High-Need Baby Support Thread III

TitaniaP · 01/04/2012 06:32

Well as I'm awake I thought I'd start thread 3!

The high-need baby thread has been moved from breast & bottle feeding to sleep. In the early days of the thread I think feeding was a significant issue for many of the posters. I think those that post regularly on the thread would now agree that's it's mainly sleep that's the issue.

So if your baby fits the following criteria come and join us for wine, chocolate, coffee and matchsticks as we delight in our active, inquisitive, curious and restless babies or toddlers!

  1. Feeds frequently daytime
  2. Feeds frequently nighttime
  3. Needs to be constantly held
  4. Wont sleep alone
  5. Hates the car seat/pram
  6. Short naps

Stupid iPad! I was going to say that sounds like fun puddle Grin

tickleme63 · 10/04/2012 09:01

Oh Spanner :( Hope you all feel better soon.

DS's nursery settling in begins today...Worried for a lot of reasons, mainly that he'll catch something similar... Least we get to stay with him for this session.

Work this afternoon, bleh.

DS's full tum did nothing to curb his wakings, which I'm sure are just habit now. I actually did try (for maybe 2 minutes, which felt like eternity) to soothe him back to sleep without a feed but he got so upset. DH took a turn but in the end we fed him. I don't care if it is habit, he obviously needs something during the night and I cannot let him cry like that. As he did with his longer naps, and his self settling, he'll sleep through when he's ready.

One lovely thing today was getting DS down for his morning nap within minutes, awake... Popped him down, after saying our sleepy phrase a few times and he zonked. Celebrate every victory, no matter how small :)

Aw, bless BabySpanner - I hope the face strokes make you feel better.

Jan - Sorry you had a rough night. Hope you have a chance for a rest today. That mind racing thing is annoying isn't it?

I'm jealous Puddle that sounds lovely - is it nicer weather now too? It's glorious here (just when everyone has to go back to work!)

Good luck with settling in tickle - I've just dropped DS off for his first full day at nursery and spent a long time making his key worker promise to call me if there are any problems at all. Bless her. She's lovely and DS adores her (lots of leg kicking when he saw her this morning Smile) but she clearly thinks I'm a bit mental!

Not quite sure what to do with myself now. This is my first 'day off' for almost eight months. Bed? Big cleaning session? For now I'm just going to peruse more wedding dress websites and watch my guilty pleasure - America's Next Top Model

ATruthUniversallyAcknowledged · 10/04/2012 09:09

(Hadn't even thought about the risks of catching stuff at nursery. Thanks ladies! Another thing to worry about!)

TitaniaP · 10/04/2012 09:11

Truth - a whole day off. Am Envy!

ATruthUniversallyAcknowledged · 10/04/2012 09:22

Not a day off, four days off Grin Sad Hmm What the hell am I going to do?!

This is the most time off I've had for eight months, or will have for, say, eighteen years (DS will normally be with me during school hols, but this week he's in for settling in so that I don't panic next week!) so why do I keep checking my phone, glancing at the baby monitor and kind of pacing the room?

TitaniaP · 10/04/2012 09:27

Truth. Enjoy it. You deserve it. He'll be fine.

OP posts:
LittleWaveyLines · 10/04/2012 09:34

Truth - agreed, enjoy it! :) We've booked a settling in week for DD as well, but I've cancelled her nursery place as we would have to pay for school holidays, and found a fan childminder - who is also willing to put her in a sling! A buckle mei tai, but still a sling :) :)

Well my tonsillitis is now on both tonsils, and I feel crap... :(

ATruthUniversallyAcknowledged · 10/04/2012 10:01

It took a long time for us to find a nursery that wouldn't charge for school holidays LWL, but now that we have, I'm thinking... maybe we shouldn't have Grin

I hope your throat gets better soon. Seriously, try salt water!

LittleWaveyLines · 10/04/2012 11:36

I'll try the salt water now!

It'll be fine with the nursery - you wouldn't have picked one that wasnt suitable for your child...

jan2011 · 10/04/2012 13:07

hey..
poor u LWL... hope the salt water works!

yes truth, enjoy your time! think about your wedding, and use the time to PAMPER! BATHS relax with nice oils, hair masks etc...go and book yourself into a massage if you can spare the cash, don't spend your time cleaning! :)

tickleme i hope the nursery goes ok...and your work too. im doing the same thing at night re the feeding back to sleep...given up trying to get through without feeding to sleep, it seems a much easier solution and there must be a reason why she needs it for now and its obviously working even if its tedious, hopefully they will grow out of it soon.

i met a new mum this morning with toddlers. she was lovely and we got on really well, her kids are so cute and dd was very good and guess what THANKYOU Queenkong for the suggestion of the carrot sticks, because i went to boots, picked them up and she ate them! i was flabbergasted. so i went to buy a few more packs and hopefully this will be the start of it.

hopefully i will get a chance to relax a bit later on if dh takes dd for awhile.

