Toddler sleep

What time does your toddler go to bed? My almost two year old doesn't even settle until 9-9.30. He's tired at like 5 and would probably settle then but it's way too early for bed and I know he will be up at 12 partying ha. I know he's overtired but he's a nightmare to settle down, he thinks its a game and will run up and down his bed and not lie down. I am loosing my mind.

My DD is two at the end of the month and she's in bed, asleep by seven at the latest every night. It used to be six but she was waking at 5am. She now wakes around six/ half six.

Abi1987 · 03/03/2018 20:25

How?!! 😀
Can you give me some advice please... What time does she nap and what's your bedtime routine x

From 20m ds has asked to go to bed!!
(massive boast!! Grin)
Sleeps at least 12 hours!
This is my reward for several other dc being total nightmares over the years!

Jemma2907 · 03/03/2018 20:29

My toddler (3 in June) sleeps from 7pm to 6.30am. No naps at all. We cut them out about 6 months ago as we were starting to struggle to get him settled in the evening.

MummyInHeel · 03/03/2018 20:30

Try settling at 6 if he's worn out by 5. If he doesn't sleep, try some music/quiet time upstairs with low light. If he wakes in night you can always gradually go later until that stops. Try a nap after lunch. Good luck, Its not easy!

Jemma2907 · 03/03/2018 20:31

Just to add, he still gets tired at his old naptime (around 2/3pm). I just make sure we have some quiet time then, just watch a bit of tv, have a cuddle. No sleep though.

ineedwine99 · 03/03/2018 20:32

My 18m old goes up between 6:45 and 7, asleep by 7:15, sometimes stands at the stairs saying night night meaning she wants to go up. Wakes up between 7 and 8am
Naps at around 1pm, 30-60 mins at Nursery, 60-90 mins at home.
She has a snack at 6:15 ish, before bed its nappy change, pj’s, brush teeth then story

Tortycat · 03/03/2018 20:32

My 3.5 year old sleeps 8- 8.30 til 7.30. Like a log. My 20m old sleeps 8-7.30 but still wakes twice which is killing me. And he only naps for 30-40 mins unless we're driving

Worieddd · 03/03/2018 20:32

2.8 year old asleep around 8 (start bath/book around 7:15 ish) he wakes st around 7-8am and has a nap for around 1.5hrs although the nap isn’t as regular anymore!
He can be a bit of a shit going to bed but we have started just switching the light off and ignoring him with one of us there

TheCaptainsCat · 03/03/2018 20:32

My almost three year old sleeps 7-7. Before we cut out her nap she was up until about 9pm, was a nightmare! She stopped napping about a year ago.

Abi1987 · 03/03/2018 20:38

So do you guys think maybe he is ready for not having a nap now or cut the nap time down? He has 1 hr 45 to 2 hours at around 1pm. I genuinely know that's not enough awake time at the end of the day but he won't settle down to nap any earlier.
You are all amazing mummies! So organised

Abi1987 · 03/03/2018 20:40

Just worried if I cut his nap completely he will be a nightmare through the day cos he does still seem to need it most days more than others.
His sleep is all over the place tho, he wakes up at 7.15 ish still tired cos he's not going to bed till late then not napping till 1. Those times are like clockwork it's just him going to bed...

Jemma2907 · 03/03/2018 20:44

Does he fight going down for his nap at all? My DS cut it down to every other day for about a month or so before dropping it completely (he used to sleep for 2.5-3 hours!)

noname687328 · 03/03/2018 20:44

My 2 year old has been going to bed at 5 for the last couple of months because we had to cut out his nap, with a nap he wasn't going to sleep until 9:30/10 and then being tired in the morning, he still needs the nap and can get really grumpy but I found it harder him being awake until that late. The other day he went to sleep at half 4!!!! And stayed asleep until 7am the next day xx

WowserBowser · 03/03/2018 20:45

My DS stopped his nap at about 2. Yes it is hard work and they get tired and grumpy but at least he will be ready for bed at 6.30-7pm! If you have 5-9pm where he is grumpy anyway, you may as well give it a go.

