I just don't believe this really works. I feel like whenever I ask about it everyone insists it works but no one's actually lost anything!

I know there's success stories on the website but not that many. Seems quite hard to find people who've actually lost weight.

So...
How much have you lost?
How long did it take?
Start and current weights?

If you convince me I'll try it!!

I’m following it haphazardly. The main thing it is helping me with is curbing the bad habit foods such as alcohol and crisps, making adjustments to my normal foods etc. My actual meals were already pretty healthy. It’s helping me say no to cake/biscuits at work.

I’ve lost 10lb over six weeks and it probably would have been more following it strictly but being accountable is helping curb the bad habits and that is what I need to do first so I can keep weight off long term.

Mumofgirl · 15/11/2023 13:20

EverythingLouderThanEverythingElse · 17/11/2023 08:03

That's an amazing loss, you should be really proud of yourself!

ch4shirecat1234 · 20/11/2023 13:53

would you say slimming world is for short term or long term results?

imperialqueen · 20/11/2023 14:35

Mumofgirl - congratulations on your loss, that is a fantastic amount.

I would say for a lot of people it's short term in that they are very successful in losing weight, but then stop going to SW meetings and end up putting the weight back on.

If you want any weight loss, via any method really, to be long term you have to change the way you eat and stick to it.

Yorkshiredolls · 20/11/2023 14:43

Hi I lost 1.5st in 3 months April-July this year. I was a fairly healthy BMI to start with I was just heavier than I like to be. I have been on SW before but when I got to target and stopped going to meetings the weight slowly goes back on. This time I have kept more or less at target since July. The difference this time is as a target member Im still getting weighed and attending group every 2-3 weeks which keeps me in check. I have not been sticking to the target member plan religiously every week either, I have mad weeks where ill go all out and if enjoy a takeaway, nights out, weekends away etc, and other good weeks where I reign it in again and food optimise 80-90%. Theres no secret to it its just all about Balance.

Kava2019 · 30/11/2023 19:01

It certainly does work you just need to be dedicated and follow the guides until your well read. I'm a former diamond member which means I hit my target weight all be it 5 years ago, I lost 2 stone and kept eating the SW way as I was so much healthier and enjoyed the fact that it didnt feel like a diet. Fellow members at my class lost significantly more weight than I did to hit their target but they did it.
Following childbirth and major digestive problems which have lead to this year to having multiple operations i de ided to lose the weight i had put on since pregnancy, ive recently lost over a stone going back to my SW roots without the class but with another half stone to go I've joined back up online to push me further to target as the last of the weight i find is always the hardest to lose.
SW has certainly been my saviour and has saved me a lot of health issues that have been rectified by the eating plan. Have faith. 😀

Tontostitis · 30/11/2023 19:14

I lost 2 stone 11 and have kept most of it bar a menopausal half stone off for twenty years. I have many SW friends from my group the longest target member has been in target 26 years and there's a couple who've lost 16 stone between them and do all the weigh pay stuff in group they've been in target a few years now. One of my best friends lost 8 and a half stone 10 years ago has had two children and lost all her baby weight both times she's unrecognisable. WW, SW all the groups work if you put the work in and like group support but it's not for everyone. SW is basically eat healthily, move more and don't be a know around holidays. Also limit high calories foods. Balancing CICO is the only way to lose weight SW is just one way of doing it.

Mumofgirl · 06/12/2023 12:58

Thanks all! I did get my 4st award and i'm almost at my 4.5st award now. I was hoping to get to 5st by Christmas but it might just be a bridge too far. Still, i am chuffed to bits with how far i have come. I have about 12st to lose in total so over 1/3 of the way through which is good.

In terms of the long term/short term query, i think that some people treat it as a short term solution with no real changes to their behaviour and eating habits and as a result, they put the weight back on. Those that make a real success of it are those who make permanent changes to their lives and habits and continue to maintain some control and discipline over their eating habits.

Those are my thoughts on it anyway.

nearlyemptynes · 17/01/2024 11:28

I have rejoined and have lost 6 pounds in first two weeks. It works. I have done it multiple times and I am heavier than ever but that is because I haven't stuck to it. If you do it properly it works.

Longlazyday · 22/01/2024 20:43

How to make sustainable change to habits that have embedded over decades. I dread more the pressure of fighting the imprinted desire of embedded habits.

Longlazyday · 22/01/2024 21:32

I’m back … one small change a week.

