High-Need Baby Support Thread III

Well as I'm awake I thought I'd start thread 3!

The high-need baby thread has been moved from breast & bottle feeding to sleep. In the early days of the thread I think feeding was a significant issue for many of the posters. I think those that post regularly on the thread would now agree that's it's mainly sleep that's the issue.

So if your baby fits the following criteria come and join us for wine, chocolate, coffee and matchsticks as we delight in our active, inquisitive, curious and restless babies or toddlers!

  1. Feeds frequently daytime
  2. Feeds frequently nighttime
  3. Needs to be constantly held
  4. Wont sleep alone
  5. Hates the car seat/pram
  6. Short naps

Hey Puddle, glad you had a good journey, and well done BabyPuddle for going to sleep so well!

DD had a rough night despite calamine, porridge bath and calpol. Kept waking up crying and squirming... I then woke DP at 6.30 to hold her down so I could repaint her in calamine :( If she's not held down she just scratches at it, gets it all over her hands then eats it... but poor baby being pinned down and not able to explain why :(

Anyway, he's got her now for a bit while I get up - so I best had get up!

ATruthUniversallyAcknowledged · 08/04/2012 08:59

Oh poor BabyWavey. And poor Wavey family. That sounds no fun at all. Hope you get some rest today.

ATruthUniversallyAcknowledged · 08/04/2012 10:14

Alright stalkers quiche, want to hear my latest wedding dress dilemma? Get yourselves over to S&B and help me out.

SpannerPants · 08/04/2012 10:20

Poor baby LWL! One of my friends has just had the pox in her house (4 kids, only 3 got it but the youngest was only 6 months!)'and she said she got something called virasoothe from boots which helped, I think it's a cream.

Hope you have a fab break puddle, and that the good behaviour and sleep continue!

We've had a few good nights where DS has only been feeding 2-3 times, last night he went for almost 8hrs between feeds which hasn't happened since he was about 12 weeks old! He did need cuddling and rocking to sleep twice in that time but overall it's an improvement. I think he might have a bit of a bug from nursery as he projectile vomited his breakfast over me yesterday and is off solids again, but he seems happy enough otherwise.

It's my birthday today and DP forgot to get me a card so he made one with DS this morning. I don't think he realised finger painting could be so stressful! He gave me my present (iPad) 3 weeks ago because he was so excited when it arrived. I've got my parents coming over for Sunday lunch (roast pork followed by bun and butter pudding) which should be nice because they can play with DS while I cook. I've just made my birthday cake too - nigellas marzipan cake, it's delicious Grin

Happy birthday Spanner and hope BabyWavey feels better soon.

lol nice one spanner making your own cake ha thats one way to make sure you get what you want! happy birthday :) :) have a lovely day

sorry LWL about the pox... can't imagine how difficult it would be dealing with that and no sleep etc...hoping you have some help over easter

happy easter everyone. i hear dd start to cry while dh tries to spoon feed her- its been a stressful business! i went back to bed. dd was up from 1 - 5 last night so completely shattered. she wouldnt feed to sleep as her teeth were sore, tried calpol etc no joy. in the end i got 12 hours of someone vacuming on utube (lol crazy i know) and played it beside her and she finally conked out.

hope everyone has a nice time today. dh is trying to tell me to get ready to go out.. :)

LittleWaveyLines · 08/04/2012 14:50

Happy Birthday Spanner!

Actually BabyWavey seems to be better today, thanks people! :) She's happily trilling beside me right now - when she should be napping, but that's the HN story isn't it? Grin

tickleme63 · 08/04/2012 15:23

Happy birthday Spanner!

Yay, LWL, glad she's feeling better!

For my sins, I've just gone and joined our local gym. Fed up of feeling low on energy (suppose sleep would help, but exercise might be a more feasible alternative Grin). It has a crèche on site as well so (once we've got his nursery settling in sorted and done - dont want to confuse the poor lad) on saturdays DH and I will take DS to the crèche after his morning nap, go work out/swim/whatever and then grab DS and either take him swimming or head back home :) Very excited about getting back into working out with hubs, we've not really done anything together without bubs since he was born!

Speaking of nursery settling in... Ours starts on Tuesday. Yikes! :(

QueenKong · 08/04/2012 17:01

Jan - if you have an iPhone there is a very handy white noise app called WhiteNoise. It has a variety of tunes such as hair dryer, air conditioning unit and vacuum so you can vary the monotony!

jan2011 · 08/04/2012 17:34

LWL glad to hear it!
Tickleme that sounds brill and will make you feel so much better after a bit of exercise! i keep trying to get into the dvds at home but never seem to manage it. i too have a gym membership and in the earlier days when dd woke up for her feed at 5.30 i fed her then legged it to gym to be back in time for next feed and wake up. no chance getting away with that now! so i haven't been in ages but my spare tyre is increasing. Itl be nice for u two to spend the time together too :)
Queen i have a blackberry, i will borrow dhs iphone and look them up, more variety would be good for my nerves!

LittleWaveyLines · 08/04/2012 18:54

Oh My Goodness!

She's walking! Mostly holding on to her brick trolley, but still¬ Shock She's only just 9 months.....

QueenKong · 08/04/2012 19:14

Yaay! Go BabyWavey! And with the pox as well! Just shows, you can't keep a HN baby down. Smile

ATruthUniversallyAcknowledged · 08/04/2012 19:32

Happy Birthday Spanner. Hope you had a lovely day Smile

Good news on the gym tickle - I've been leaving DS at the gym creche while I do a yoga class each week since January and it has had such a good effect on my mood. It was the first time I left DS with anyone other than DP so reassured me it was do-able, plus, it was just lovely to have 45 minutes to myself. I wish our gym had a weekend creche so DS could go together although he'd probably put me to shame! I hope nursery goes well too. DS has amazed me with how well he's settled in so I hope you have just as much success. We're moving on to full days this week (half days last week) so I'm a little scared!