ATruthUniversallyAcknowledged · 10/04/2012 19:44

Wow. DS has been AMAZING at nursery. He was there for 8 hours, drank from a bottle, ate solids, napped twice, didn't cry at all... What a star! DP was also amazing - surprised me with our first trip to the cinema for nine months & some posh choccies to eat there Grin

I meant I may come to regret the term time contract LWL Blush I could get used to time to myself!

Good news on the Carrot Stix Jan. DS progressed from those to cucumber sticks and whole strawberries (still the only three things he'll consistently eat) & now tries anything ('tries' though lots still gets discarded!)

LittleWaveyLines · 10/04/2012 20:02

Oops sorry I misunderstood Truth! But how fantastic! Whoop! :)

Well DD is asleep for the first time ever in her cot in her own room/... and like a numpty I'm sat beside her because I don't want to leave her on her own...

How many months have I complained to you quiche about being trapped upstairs in the evenings?

ATruthUniversallyAcknowledged · 10/04/2012 20:11

Awwww... bless LittlestWavey!

But up you get LWL, pop downstairs and get a glass of Wine

LittleWaveyLines · 10/04/2012 20:11

Yes boss! Grin

TitaniaP · 10/04/2012 20:22

I was like that LWL, when DS first started sleeping in his cot.

Get you truth and your fancy chocolates and cinema going! (glad to hear baby truth had a good day at nursery though).

OP posts:
LittleWaveyLines · 10/04/2012 20:22

Gah! She bloody heard me leaving the room and woke up! I swear she's got super powers!

ATruthUniversallyAcknowledged · 10/04/2012 20:56

Ooops, that was me practising my teacher voice LWL. Didn't mean to sound so bossy.

Grin Titania. Very happy.

LittleWaveyLines · 10/04/2012 21:06

I think I've lost my teacher voice :( I'll be all pathetic and will be ignored by year 7s by the time I go back in May!

ATruthUniversallyAcknowledged · 10/04/2012 21:19

Nevermind teacher voice, I've lost my ability to complete sentences. DP is forever falling about laughing as I attempt to explain about the thingy that did errrrrrrrm with the whatsit Hmm Plus, I burst into tears at the mere hint of confrontation. Bugger. Luckily I have a year 12 class to ease me back in on Monday morning, then a 'challenging' group of year 10s to practise my voice on!

LittleWaveyLines · 10/04/2012 21:25

Aawwww I missed my year 12s! I had such a lovely class.....

Good luck for the year 10s! :)

jan2011 · 11/04/2012 05:57

morning all :) dd slept till 4.30 which is very good, i fed her and then put her back down to sleep - she woke in the process and self settled - :) now i can't go back to sleep so im just getting up, nothing worse than lying in bed bored.

so glad LWL dd sleeping in cot..how did the rest of the night go?

attruth great about the nursery - im sure you are so relieved now and brill u got out to the cinema yay!

don't worry about the teacher voices its the teacher shoes that count (click, click ,click!)

SpannerPants · 11/04/2012 08:07

Well done babyjan!

I'm v jealous of the cinema trip truth, I've not been for about a year and really fancy a Ben and Jerry's core sundae

I'm feeling a bit better today but DP now has the lurgy so I've tucked him up in bed with some dioralyte and I'm looking after DS. I hope it passes quickly for him, I felt awful yesterday! I was so weak I could barely carry DS so we spent most of the day laying on the sofa which he found v boring :(

ATruthUniversallyAcknowledged · 11/04/2012 08:34

Teacher shoes! Jan you are so right. How could I have forgotten?

For today's trick... Haircut & colour for the first time in a year. Whooooop!

LittleWaveyLines · 11/04/2012 09:17

Jan glad you had a good night :)

Well the rest of our night was crap - brought her back in the main bed after she woke, got her off to sleep and managed to get downstairs for about 30mins before she woke again - and I swear she woke at least hourly from then on. Most of the time I had no idea what the problem was - she wouldn't feed, and she woke just as many times with the covers on as with the covers off....

Poor SpannerFamily - I;ve heard it's a rotten bug - it's doing the rounds here so I'm sort of glad we are in quarantine with chicken pox!

Truth enjoy the haircut!

... I still have huge spotty tonsils :(