Longlazyday · 22/01/2024 22:17

And realised the bad habits are equally as unsustainable as the ultra good ones.

Good old fashioned balance

Mumofgirl · 22/03/2024 14:23

Just wanted to update (as it's not something I can talk much about IRL) but I've now lost 6.5st in 38 weeks and feeling great for it!

Meceme · 24/03/2024 10:39

Congratulations @Mumofgirl , thats an amazing achievement. Hope you feel fitter, healthier and proud of yourself.

I got my 3 stone award yesterday. 5 months after getting my 2.5 stone award! It’s taken a lot time but slow and steady and all that lol

Meceme · 24/03/2024 15:18

Thats fab. Well done. Slow and steady is the way to go. It means its becoming a lifestyle rather than a diet. Congratulations

skyeisthelimit · 24/03/2024 15:36

It works but like any diet, it only works if you change your eating habits and change them for good. Like any diet, if you stop following it, you will put the weight back on.

I lost 2 stone a few years ago, but put it all back on by not continuing to eat properly.

But prior to SW I was not eating breakfast, not eating proper meals, lunch would be sandwich/crisps/kitkat type of thing, tea might be cheese & biscuits or a bowl of cereal.

Once I started SW I had breakfast every day, lunch of overnight oats/porridge pot/potatoes and ham/cheese, but most importantly I cooked a proper meal every night of chicken/ham, potatoes, carrots. (I don't like veg/salad so very limited in what I can eat to diet).

I started out using the syns for sweets/crisps etc, then over time realised that it was better to use them for gravy to improve a meal etc. It did change my thinking.

But I didn't need to be a SW member to cut out the crap and eat proper meals. What it did was focus my mind on what I should be doing and what I should cut out. SW also encouraged regular exercise as well .

I would recommend it, but you do need to see it as a long term thing, as any diet should be, you need to maintain once you have lost the weight.

LuluBlakey1 · 23/04/2024 18:50

I joined SW in January 2024 and have lost 2st 7lbs as of today. I think it is pretty straightforward. I am not a fanatic for the plan- I ignore Syns completely. I stick to free food and healthy choices with the occasional 'treat'. I am vegetarian and rarely have a drink. I have definitely upped my walking - there were dares I was doing 2000 steps and I never do fewer than 12,000 now. I think it's pretty much common sense. Like any diet, your head has to be in the right place to do it. I have had the occasional 'treat eg packet of crisps, small chocolate bar, or dessert but mainly stick to the free food plan. Not seeing it as a 'diet' but as a way of eating well for my health.

I am 2st 7lb from target weight, so half-way there in 14 weeks.

chunkyfunkier · 23/04/2024 19:18

IHateLegDay · 12/03/2023 23:54

From experience, it seems that it works as long as you keep up with it.
The second you eat 'normally', the weight comes back on.

A friend lost 10st on SW and unfortunately has regained it all when she stopped SW.

If overweight people (e.g me!) knew how to eat 'normally' then we wouldn't be overweight! So therefore if I follow SW, I lose weight. If I go back to my old 'normal' of grazing on cheese, French bread and butter along with lovely goblets of wine, then yes I'm going to regain it. I have a disordered attitude to food that a weight loss plan is unlikely to cure. The work on my mental approach to food is something I need to learn independently.

As for the OP, I don't think anyone should try to convince you. It's either the right plan for you or it isn't. I'm on my second go and in my first week have lost 3lbs so far. The secret is 'the rule of thirds' (a third veg, a third protein, a third carbs) and be properly hydrated. I've just finished my dinner and had chicken, chips and salad (with feta in my salad...which was SO good). I don't count or weigh stuff apart from cheese, I just try to keep within free foods. It's really easy.

How does it work when you can eat unlimited carbs though? I just don’t get it.

It’s not unlimited. It’s to the point of satisfaction.
So if you have 1/3 meat, beg, pasta and you are still hungry, eat more in the same ratio- fruit salad and low fat crème fraiche, for example.

You don’t get to have unlimited jacket potato, cheese and beans unless you also eat lots of lettuce!

I wouldn’t lose weight on that.

How does it work when you can eat unlimited carbs though? I just don’t get it.

It's limited sugar and fat and encourages lots of veg.

It also encourages exercise.

It does work.

But if you go back to old ways of eating the weight comes back.

If you read their info it does explain how it works.

You can also go to your first meeting (info session) which explains it all.
