Autism - Vitamin B6, Magnesuim, Zinc?

Hi - I have read in "Optimum Nutritian for your Child's Mind" - and then backed up in other places - that autism symptoms show great improvement when these supplements are used together. However, it does not discuss doses, or where to find these supplements (which would need to be non-tablets as my son does not chew or swallow solids).

Does anyone have any experience of using these, and of the results? What are the correct doses and what products are recommended?

Elsewhere, I read that when DMG (Di-methyl-glycine!!!) is added to the above, the results are even better. But I don't know what this is or where to find it. Does anyone else?

Thank you :)

Just considering whether to give it to him prior to his EP assessment on Monday - I want him to prove what he is capable of outside a classroom situation - think he will get lots of BB in preparation Grin

blueShark · 07/07/2011 13:55

DS also has his first CELF SALT assessment done in school next week so I feel like doubling the dose Grin

I wouldnt give it before dx assessment but certainly with EP as most our kids are very capable but with their behavior in the way are not able to show their full potential.

Great, my thoughts exactly. DS is now really in a routine (hmm, yet another autistic trait) with taking it, I'm pleased that he takes it in juice so I can trick him into not taking it over the weekend Grin

Having read all the rave reviews here I'm about to order some of these, but have a quick Q: do the capsules taste horrid? If DS won't eat them then it's a waste of money.

unpa1dcar3r · 08/07/2011 21:48

Well the capsules would be swallowed whole Oodles. Otherwise it's the liquid medicine.
I'm going for the capsules next time; apparently they also have something which helps them concentrate.

I have started ds on half the recommended dose 3 days ago, so far have not noticed any difference. He seemed a bit quieter today, but it may be due to lack of sleep. I intend to keep him on half doze for a week and then increase it to fll dose, just in case there is any negative reaction.

chocjunkie · 24/07/2011 16:39

started DD about 2 weeks ago. I haven't notices any difference in DD whatsoever - neither negative nor positive..

but interestingly nursery remarked on Friday that she they have found her a bit better in general (listening better to instructions, concentrating a bit more on things she is doing) for the last days... so will see.

@yuckythingsonthefloor - we never had these kind of tests. have asked but GP + paed but both fobbed us off so I am basically just trying my chance with this stuff.

unpa1dcar3r · 24/07/2011 18:27

Think as it's only supplements it should not need a test (unless there is somemedical condition which calls for one I suppose)

Major diff with eldest; last week he got thrown from a galloping horse at his RDA, landed badly and I decided to get him checked at A&E as he has low muscle tone and lax bones...
He sat with a room chockabloc with others, finally got to see doc (after I explained he was disabled etc) after about 2 hrs, let doc examine him top to bottom, take BP, temp in ear, prodded all over...then let radiographers take 8 x rays- then had BP done again.
Spoke to doc nicely, told him what happened ("Fell off horse, hurt bum!!!") when questioned (didn't want mum or dad to say!)
Was amazing, totally awesome throughout, was there 4.5 hrs in all and he was a star despite being anxiours and starving.

Last time we had need to take him hosp he flipped, ran away, hid under tables wouldnt let anyone near him...even me or dad and screamed the hospital down.

Bit of a difference me thinks!!! Just started little one on capsules. Not noticed owt yet but early days and he's also on other stuff.
Smile

yucky we've been using these vitamins for few weeks now, i have also considered having my ds tested for vitamin deficiences but my gp was much nicer she said bring him in and she'll give us the forms to get it done, my son was bouncing off the walls! litreally so we got advice from the web site cut dose in half even though he is very big for his age and increased slowly now his fine with it, nursery have said he issitting down more and participating in activities with his peers we did have episodes of disturbed sleeping pattern, hyperactivity, he was just a different person but now he is fine.

blueShark · 25/07/2011 11:20

I reintroduced the BB DMG for nearly a month now and my parents highly commented on DS cooperating better and understanding non verbal instructions (before he wouldnt always care to look at you when speaking) and now even with the language barrier (granparents dont speak English) they have no difficulties babysitting during all hours of the day, put him to sleep, bath, trips to park and bike rides...which is giving me a lovely break. He is more cooperative at the RRT exercises we do daily and the SIT and my parents have also been gobsmacked he can now sit and attend to table top (ABA/VB) activities for 45-60 mins at a time. So he is def a different boy.

Hi, just wanted update on ds. We started ds on full dose after giving half dose for a week, well we noticed a complete change in his behaviour. Ds is normally pretty compliant, but we had a week of crying about little things like being told to brush teeth ( I am aware it's a battle for some people, no offence), he was whinging about everything. He refused to eat, sleep, put clothes on etc ( not usually a problem for us). So we are back to half dose now and ds is settling down well again in terms of compliance. So although we are yet to see a positive change, we have seen the negative side of it already. We are still continuing with it, if it can effect so much with increased dose, then we just need to work out the right dose Smile.

Thank you bdaonion, it will be really handy for next order.

sphil · 13/08/2011 13:21

Thanks for that - Ds2 has been on half dose for a number of weeks ( almost a bottles worth) and we've seen some very encouraging signs, but also some increased stimming (verbal and physical) about which Ive posted separately. Ive just increased the dose but am watching him very carefully.

Useful info about supplier - thanks!