And I'm not organised at all Grin

TheBlindspot · 03/03/2018 20:48

@Abi1987

I'll start by saying I honestly believe that decent toddler sleep is as much about luck as it is routine. All kids have things that they are good and bad for - my DD is a great sleeper but is a naughty pest with food!

I've had the same routine since she was about a year old and I'm really consistent with it - I even stick to it as close as I can if we're away from home. I'm a SAHM so I've been able to accommodate it.

I never let her nap later than 3:30pm (she goes down about 1pm usually) and we bathe in the mornings - baths are playtime for DD and just wake her up!

4:45: Dinner, done by 5:30
5:45: Teeth brushed, a wash and pjs on. TV off by 6 and really noisy/flashy toys away
From 6: Quiet playtime - colouring, stickers, dolls, duplo that sort of thing
From 6:30ish, usually around 6:45: Into sleeping bag and stories on the sofa. Bed after stories. Straight upstairs, into cot with a kiss, cuddle and 'night night'.

She's usually asleep within ten/fifteen minutes. I rarely hear a peep out of her until morning.

We will be changing a few bits soon, once she's grown out of this sleeping bag we'll be getting a duvet and pillow, plus the sides are going to have to come off the cot as I'm pregnant and started to struggle to reach the bottom now so time will tell how those changes affect us!

willisurvive3under2 · 03/03/2018 20:49

Nearly 19 months old asleep by 8.30 here. Generally sleeps until 8 unless poorly/teething/other issues.

Maybe try and wake him from his nap after an hour? I think they need at least 5 hours awake time at that age? So perhaps awake 2.30-7.30, in bed by 8.30? You might need to experiment a bit!

RockinRobinTweets · 03/03/2018 20:50

Is he in a bed and messing around getting back up or is he just not settling in a cot? I think less than 2 is on the young side for dropping a nap and probably just another way of saying no Hmm —or was that just mine—

Abi1987 · 03/03/2018 21:08

He is in a proper bed now as he was climbing out his cot at 20 months old the little monkey ha. He gets up and just runs up and down his bed (overtired) and thinks it's funny to stand on his pillow and just talk and sing ha. He won't lay down. He does fight his nap yes but some days asks to go to bed but that's when he's really tired.

Chienrouge · 03/03/2018 21:13

Mine are 4 and 2 and both sleep 7-7. Both dropped their naps at 20 months.

inappropriateraspberry · 03/03/2018 21:14

My almost 3 year old goes to bed at 6:30/7pm and sleeps through till 7:30/8am! She only wakes in the night if unwell or falls out of bed! Doesn't nap in the day anymore though, and I do miss that!

OneDayIWillHaveAGreatUsername · 03/03/2018 21:21

We stopped our DD's nap just before she turned 3 as a) she was taking ages to fall asleep at nap time which meant she woke from her nap around 3pm and b) she would play in her bedroom until about 9pm.

As a result she now falls asleep almost instantly at 7pm and goes through 12 hours. Some days she asks for a lunchtime nap and we let her but it's only when she's really tired.

It definitely sounds like you either need to cut the daytime nap totally or reduce it to 30 mins/1 hour. And bring his bedtime earlier - start getting ready for bed at 6pm to aim to have him tucked up by 6.30pm.

Good luck!

Hoviscats · 03/03/2018 21:22

I would say just do a shorter nap. My 18 month old only has an hours nap most days (we wake him up) as otherwise he won't go to bed or is up half the night. he generally has an hour around 11.30-12.30 but is an early riser so sleeps 7-5.30 overnight on a good day! If he sleeps later than 2.30 bed time is significantly delayed....

happymummy12345 · 03/03/2018 21:26

My toddler is 2 and a half, he goes to bed at 7ish, and usually wakes up between 7-8. He usually has a sleep early afternoon, between 1-2 hours.

custardcream1988 · 03/03/2018 21:27

It sounds like a behavioural issue to be honest. What routine do you have before he goes to bed? Bath/book etc? If you put lights out and walked out of the room, what would his response be? What I'm trying to gage is are you hanging around, attempting to get him to lie down, or do you walk out anyway and her screams the place down?
