless he gets any more hyper then he already is in the next couple days, and if that happened then I'd stop it.) He may need to get used to it, and he hasn't had a chance to after 3 doses.

For us it sorted out the hyperactivity for good but I gave it a week to start evaluating the results. HTH

oddgirl - forgot to add last night that everyone reacts different when the body is adjusting to the new vitamin levels. The other night for the first time I tried epsom salts and DS who has uninterrupted sleep of 11 hours and takes him max 15 mins to fall asleep, was down at his usual 8pm didnt fall asleep until just before 10 and woke up twice throughout the night for no reason :S

Havent tried the salts since will do tonight again but reduce the dose and see how he copes.

pigletmania · 25/06/2011 10:02

Brill Bluesharkce ordered some this week, came on Thursday so started giving it on Thursday. Its a small price to pay if you do notice a difference. As dd is 4 and about 21kg I am just doing the half a tablespoon at the moment.

pigletmania · 25/06/2011 10:03

dd is average build I would say, she is not big and not small

blueShark · 25/06/2011 11:42

best is to check with the agents on the website Piglet, there is a chat option in the bottom right corner and he was very helpful when I questioned about the dose.

DS just turned 5 and is 23.5kg but tall for age hence I am giving him twice a day 5ml, a bit over the 7.5ml as per the instruction on the bottle.

pigletmania · 25/06/2011 15:22

Hi blueshark I have started giving dd half a tablespoon as recommended for her age on the bottle and see how it goes.

nadia77 · 25/06/2011 20:00

i just got mine and given about 5mls! hopefully he wont be hyper!

blueShark · 25/06/2011 21:44

I do measurements in ml, my full spoon is hardly 10ml so half spoon will not be even 5ml. The bottle says 7.5ml for under 6y old and always best to give reduced dose in the first week to let the body adjust to the vitamin levels slowly.

I suppose with every treatman whether diet, biomedical, behavioral the symptoms get worse before they get better so I would definitely stick to at least a week or so. Having said that I gave DS epsom salt bath for second time tonight after all the 'drama' the first night so dreading the evening. I really need my undisturbed night sleep Wink

bochead · 26/06/2011 08:54

Can I just thank you for the link - so much easier giving one supplement as a liquid than half a dozen ; )

I'm going to wait to the summer holidays to introduce so if it is a case of "worse before better" we get over the worst without the added stress of school.

oddgirl · 26/06/2011 09:11

A guy from the company kindly contacted me and said hyperactivity (particularly the excessive talking) can be experienced (rare though) and is a sign of too much methylene. I kept DS off it for the weekend and I plan to try again next week with halving the dose. he also mentioned giving more folinic acid and B12 with it.
Will let you know how it goes. Took around 24 hours for DS to stop talking incessently and in a VERY loud voice. These are both totally new traits for him so I do think we may have overdone it! As Blueshark says sometimes we have seen worse before better so fingers crossed.
Thanks as always ladies for the support and advice x

wendihouse22 · 26/06/2011 10:06

Reading this with interest. I can't start until we've seen ds psychiatrist next week. My son is not hyper, ever, so should ne interesting to see what happens.

He has ASD, OCD and Tourettes verbal tic.

blueShark · 26/06/2011 10:52

bochead you welcome. I was so pleased when I came across it last year also as I was tired of crashing tablets and mix with meals and drinks and ensure DS has eaten it all. And when you open the capsules or crash tablets the odor is awful! this one doesnt smell and tastes ok, DS now takes it happily even when not mixed in drink. DH jokes he wishes it had omegas and we are all set for the day :)
oddgirl I am pleased the guy gave you good advice, I dont know much about supplements and can only speak from our experience hence I suggested you contact them.

unpa1dcar3r · 26/06/2011 18:19

OK so I've placed my order for one bottle. My questions are
A) being as I have to share it between the 2 boys and therefore only half the length of time would this be long enough to see good effects?
B) does anyone know if they do it in tablet form (as younger DS doesn't like liquid medicine so might have a battle there)?

nadia77 · 26/06/2011 18:58

it's a good idea to seperate childrens medicine i dont know i do that, maybe you'll have to get a second bottle because it does say you notice the effects more after 1 bottle better ask blue shark

unpa1dcar3r · 26/06/2011 19:45

Thanks Nadia. I wondered whether to order 2 bottles but thought as it's expensive I'll try the one first...
I did ask them on their site if they do tablet form, I guess they'll let me know after the weekend.

blueShark · 27/06/2011 09:13

unpa1dcar3r all I can say is we saw improvements within days and def a week and when we finished the bottle saw real difference. Speak to the guys from the website who will be able to give you more specialist advice, I only speak from mums experience but the magic formula really worked for us and I have re introduced it. DS is like an angel most times :)

wendihouse22 · 27/06/2011 13:30

Talking about keeping a sense of humour....

Anyone see the film "Dirty Filthy Love"? Has Michael Sheen (the welshman who plays Tony Blair quite often). Anyway, it's based on a true story and I saw it many years ago. Laughed like a drain, at the time. Of course, it's not QUITE so funny now but would recommend.

OP, I did go to a group thing a couple of times but we made bird feeders and it wasn't for me. I might be a bit shallow, don't know! The second time I went, I found it all a bit depressing, to be honest. And, because my ds was only doing a 3 hr school day, at that time, I just didn't have the time in the day to allocate. He's back in school almost full time again now, so I ought to make an effort. My own fault really, I guess. I can't really join in with the mums at the school gate cause they're already established and seem always to be organising get togethers and sleepovers and cinema trips and the like and my ds can't do those things.

I do hope you can get the statement. So many people will try to tell you it's not necessary but it is.
