My little boy is nine days old. He sleeps pretty well during the day but at night just wants to be held and breastfed. He doesn't settle in his moses basket at night (but he will quite often do so during the day)

Anyone else up doing the same?! I'm not keen on the idea of co-sleeping but would be grateful for any advice. Baby sleeps in a gro-snug and we have a dream sheep but I'm guessing this frequent feeding and love of cuddles in the night is probably just par for the course at this early stage? 😊 I am napping during the day so I'm probably averaging about 6 hrs sleep in a 24 hr period.

These two links might be helpful for bed shaders.

He was on his side @Panda81. I've tried him on his back next to me and it doesn't work as he obviously doesn't feel cosied in enough. Also if he had been feeding on and off would you roll him onto his back in between every time?

I had him swaddled too which stopped his flailing and waking himself but apparently that's not good. I wouldn't want to put a blanket on him in case it covered his face though.

And it was a single bed with maybe 2 inches of a gap between it and the bed so it looks like I failed on all counts.

k567 · 06/09/2017 21:01

Any idea on the safest co-sleeping position?

Lallypopstick · 06/09/2017 21:22

k567 Have a look at the image bank on the second link I posted above.

Did anyone else notice a change in behaviour around a 'growth spurt' ?Dd's extra fussiness seems to be coinciding with her growing enormously in a short space of time! She is 4 weeks.

I hope everyone's night is good!

LadyNymeriaGhost · 07/09/2017 09:17

Very yep. We get 1 or 2 days of fussiness, followed by a lovely day off sleepiness. If I remember rightly, there is a growth spurt at around 4 weeks. If you Google it, there's a list of the usual spurts.
I thought the cold was getting better, but he couldn't breathe again last night, then DD (got to stop calling her The Toddler, she's at school now!) came in at 3am to inform us it was dark outside, and woke him up. Confused

verysleepymum · 07/09/2017 19:18

Oh how frustrating lady I hope he feels better soon!

Lallypopstick · 07/09/2017 22:17

I have one overtired baby on my hands (boob actually). Had a very long nap this afternoon, but only brief snoozes after feeding since about 5pm. Fingers crossed he'll sleep soon, we're in a bit of a cluster feed phase currently.

NinaMarieP · 08/09/2017 00:13

We had a fussy, clustering sort of afternoon but then he has slept really well between feeds this evening which makes a nice change! He has hardly slept during the day this week - he has been content to lie in his basket / sit in in his chair for reasonable periods though so it has been bearable.

NinaMarieP · 08/09/2017 00:13

Oh and he has gained 10 oz this week so all the feeding is paying off!

LadyNymeriaGhost · 08/09/2017 04:33

Wow, Nina, that's great!
It's cough-central in here tonight. They're all at it! DH sent me to bed at 7, because I fell asleep sitting up on the floor.

Jellybean2017 · 08/09/2017 04:45

We had a bit of an evening cluster last night. My husband topped him up with some expressed milk arond 9.15

OP posts:
Jellybean2017 · 08/09/2017 04:49

Oops posted too early! After the expressed milk he stayed in the sling with my husband until 11ish so I could sleep. We then fed again until midnight, slept until about 2.40 then next feed/nappy change and was sick down me! Took ages to resettle - until 3.30 I think. Now feeding again. He seems.to be in a bit of pain from wind and has been sick more last few days..

Hope everyone is sleeping! Nina that's great weight gain!

OP posts:
Lallypopstick · 08/09/2017 08:20

Lady falling asleep sitting up on the floor is quite the skill!

Good news on the weight gain Nina, makes all the feeding worth it when you know they're doing well. I cried when he regained his birth weight as feeding had been so painful at that time.

Jelly hope the windy and sick phase passes soon.

I hesitate to get ahead of myself, but we seem to have had a few good nights in a row. Both in bed by 10:30, a wake up at 2:10, quick feed, half 4 then a longer feed from both sides then I topped him up when he was stirring at 6:30 as I didn't want him to wake up properly just yet.

Partner is going to the cinema with friends tonight so I hope we don't have a fussy evening as I'll have no one to hand him too. Maybe we'll get a nap today as well, he's started doing better in his cot for naps too - as in not waking straight up when I put him in.

