  • I wish.

Morning all,

Hope you find this!

for your rough night Amber.

After a few good ones, we had a crap one too. Up at 1.30, 3, 4.30, 5.30, 6.15........
I think she was a bit overtired last night. Hope we can get her napping better today .

So how were all your nights?

Meg: would second the food thing. DS still doesn't eat a lot (part from peas, sweetcorn and sultanas - what is it with small round food?). Eg yesterday he had half a bowl of porridge, an apple (mostly chewed up and spat out), a bit of roast chicken, some peas, a sausage, some sweetcorn and a couple or rice cakes. And that was a good day. Most food he looks at, pokes and then hurls off his high chair.

Another grim night for us, 2 doses of Calpol between 5 and 10, awake 12ish then 2ish for ages (but I was too tired to get up and find the Calpol for a third dose). Must be teeth but I can't see them coming through yet. This could take some time . Will try supplementing Calpol with Nurofen tonight to see if that works. And then on Weds he has his 1 year jabs, so that'll be fun! At least we're used to waking up atm. It's worse when you've had a good run and then a dreadful night.

Tibs: for your early wakings. Ginger: hope your night improved. I do think teeth are the no. 1 suspect at the moment. The back molars are supposed to come through before the canines.

Amber: glad you had a better night - hope you don't have too stressful a week.

Bunny: that sounds hard. Have you read the No Cry Sleep Solution? She's big on star charts/sleep books for older kids. Worth a try?

tibsy · 15/10/2007 10:16

amber - thanks for that!! will have a proper look through it (dd gone down for a nap guess its that early blardy waking)

EffiePerine · 15/10/2007 10:17

Tibs: I was thinking of trying to wean DS completely after about 18 months, not sure if he'll be up for it though. I should really try night weaning as well, but can't see ift working until he's in his own bed. He rarely feeds during the day, partly cos I'm at work 4 days. If I'm at home I might feed him down for a nap or give him an early evening feed if he's being whingy.

Amberjee · 15/10/2007 10:18

oh i'm glad you say that about peas sultanas and corn EP. i'm not sure if i'm going to bother giving him anything else at the moment. it's just so pointless. yesterday we just skipped breakfast as i couldn't bare it.

tibsy · 15/10/2007 10:18

EP for your 'grim' night.. how many teeth has ds got now? dd has got 8, but i can feel another 2 (bottom) teeth coming...and theyre big uns

EffiePerine · 15/10/2007 10:55

DS has 8 so I think it's those back ones giving him gyp. Amber: have you tried sweetcorn? DS loves it and I figure it's anpther vegetable. He tried some corn on the cob in Fresh and Wild (they has samples cooked and dipped in butter) and it kept him quiet around the whole shop. He was covered in sweetcorn by the end of it, though.

Amberjee · 15/10/2007 11:03

i think 18 months is the very earliest for self weaning i'm afraid.
there are strategies for encouraging weaning though that you can read about. apparently alot of dcs self wean when the mum gets pregnant though, as the taste of the milk changes at that time. or some mums go on to tandem nurse both. don't know if i'd be up for 2 kids on my boobs (plus dh after them!) but i guess by that stage the older child has much reduced nursing needs.

Amberjee · 15/10/2007 11:05

our ds's are quite similar!
he does eat corn on the cob too actually. but not so much the kernels. and sometimes spaghetti is alright. and cucumber is okay too. but that is it.

tibsy · 15/10/2007 11:05

amber, i'd read somewhere that bubs can self wean when mama gets pg as the milk changes think i'd like to have my boobs to myself for a bit first tho

EffiePerine · 15/10/2007 11:06

Ah, DS won't eat pasta. No idea why. Fish is popular - he loved the plaice gougons at the baby cafe

yummybunnymummy · 15/10/2007 11:29

morning! We've had another awful night DS1 is suffering with a chesty cough and sniffle (seems to be going round pre-school) and was up twice before we even went to bed. He was up between 1 and 3.30am feeling grotty, DS2 is teething and has a snuffle so was up 10 times between midnight and 6.30....agh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We both like Elizabeth Pantley's book on the no-cry sleep solution and we have a lovely bedtime routine, the boys have a 5 step chart which they've decorated themselves, they share a room (which they love) its just something is always going on that stops them from sleeping well. Like ds1 is ill and ds2 is teething and then later this week dh is away with work which unsettles them etc..etc.. I tandem feed them both, well ds1 doesn't feed very often now and ds2 was weaning down but as soon as he has a sniffle or teething etc, he likes milk every 30-45 mins...

On a positive note though it couldn't get much worse...(except last week when I didn't actually go to bed one night, they were both under the weather..is was horrific..)

