My 18 month old son has never slept through the night. He goes to sleep on his own even says night night. But hes up around every three hours and always has done. Ive tried everything possible to get him to sleep thru. I even gave him phenegan as recommended by my doctor but that didnt work. Has anyone got any miracle advice. Ill do anything now, im so tired

Isnt it hard. Never know what to do for the best.
Nice trick Whiffy, id try anything, whatever works is ok with me. Im in the middle of a cunning plan at the moment with reducing his milk every three nights but if it doesnt work id try it. Phenergan didnt work for mine either when i tried it but i gave it him before he went to bed but that wasnt the problem it was that he kept waking up.
Im interested in osteo cranial therapy it has been suggested to me before. Is it expensive?
I have appointment at psycologist at 9.30 with my son. He slept til 3.20 last night, then up at 4.30 and 5.45. Had 3oz each time. Its meant to go down to 2.5oz tonight. It seems that the less im giving him the more he is waking up. That wasnt the plan. Tired today, a miserable mom day. God help the kids!

WOW Mellowma what a difference! Thats brill are you still ignoring him? Update from psycologist - he said to keep reducing by 0.5oz every 4 days and if he starts crying as the amount gets less to just ignore him. Then after 4 days of just 0.5oz to give him an empty bottle!!! I know, god knows what its gonna be like. Im dreading it. He said its a natural progression and i suppose it does make sense. The after 4 nights of an empty bottle to not go in at all and completely ignore him.OOOOOOooohhhhh im dreading it....

I think the night time drinking could be the key. Ds has always been a terrible sleeper. As you all know it causes no end of frustration within the relationship. One of our big issues was ds having milk when he woke up. I was convinced that it was a big part of the problem. Dh didn't agree and kept insisting that he must "need" it. Finally about 2 weeks ago, ds got a tummy bug and the nurse said no milk. It really wasn't that big of a deal to tell him no and now he's been sleeping like a dream!

Keep the faith, mm - it's the only way to stay sane!

Pepperminthippo - I let my 6 week old baby cry yes. I put him to bed on his own and he cried for a few minutes and he went to sleep. I did this for max of 3 to 4 days. My mum was with me the whole time as I couldn't do it on my own (dh couldn't do it with me either!)I suppose it isn't controlled crying as such, because ds fell asleep after few mins anyway and he I didn't have to leave him crying for long periods ie all night.

Day one - bath, bottle, bed at 9pm. Cried for about 10 mins, fell asleep. Woke at 2 am for a feed, then at 5am for feed

Day two - bath, bottle, bed at 8.30pm. Cried for about 10 mins, fell asleep. Woke at 2am for feed, woke at 5am for feed.

Day three - bath, bottle, bed at 8pm. Cried for 5 mins tops, fell asleep. Woke at 5am for feed.

Day four - bath, bottle, bed at 7.30pm. Didn't cry, fell asleep. Woke at 5am for feed.

He is now 19 months and his routine is similar to day 4 except he gets up around 7am.

shatteredmumsrus · 21/08/2006 14:04

MM - i think he will chuck the bottle right at the wall when he realises there is sweet fa in it! But im gonna give it a go anyway. dh listens to what the psycologist told me, he hasnt ever been there with me. Not sure he could repeat what i said to him tho, he kinda looks blank! Think his opinion is ill go along with whatever it is your doing. He still hufs and pufs at the noise in the night. I have given up thinking he will ever help me in the night, i either accept it or we divorce!!!Thats what i think anyway. Just keep bringing the money home and ill keep my mouth shut.
Things like medised make them drowsy and grumpy so id be cautious too MM.
Thanks Jabber, the more the merrier. Doesnt make us feel so weird....

Hello all, wish I could give you solid advice bout kids but winging it most of the time with my DD. DH takes the bins out but will not get up mid night for DD. Was very poorly one night recently and desperate for some painkillers, night nurse etc, hadn't slept all night, knew i;d be looking after DD in a couple of hours , feeling wretched..DH woke up and muttered something about taking the baby's calpol and went back to sleep. WTF for sure!! Although nothing has been said think the pact is his job earns us cash and my job is to raise DD...cool by me, I love being with DD but have had some seriously frazzled moments and gone loopy with rage and tiredness which gets the messag e across for ooooo a couple of days that i need a little help. was amused and shocked to see that I have had exactly the same conv as shattered with DH who advised he was awake as well...I responded in eaxactly the same way...get up then.. was gobsmacked that he might have actually believed I would be understanding!!!grrr. what is it in their brains that makes them think its the same??
Agree with MM, I keep happy during the night with the thought DD could be sleeping thru in a couple of weeks. However, I only have 1 child, not yet a toddler, so much easier for me. She slept from 7.45pm to 5.45am, took 30mins to settle to sleep, great but cried from 5.45am to 7 with PUPD. It's getting better.

Good luck all.

shatteredmumsrus · 21/08/2006 16:18

Hi Lychee, I should have called this thread - who hates men? Sorry blokes but you are useless, sometimes!!!Your little en sleeps well then. You'll have that sorted in no time. Can guaranteed. Cant wait til my youngest sleeps like my eldest, 8 til 7 guaranteed! Heaven!

eek, just sharing with the men thang, love and adore DH just can get on my nerves with stuff I can't even begin to fathom. I'm yet to leave DD with someone else overnight..will be overjoyed when I feel confident enough about her sleeping to able to do that. 8-7 sleep!!! Will be cracking open some celebratory bubbles if that kicks in...hopefully we've all cracked it by then and all have a glass..or 2/3/4 of champers...chin chin.

Oh and yes i BF in day (3 feeds per day)...not going back to work hence absolutely no need to stop BF. Have had comments off some mums relating DDs waking to BF with underlying suggestion to switch. Also has major sep anxiety! Am feeling hopeful though with PUPD.

Wehey back to school for you then MM, get your routine back. Another 2 weeks to go for us here in Birmingham.Your nights are getting better arent they. We will crack it together. Mine woke at 3.20, had 3oz and then4.45 , ignored him and he had 3oz at 6, nearly there. Its down to 2.5oz tonight. Ahhh!
Lychee I agree there is no need to stop BF whatsoever. I managed it til 9months but it was great. Are the night times getting easier for you too?

Morning Mommies, My little cherob was up at 2.30 and 5.30, I see a pattern forming here. He only had 2.5oz last night but he didnt go back to sleep as easy as he usually does. Its gonna get harder, ahhhh!

Oh dear, there is nothing you can do if they are under the weather is there? Isnt it annoying when you were just getting somewhere then you have to start from square 1! He might be better tonight, fingers crossed for you MM.
I had the worst night in ages with him wednesday night. Up at 1.30, 3.30, 4.30 and 6.30 approx. All I can think of is that he didnt eat much that day and refused his tea so he was probably hunger. Better last night - 3 and 6 and he is having 2.5oz and tonight. Then its 2oz from tomorrow and the next 3 nights. OOOOOhhhhhhh!!!! He is finding it harder to go back to sleep now but I am managing not to go into him and just leave him to whinge for a bit.Im getting a bit nervous about these smaller amounts and as for giving him an empty bottle well..... Im not so sure about that method, dont know whether to just giv him nothing after 0.5oz and let him cry. Not sure what an ampty bottle will do - probably give him cronic wind!!!

Hows Lychee???

Instead of an empty bottle try cooled boiled water. He might not think it worth his while to wake up for water.
