Slimming World

Is it normal that the only agenda of the meeting seems to be is going around the room congratulating everyone on their individual loss?

I have been to my local silmming world a few times but all the meeting agenda seems to be is going around the room congratulating everyone on their individual loss (you still worked hard etc, if a gain). I don't feel like I get anything out of the meeting at all. No advice, no talks. Obviously there is the weighing and paying first but the meeting is blah. Anyone else experience this with other meetings or do I just have a weird one??

Mine is really good. Starts off with consultant (who is really funny) giving updates and info, then goes round people talking about losses or gains. You're encouraged to say what's gone well, what hasn't and offer tips and encouragement. Ours is a bit cliquey but I'm not bothered about that and I like to keep myself to myself. I think it's the consultant that makes the difference to a group. Mine should do stand up they are so hilarious.

Oh god I’m going back to sw next week and am forcing myself to stay to the god awful meetings! I used to go to a group where at least 40 people stayed and it was the most boring thing I have ever been through. I just don’t give a shit if anyone else gained or lost and I wonder what on earth my money is paying for! But hopefully the thought of having to tell the group why I maintained or gained will keep me on the straight and narrow! Maybe that is the secret Grin

That's why I went back to being an Online member. I couldn't really get on with anyone either. They never made me feel welcome or spoke to me and they eyed me up when I the consultant announced to the group that I had a 3lb loss and how did I do it.. erm, well I stuck to plan? I am considering joining another group towards my target so I can get a free membership. Theres a new group that has just opened down the road from me (only 10min walk), but it's finding the time to do it as I am a busy working mum. Confused my son wouldn't stay still for 5 mins he would get bored too easily if I had to stay to group.

I thought I’d update my opinion now that I have been going a couple of weeks! So my new group is very small, only 10 people stay to meeting. It’s brilliant! She actually has time to give advice and talk to each person and I’ve actually learnt some new things! So I think the key is to find a tiny group!

Yes and it is boring! I never stayed to group after a while because it was really so boring and an hour and a half drags on and on! That's why I changed back to having a membership Online.

I hated the WW style of preaching stuff to me from the book I had read. I like SW style. We have a large group, but everyone is asked to share helpful tips with each other, share new recipes etc.

I was going to ask what the ww ones are like!

Ours are OK... The consultant tries hard to mix it up, asking people their favourite healthy recipe they cooked this week or any difficult days coming up that they need a strategy for. Ultimately though, I find them a bit dull.

I always pick a fairly random target weight (1-2lbs) and like a pp, I'll meet it by sticking to plan!

What's the points system for? We turn over an odd little flip chat to keep count of who had lost the most weight: one half of the room competes against the other... But there's no prize or anything and I don't feel any loyalty to the people I happen to sit near! Have I missed something? Grin

I've decided to leave as the meetings are like this. I've been using it to keep me on track but I've signed to a gym for 40 a month and saving the 20 I spend on SW will go towards it.

I noticed the gym had scales so I shall weight once a month on those at the end of my membership month.

One thing I noticed with SW was how much people ate. They really took the free food very seriously!

And then with their nights out... it would go something like, "OK so say you're going to have 12 vodka and tonics..." and I'd be thinking TWELVE??? and someone would say, "Doubles, of course..." and they'd all nod, "Yes, of course..." Twenty four drinks in one night???

Team fun tech does my head in. We dislike it at group. My consultant comes to each person but he has a theme and if you say you feel you have a problem then he will help and ask other members if they have advice.

Hated class...all fecking muller lights & mugshots and shitty desserts that taste of sweetener..

I think the leader makes or breaks a group...if they can't manage group members stage whispering over someone else trying to contribute ..Hmm then I lose faith in them.

Online is the way to go for me.

Went to SW and the rep went round individually asking how their week went. I'm not fecking interested in how each individuals week went!!! She seemed very condescending too. I lost very little and it was like attending the dentist every week.

Now at WW with an energetic, bouncy, lively encouraging humorous rep. It's working for me and I've lost a stone in less than three months and feel encouraged to exercise.

@Sosog00d that's why they've started synning sweetener at 0.5 syn a tablespoon and I've seen recipes where desserts ask for half a tub of Canderel sweetener! 🤢 I just absolutely hate desserts filled with sweeteners cos it tastes VILE! It gives me horrible headaches as well cos of the amount of aspartame. I only use natural stevia in my baked oats or cup of tea and that's only a tablespoon, and no more!

If I want a dessert, I wouldn't make it with a tub full of sweeteners cos of how disgusting it tastes but I'd have a proper, full on chocolate and cherry gateau kind of dessert and just draw the line and go back on plan the next day as usual lol.

Sometimes my sw consultant only talks to people who've gained, sometimes they only talk to people who indicate they want to talk during the meeting, sometimes they only talk to people who've lost. A few times they haven't talked to anyone individually. They can always be contacted personally though. Mixing it up like this keeps it interesting.

If feel a bit guilty as our consultant is really nice. But most weeks are completely full.of raffles and the talking you all mention. She calls it therapy? Image therapy?

Problem with it is, there are only so many scenarios and it gets boring. There have been some really interesting ones and (quite rightly) she's recommended a confidential chat. I can see why they might find it useful (the confidential chat I.mean.)

“Oh Brenda, how’s your week been?”

“Well, I had a weekend away at Uncle Steven’s in Portsmouth, so I’ve gained three pounds!”

“Why do you think that is, Brenda?”

Brenda had four pints of Stella on Friday with chips and mushy peas for tea. Then on Saturday, Uncle Steven always cooks a full English breakfast and they always go out for a curry in the evening.....

“Everybody give Brenda a round of applause!”

“So, Marie, I hear it’s not gone well this week?”

“Jenny, you’ve lost three pounds! Well done! (Round of applause) How did you do it? Did you stick to plan?”

“Well, yeah. That’s all really”

HotSauceCommittee leaves SW, still porky, and never to return.

Mine is a bit like this. Consultant is full of all the buzz words. I've been doing really well and they ask how and I say I've been sticking to it.

Other people there aren't losing so much because they're going to the pub twice a week or they keep eating loads of bread or they say once they get to the evening they want to pick at things (cue consultant saying she looooves making slimming world chips if she's still hungry in the evening?!) Once the consultant had a 15 minute conversation with someone who was saying they hadn't lost weight because they couldn't be bothered and she spent soooo long trying to get her to agree to make this certain breakfast (as if it would help) and I wanted to scream 'oh my god just agree to it and we can move on!'

The rest of it is certain members making ridiculous vulgar jokes about 'body magic' and one particular members new boyfriend.

I just look and wait my turn thinking, why don't we all just go out for a walk?

It is definitely my time to leave. Pity as I am plodding on with weight loss but I think going to gym will be better for me and I can weigh myself once a month and I'm not exactly following the plan anyway just "being sensible" (the latter being mainly due to working away so much so I have to eat out/buy a salad, I've no other option, but I can choose sensible things).