(sorry - feel very self-indulgent going on and on...MIL feels very strongly that everyone who has children suffers from sleep deprivation and that I should simply get on with it and not moan....)

tibsy · 15/10/2007 11:44

YBM - moan away my love, thats what we're here for solidarity in our sleeplessness my absolute respect for complete lack of sleep and tandem feeding, dear lord woman, you are a saint!!!
it does seem like its one thing after the other when theyre titchy doesnt it? and with two, thats just doubly hard. how are they at napping? although i expect the older one has dropped naps? is there anyone to watch them or take them out whilst you have a nap yourself?
chin up lovely

EffiePerine · 15/10/2007 12:23

YBM, you're obv doing a great job. I feel like there are endless probs atm as well - we had massive probs with a growth spurt at about 10 months, plus separation anxiety and now teeth... it doesn't stop! If you have a light sleepers anyway the effect of these things is so much worse - when I hear mums complaining about their babies starting to wake once during the night I have to bite my tongue

And tandem feeding as well - must be tiring for you, tho it would help a lot with colds etc. (and toddler tantrums, I understand). I'm in two minds over weaning: on the one hand I'd like to have a break from it, on the other hand it's a failsafe way of calming DS down and (usually) getting him to sleep so I'm loathe to stop.

EffiePerine · 15/10/2007 12:24

Re the night feeds, could you try drinks in a special cup? Or would that not fool DS2?

MegBusset · 15/10/2007 12:41

Busy morning!

YBM, sounds like you are doing brilliantly. And I'm full of admiration for your tandem feeding

EP, sorry you had a bad night. I have an emergency bottle of Medised tucked away for nights like those

Funnily enough, our lunch actually went quite well. I have given up on spoons altogether as I just end up throwing food away, so it's finger foods all the way. He is so much better with them than he was at 6 months when I first tried BLW -- I just don't think he was ready for it then.

So this lunchtime he ate a bit of a green bean, sucked some asparagus, a teeny bit of baby corn, licked some Philadelphia off a piece of pitta bread, and ate a rice cake and three of those Organix carrot sticks (at the moment the only thing he is guaranteed to eat). Much more like it!

MegBusset · 15/10/2007 12:45

Also, news flash: he can crawl

Amberjee · 15/10/2007 13:16

Meg, that sounds great - he is eating a lot more than my ds atm! i think 6 months is quite early to expect much eating to actually happen.

tibsy · 15/10/2007 13:36

yey for meggy b's crawler...but look out!!

Amberjee · 15/10/2007 14:13

uh oh meg, trouble!

EffiePerine · 15/10/2007 14:27

they speed up really quickly as well! ust wait till he can turn corners. DS getting much better at walking and is now trying to run - should be fun, he's already covered in bruises.

tibsy · 15/10/2007 19:56

yummybunny - i've been thinking, and if dp and i decide to try for another bubs soon, i may like to consider tandem feeding. how have you found it? obviously ok, or you wouldnt be doing it just wondered how you felt during the first few weeks of no 2's life. dd was feeding constantly during that time and it was exhausting. how did you cope with feeding no. 1 as well? how did no.1 feel about you feeding lo as well?
guess i should post on breast/bottle feeding, but am just curious atm.

on a sleep front, dd slept for 2 1/2 hrs today went to bed at 7.15pm.....we'll see what tonight brings
hope there are some good ones out there

Smellmel · 15/10/2007 20:22

I have an 18 month old little boy who for the last 3 months has been waking at 5.20 without fail 7 days a week. Normally a really good sleeper any ideas?

gingerninja · 15/10/2007 20:54

Meg, yay for crawling and eating, he's growing up isn't he? Bless him.

Smellmel, my DD a;ways wakes early and no matter what I do I can't get her back to sleep. 5-5.30 is average but we've had earlier. Plus she wakes at least once during the night too. I'm panicing about the clocks going back so, sorry, I don't have any advice. The 'make sure the room is dark' thing obviously means nothing at this time of year. I only hope for your sake it's a little phase.

Tibsy, something you want to share with us? I think you're amazing if you are considering tandem feeding. I am far to selfish. The women that do it must be mother earth themselves.

Anyway, poor DD has had a temperature and mega upset all day. She really is poorly poor love. She's hardly eaten or drunk anything all day either so I kind of hope that she will wake in the night so I can try and get some milk down her. It's one thing when they don't eat but not drinking is a bit of a worry.

Hope you all have good nights

MegBusset · 15/10/2007 21:01

We had a pg scare this week as my period seems to have vanished... but did a test today and thankfully it was BFN, I was starting to envision myself with a newborn attached to one boob and a 16mo to the other, never able to get up off the sofa!

MegBusset · 15/10/2007 21:02

Ginger poor DD, hope she's better after a good sleep.