Wowza BabyLWL You go girl!!!

I'm feeling sorry for myself tonight. I've had a cold for weeks and just can't shake it. I feel like shit and it's driving me bonkers. I think it's going to be another few mins of MN, then bath and bed for me.

Mampig · 08/04/2012 19:50

Happy birthday Spanner!!

BabyWavey!!! Walking- fantastic!!! No wonder she's been unsettled with so much going on!!!
Ds has had a rough day on the nap front- not looking forward to tonight- wonder if there's more to come with him too?? A tooth (at 9mo!) would be a good start!!!
It's mad, he's almost walking too, can just imagine a gummy walker in the house!!!

tickleme63 · 08/04/2012 20:06

BabyWavey Well done little lady! :)

DS has been rolling about so much today. It's probably the most comfortable and relaxed I've ever seen him on the floor :) Such a long way from the baby that would wail if left on the floor for more than a minute.

tickleme63 · 08/04/2012 20:08

Aww Truth, feel better soon chick

jan2011 · 09/04/2012 07:42

morning everyone. ive had a better night :)

tickle thats lovely you can relax a bit more too then watching him :) :)

truth sorry you have the cold its miserable isn't it i hope you feel better soon get lots of nice hot drinks into you hope you enjoyed your bath

LWL thats so exciting shes nearly walking...the HN babies here seem to be making lots of progress amid all the stress they are putting us mummies through!

joyfulpuddle if you get a chance to get here :) i hope youre having a brilliant time away with your family and getting some chance to sneak off and have some time with your dh as well

dh is off 3 days. he has some college work to do though and i have crazy (yes very crazy but nice in small doses) family coming to town on wednesday, staying for a month (not with me) so im hoping that will help lift my mood a bit. today i plan on having a bath and doing the new clarins tan ive had for ages but havn't had time/motivation to do.

i gave dd a day off spoon feeding yesterday...it was getting too stressful. today im going to try again and maybe some toast. shes nearly 7 months! wish me luck

TitaniaP · 09/04/2012 08:35

Morning all. Weird night here. DS managed from 8.30 - 1am in his cot with no wakings but then I brought him in with me and he was really unsettled. He has only just woken for the day though, so can't complain too much.

Sorry to hear weaning is so stressful Jan. we had the same with DS he wasn't interested in being spoon-fed at all. Spat it out, or kept his lips closed or just grabbed the spoon and threw it on the floor. I gave up spoon feeding in the end and let him feed himself. Have you

OP posts:
TitaniaP · 09/04/2012 08:37

Argh sorry.

Have you looked at baby-led weaning? You let the baby feed themselves. There's a couple of threads about it in the weaning section and there's a whole forum dedicated to it too. Does your DD pick up food and put it to her mouth?

OP posts:
ATruthUniversallyAcknowledged · 09/04/2012 08:39

I didn't realise you were struggling with spoon feeding too Jan. DS is almost 8 months and just will not take anything from a spoon. Finger food is going better but nothing approaching meals. It's so depressing when I go round to friends houses with much younger babies & they're wolfing down purées Sad [frustrated] We've given up completely. DS is happy. His skin is clear, his eyes are bright, he's obviously getting enough nutrition from somewhere...

Ah, BabyTitania too? Struggling to wean looks like another symptom to add to the HN baby list!

ATruthUniversallyAcknowledged · 09/04/2012 08:49

I'm feeling a bit better today, but it tends to get worse in the evening. By 7pm I want to stick a pin in my head to release all the tension. A super hot bath & good book seems more effective though!

Btw, when I said we'd 'given up' on weaning in that earlier post, I meant on spoon feeding. We're still giving DS finger foods three times a day but most of it ends up on the floor Bizarrely we've also realised he feeds better when we're in cafes. I don't know if it's the distraction of other people, the fact he can tell its an eating environment or if we're just more relaxed, but he definitely takes more in (tis costing me a fortune in coffee & cake for me but i just take a little lunchbox in for him)

TitaniaP · 09/04/2012 10:06

Truth - DS also eats loads more when we're out or if we have people over for lunch. We do seem to have turned a corner with weaning though, just before he got ill his appetite had picked up. Well I'm not sure if he's making up for the few lost days of being ill but he's eaten loads the last couple of days. Half a large banana with blueberries and grapes and porridge for breakfast (I do loaded spoons and he feeds himself). Butternut squash soup with muffin (dip bits of muffin into soup and give to baby), rice cake cream cheese, breadstick and hummus for lunch and more of the same for dinner plus a yoghurt and more fruit! He is 10 months next week though, so it's taken 4 months to get here! I go with the theory that they know what they need. They won't starve themselves and they'll eat when they need to!

LittleWaveyLines · 09/04/2012 10:40

Hi Puddle - hope your DS gets better soon. DD is much better now thanks - just scabby!

DD refuses being spoon fed as well, but we BLW from the start so not sure if she would have accepted being spoon fed if we'd done it earlier. She's starting to eat quite a lot for breakfast and lunch, but she's often too tired for dinner, unless I feed her at about 4pm! I also load spoons.

Well I'm ill now :( have one huge spotty sore tonsil, and the other is not looking much better! I think it's because I've actually rested this weekend - with DD being ill she has actually napped, so I've been able to as well, and also DP has helped out a lot.