Jellybean2017 · 08/09/2017 17:20

Well the tongue tie procedure was traumatic for us both. Not seen an improvement to his latch yet but fingers crossed!
What do you all in terms of a bedtime routine for your baby! Ours is 5 weeks today and wondering if we should be having a pattern for the evening. My husband doesn't get home until 6.30pm so we don't have loads of time to do stuff before we are both shattered. Is it just a case of us all going to bed really early at same time as baby?! As he has to be in same room as us when sleeping, we tend to stay in lounge with TV on until we are ready to go up to bed, but not sure if this will confuse him more about day and night?! Any tips would be great 😊 not looking for a super strict routine just a step in the right direction I guess.

No real routine here at nearly 7 weeks, though I try and do things around the routine he's sort of in. His bedtime currently is between 10-11.30. So I put him in his sleeping bag (tried a swaddle thing but it didn't seem to make much difference to the flailing limbs waking him up) when he's still downstairs before this time and might do one feed. Then about 10pm, I'll go upstairs and do a feed in the same place I do his night feeds (spare bedroom / study). I'm thinking that these might serve as cues to bedtime for him - sleeping bag on to help him get all cosy, then a feed in a dark room with no TV / light. If he's fed and fallen asleep downstairs, he'll usually stir if we put him straight in the snuzpod and need a feed anyway. And then my partner and I go to bed though most nights he's in bed before me.

Now I'm wondering if taking him upstairs 15 minutes earlier might help cue sleep a bit sooner. Might try that tonight given I'm home alone anyway.

NinaMarieP · 08/09/2017 18:40

We have no real routine as he feeds at varying times. Often he'll sleep on my OH in the living room in the late evening while I sleep in the spare room, then he comes through around midnight/1am and I feed him and put him to bed in his basket.

Saying that, last night I fed him at 11 in the living room then went through to bed with him.

But whenever I put him down in the night it's swaddled and with the white noise machine on and in a dimly lit room.

Panda81 · 08/09/2017 20:00

So my DS has a posterior tongue tie!

I was surprised as so many people had already checked this butI thought they were getting TT specialist to rule it out too as weight gain has been slow, but turns out he does have TT after all.

As it's posterior they would need to refer us to another hospital which would take weeks so getting it done privately tomorrow.

I really hope this helps, it goes a long way to explaining some of the problems we've had. Cluster feeding for 10-12 hours every night really didn't feel normal but this might be why he was doing it - poor little boy having to work so hard every feed, and feed little and often.

Really hope this fixes it.

Jellybean2017 · 08/09/2017 20:09

Good luck Panda. We had our little boys done today. Are you taking someone along with you?

Panda81 · 08/09/2017 20:37

My dad is going to come with us. Is it hard to watch?

LadyNymeriaGhost · 09/09/2017 03:20

I hope things improve for you, Jelly and Panda.
I ventured out to the theatre earlier. It was lovely to have some normal grown up time, but I didn't get home until gone 11. DS has just woken himself with a massive coughing fit.
3 hours until DD wakes me up...

AmyJessicax26 · 09/09/2017 03:23

Usually they just grow out of it my little boy was the same although I didn't bf - now he sleeps at night like a trooper at 5months so bad so that if I forget my alarm he can sleep close to lunchtime ! Lazy boy x

Jellybean2017 · 09/09/2017 04:41

Panda - I took a friend as my husband was at work. She had to hold baby's head while the lady cut the tie and I sat with boob out ready to feed immediately. So I didn't watch but still made me a bit emotional to hear his cry :( it's good your dad will be there to support you. It only took a couple of seconds to cut my baby's.

We tried and failed with bedtime routine. He just would not settle in crib, I think he has bad trapped wind. So he has slept on me. And I must have nodded off which I shouldn't do. Woke to him trying to latch on.

Amy your baby sounds a dream!

Lallypopstick · 09/09/2017 07:27

Good luck today Panda - fingers crossed for a quick and trauma free procedure then a break from constant cluster feeding.

Lady glad you enjoyed your night out. Hope you're having a lazy morning and DD had a lie in!

Last night was a good one for us, unexpectedly so. He fell asleep on me at about 8pm after a feed and at about half 8, I decided to chance moving him. Then I went to bed too. He woke up just after midnight for a feed, then 2am, at which point I got a little worried that we'd be up every hour or two. But then he slept until 5 and after a feed, slept until about 7. So more wake ups than usual, but also more sleep for me.

Not expecting the same tonight but at least my partner is off work and I can have a nap today.

LadyNymeriaGhost · 10/09/2017 04:19

How's everyone's night going? I hope the tt snip went well, Panda.
DS has been coughing on and off since 12. Really hope this cold does one soon.
