Does this work for people who only need to lose a ‘bit’ of weight?

I need to lose about a stone and a bit. I heard from someone that it’s great for people who have an unhealthy diet and have a good bit to lose. I eat well just eat too much! I also like to have about 6 glasses of wine at weekend. Is this possible?

really sick of calorie counting

I started slimming world again 4 weeks ago- I need to lose about 22lbs. I don’t go to a group or anything, I just do it myself at home as have all the books etc from before and there are also some very helpful Facebook pages. I weigh myself at the same time each week.

I have stuck to the plan religiously but have had 1 day a week where I’ve relaxed the rules slightly.

So far I have lost 9lbs.

It’s easy to follow- more a question of getting organised.
Although you can have unlimited pasta/potato/rice, I try not to eat them twice in one day- eg I won’t have a jacket potato for lunch if I’m planning to have mashed potato for tea etc. I try to limit the bread to every other day.

I still have treats- my nemesis is crisps and wine! But I don’t feel too deprived as you can still plan them into the day as part of the syns (or swips as they are now known as). I save wine to have on a weekend day.

I last did SW 9 years ago and it took 3 months to lose a stone and a half. I did keep it off for quite a while as tried to stick loosely to the plan afterwards but the past couple of years I’ve been terrible for grazing and probably drinking more alcohol.

I’ve definitely had to think more about food choices since being back on it, so going forwards will build this back into daily life and hopefully maintain the healthier weight.

dublingirlnew · 30/03/2026 08:54

Thanks for that! Ok I’ve just contacted my local class to start. I’m so sick of calorie counting and failing!

Yes, there isn’t any calorie counting as such so a bit easier.
Theres a little bit of weighing food but not too much and it is worth it.

I’ve found it good with a family as I can still eat so many normal meals- just making my own chips and swapping a white roll for a wholemeal one, that type of thing.

The key is definitely planning- but I try to just think a few days ahead at a time to stop it becoming overwhelming.

SirChenjins · 30/03/2026 10:01

Yes it worked for me - I had a stone to lose and found it worked really well. I couldn't be bothered with calorie counting so found SW really easy. Just stick to the plan and don't mess about with it - it's basically high protein, low carbs, with a few small treats.

JohnWickAteMyHamster · 30/03/2026 10:06

Slimming world works brilliantly for me if I stick to it completely - which is what I find really tricky. There's not a lot of flexibility for being busy / out and about a lot. I did it when my daughter was small and I was at home a lot, had time to cook from scratch etc.
I loved it as a plan, you can eat well and not feel hungry, and lose weight! But there's not much flexibility for eating out, having a drink etc. and for me as soon as I had one day "off plan" it ruined the week and I wouldn't lose anything.
During lockdown I did SW online and lost loads 😀 as I had nowhere to go and nothing but time to food prep...
I calorie count now to maintain as I can "earn" more calories if I need them by going for a long walk or a run 🤪 and I can grab a sandwich from Greggs if I need to at lunchtime, I don't have time to be making pasta salads everyday!

JohnWickAteMyHamster · 30/03/2026 10:07

Just to add I ate loads healthier on slimming world than I do counting calories! I ate loads of fruit and veg, way more than I do now. It promotes a very healthy way of eating

dublingirlnew · 30/03/2026 19:07

That’s great to hear as I’ve seen negative stuff online but want to try it myself! Starting tomorrow

That would be great thanks! I’ll let you know how I get on tonight! How long have you been doing it?

Slimming world works brilliantly I think, but genuinely it’s the wine. I’ve only now managed to lose the weight now I’ve got rid of the wine habit. Sorry to say.
I’ve moved to 0% beer as an occasional alternative x good luck x

Just back from my first meeting! Went well and I’m excited to get started, made the chicken supreme for dinner :)

That sounds nice. I’ll have to look that one up. Diet Coke chicken here with rice- easy to do and everyone liked it.
On 12 hour shifts today and tomorrow so it’s fruit/yoghurt and pesto pasta. Got snacks like hard boiled egg and mini baby and satsumas to keep me going plus the rationed french fry crisps and a fun side pack of party rings!!

pambeesleyhalpert · 05/04/2026 11:15

How’s it going @dublingirlnew? I’m thinking of restarting. I’m just not loosing weight CC and I’ve lost a lot with SW in the past

dublingirlnew · 08/04/2026 09:13

It’s going well but had a heavy weekend with wedding, Easter and another night out so wasn’t expecting much. I followed it every other day. I was down half a lb which is great considering! Looking forward to getting stick in this week. How was your week?

