I just don't believe this really works. I feel like whenever I ask about it everyone insists it works but no one's actually lost anything!

I know there's success stories on the website but not that many. Seems quite hard to find people who've actually lost weight.

So...
How much have you lost?
How long did it take?
Start and current weights?

If you convince me I'll try it!!

My mum has done Slimming World many times. Every time she loses several stones, but she always puts it back onSad

PaigeMatthews · 11/03/2023 20:52

There will be loads and loads of people telling you've how much they have lost. The problem is the diet is appalling and does nothing to deal with poor eating habits. What does it teach about portion size?

you'd be better off asking people who started slimming world 5 years ago what their starting weight was and how much they weigh now.

Remember it is a business. it is worth their while to have people pile the weight back on. It is a cycle.

mac1974 · 11/03/2023 20:52

It does work, I've had great success with it but when you stop the weight does go back on but that's like any healthy eating plan. I've just rejoined and I'm enjoying it. Like a previous poster, I don't eat the fake foods and make cake out of egg and all that stuff but the basic, healthy eating is good.

PieonaBarm · 11/03/2023 20:53

Joined 23 years ago, when it was red and green days, start weight 16st 2.5lb. Targeted at 11st 8lb but got down to 11st 1lb. Kept it off for 21 years until Covid induced renal failure gave me a 1st 8lb gain so now back loosing it.

It does work but you have to stick to it.

PieonaBarm · 11/03/2023 20:55

Oh and I've never done the crazy cake out of weetabix or pizza base made of Smash. I do also watch portion sizes and use Syns on things like salad cream, honey etc rather than double deckers and curly wurlys.

lovemenomore · 11/03/2023 20:59

Started jan 3rd lost 1stone 10lb so far

nbee84 · 11/03/2023 21:00

Lost 3 stone in 2014 - 13 stone down to 10 stone.
Kept the weight off until lockdown. Went up to 11 stone by Sep 20 and have yo-yo'd between 10.5 and 11.5 since then (without doing sw)
Really ought to go back to slimming world basics.

fruitandfibreg · 11/03/2023 21:06

Started in 2019-

Starting weight in feb- 11st 7lb... I was SHOCKED
Lowest weight on SW in the October-
9st 3lb

It's now a few years later. I had a baby last year put on weight because of that and now back down to 9st 5lb.

I love SW!

fruitandfibreg · 11/03/2023 21:08

Reason k say I was so shocked is because I thought I was about 10st I wasn't expecting to be a stone and a half heavier. Was just in denial

It teaches a lot about portion size!

It teaches foods high in fat and sugar need to be extremely small portions, along with bread and cereal.
Unrefined, unprocessed fresh veg can be eaten in limitless quantities.
Carb heavy foods like potatoes and pasta can be eaten freely, but without anything 'tasty' added people self limit.

It teaches a balance- third of the plate is carbs, a third protein and a third very low cal veg. You are less likely to overeat the protein and carbs if they are eaten alongside a similar amount of leafy veg, and without any sauces.

I agree.

The diet isn't appalling at all,it advocates balance.

I’ve lost 2 stone in 4 months not following it strictly (will need to start strictly) but very happy

MummyInTheNecropolis · 12/03/2023 23:53

My sister lost 8 stone in 2013/14 for her wedding. She’s had 2 babies since then and is still in target, she never regained it. She still goes to group every few weeks or so.

IHateLegDay · 12/03/2023 23:54

From experience, it seems that it works as long as you keep up with it.
The second you eat 'normally', the weight comes back on.

A friend lost 10st on SW and unfortunately has regained it all when she stopped SW.

cailingaelach · 12/03/2023 23:57

I was 11st 12lb four years ago. Got down to 8st 9lb and kept it off.

The same as any diet.

mrsmacmc · 13/03/2023 00:15

Start: 15st 7
Current: 12st 2

Took me 4 months to get target April 2022 and maintaining so far 🤞🏻

The "normal" eating is usually what caused weight gain in the first place though.

If I regularly used a product or a service that worked, and then stopped using it, I wouldn't seek to blame the product or service if my original issue resurfaced.

I started 6 weeks ago at 11st 7, am now 10st 13. Target is 9st. I have been a bit disappointed as other people seem to lose it quicker, but it's not bad going I suppose. When I got my half stone award last week, three others got theirs too and all of them started either 2 or 3 weeks ago!

It depends how much weight you have to lose and how much change the diet plan is. People starting at higher weights tend to lose more quickly as the change in diet is often greater. Slow and steady is often better because you are more likely to maintain the new eating habits. You are still doing well if you are losing slowly.

FiloPasty · 13/03/2023 09:51

I agree that it works if normal eating means bacon sandwiches, loads of butter, processed food and limitless alcohol of course you put weight back on.
the body doesn’t like being in a calorie deficit so it will try and make you put on weight.
I also think that they promote exercise too and cooking from scratch, the amount of cookbooks all promote that.
I’m planning on rejoining next week to lose baby weight.

I thought the most recent research over the last 10 years or so is that fast weight loss is better, although Im not sure if that is for people with very large amounts to lose.

I think research shows that slow weight loss is linked to a greater chance of permanently changing habits so weight loss is more likely to be maintained in the longer term.

RiceOnABike · 13/03/2023 17:58

Just had my weigh in, only half a pound this week, bit disappointed! 8.5 pounds in six weeks currently.

Gymmum82 · 13/03/2023 18:00

6 stone in total. Reached target during Covid and kept it off since then. Haven’t been back to SW but all the weight was lost through them.
I don’t follow as strictly now but still follow a lot of the principles which is basically healthy eating