Hi 👋🏻
Can I join please? Started back at SW on Tuesday. I originally joined in 2023 for 18 weeks and lost 1st 10lbs, I managed to loose a further stone by myself, but then an accident and bad habits kept creeping back in. 😞

I weighed in exactly a stone lighter than my original starting weight. I would like to lose 2 to 2 and a half stone, I go away on a big family holiday in 18 weeks, so I'm hoping I can get to my target!

I've been doing well so far, no alcohol this weekend as have nothing planned, so not going to have any. Fingers crossed for a good weigh loss on Tuesday! 🤞🏻

Hope everyone's week is going well 😁

Yes- come join in!

I lost 2lbs last week but this week appear to have put 1lb on. I have a tendency to retain fluid for a few days each month so may be due to that as I have been very good!
I swim 2-3 times a week but haven’t been for this past 2 weeks due to school holidays plus have had a chest infection.
Back on it next week.

cupfinalchaos · 11/04/2026 10:07

A stone and a bit is hard to lose even though it may not be that much. I think it depends on your personality type.. sw would never work for me.

MissCalamity · 11/04/2026 20:46

Loving the name @winesolveseverything 🤣
Is that the first time you've gained? Once you get back on the exercise after the school holidays & into a routine again, I'm sure the weight will start coming off again.
I'm having a small break from exercise, still walking but not anything strenuous as I'm carrying a bit of an injury.
@cupfinalchaos , SW isn't for everyone, I agree. I didn't even attempt to loose weight properly until I was in my 40's and I am surprised it has worked for me, but I couldn't sustain it, hence why I am back on it again!

😂 the name is probably part of the problem! But only having a glass of wine or 2 on a Fri or Saturday night now.
In week 3 I put on half a kilo…but I’m pretty sure it was water retention.
It will be lots easier from next week as children back at school and I can get back into the routine.

Went to the food warehouse today and got a couple of the SW meals- rest of the family had a curry this evening which I couldn’t eat- but the SW chicken tikka was actually very nice and I got one of their naan breads which counts as a B choice. Would recommend.

Definitely this! I have just started and it seems to be just what I wanted - a diet based on eating the right foods and not too nerdy with lettuce and dry toast at every opportunity.. I have just started my fifth week and although I have not managed to stay inside the allowance for more than a couple of days I am well on target for the weight loss. I am a man and we get more allowance and I set a easy target. I have never been on a diet before. I have just realised that I get SW free if I lose 10% of my body weight and I need to lose quite a bit more than that to get my BMI into the "normal" range and stop the NHS calling me overweight. The SW app works brilliantly for me.

dublingirlnew · 14/04/2026 21:32

I was supposed to go to weigh in tonight but didn’t go as wasn’t feeling well so going to attend another class tomorrow. I’m enjoying it but fell off the wagon over the weekend after a heavy night out, have another boozy lunch tomorrow 😬but nothing for three weeks then so going to go hell for leather, I’m really enjoying it though.

i must look out for some of the meals? I love the hifi bars

First weigh in last night, 2.5 lbs off!
I'm away this weekend with friends, so have a feeling it will fall apart a bit, especially with the booze 🙈 I've been promised that we'll do lots of walking to counter balance this!

They have the SW range in Iceland as well, but I've not been in yet, I could do with a few ready meals when I really can't be bothered making anything. Like the other day, I boiled some rice and added in egg, so it was a bit of a scrambled rice, it was alright with salt and pepper, but not something I'd make frequently!!

I'm finding the app helpful as well, I can't believe how many swips are in some things!

Good luck at weigh in everyone!

well done!! That’s awesome.
I’ve just done my weekly weigh and I’ve lost 2.6lbs this week. Quite relieved as it doesn’t feel like I’ve lost anything. I have 100% stuck to the plan this week and been back to the pool too.

Need some inspiration for lunchtimes - Im stuck on a merry go round of pasta or a jacket potato or a sandwich. It’s obviously working but it’s getting a little bit dull.

Im going to make a batch of soup tomorrow - I remember doing it before and I’ve got a couple of easy ones that don’t take long. They can go in the freezer then.

MissCalamity · 23/04/2026 08:24

How's everyone's weight loss going? I lost another 1.5 lbs at weigh in this week. I was very surprised as my weekend consisted of a lot of alcohol 🙈 Although we did end up walking about 10 miles over the course of the weekend so that definitely helped!

Going to the pub tonight for my daughter's birthday, so need to choose well.

I also struggle with lunch ideas, it's been mostly pasta salad at the moment, also making something that all the family will eat rather than having to chuck in some chicken dippers instead 😂
