Low profile ski helmet

Do such helmets exist?!
I want one but don't want my head to resemble a mushroom.

They are designed in a very particular way to protect your skill on impact, I mean you could wear a bike helmet? They are more streamlined, but I don't fancy your chances in any crash.

I would say everyone will be wearing a standard helmet, you can buy an Oakley or branded one and you can grab some googles and they can sit on the front to minimise the less "cool" look.

creamsnugjumper · 18/01/2025 18:04

Sorry meant to say, you don't have to wear one, they aren't a legal requirement.

minipie · 18/01/2025 18:13

Everyone wears the round ones. If you’re worried about looking silly, you will stand out more by wearing something else than by wearing the usual style (and as pp said they are that shape for a reason). They look fine with goggles IMO

LIZS · 18/01/2025 18:15

Snowboard ones have a slightly different shape but frankly noone cares what they look like, better to feel safe.

abricotine · 18/01/2025 21:58

Can you already ski to a high standard? Otherwise your head looking like a mushroom is the least of your worries 😂

But do lower profile ski helmets exist or are they all the same profile?

Huskytrot · 18/01/2025 22:07

What does lower profile even mean?

It shouldn't stick too high off your head. It should fit snugly. Go to a proper ski shop and try a few on.

They are much better these days. Smiths MIPPS helmet is pretty good shape, but they are all an inch thick so make your head look bigger…

abricotine · 18/01/2025 23:12

I have a Sweet protection switcher. Different brands suit slightly different head shapes - eg Giro quite good for rounder heads. But I’ve never heard of any described as low profile. Some racing helmets are very close fitting but they probably have more protection around the lower face than you might want.

KittenPause · 18/01/2025 23:27

Unless you're skiing off piste near rocks you don't really need one but I get that they're a precaution

My friend got a serious concussion by landing on her head when someone ran across her skis. Her helmet broke! No rocks, just the floor. Your observation is ludicrous

SkiingIsHeaven · 19/01/2025 00:08

I believe that helmets should be compulsory. I would never tell anyone not to bother.

Sorry, can't help you on the low profile question.

I hate when people say this.

Natasha Richardson for example beginner lesson fell over and hit her head, then died two days later because of the head injury sustained in the fall, which presumably seemed pretty minor at the time as she declined medical attention. So an accidental fall on an easy run.

and then obviously people being idiots or just losing control or whatever could 'accidentally’ take you out.

i would always wear a helmet when skiing.

Anyone can be crashed into.

No problem.

Agree re helmet. I'm an advanced skier and the amount of times I've been taken out be other skiers is crazy. Helmets is a must.

Mission accomplished

Now you all know how vital a helmet is no matter how big your head looks in it

Forget vanity and how you look in a ski helmet

Just wear the best helmet you can afford

I'm mean honestly 'I don't want to look like a mushroom' you're not 5 you're an adult on ski slope which can be deadly if you're unlucky

Yeah, thanks for the lecture.

It was a light-hearted thread NOT arguing the case for going without.

My large mushroom Salomon helmet makes me feel top-heavy and clumsy. I fancied something sleeker and given that I live way out in the sticks, I wanted to research them a little before spending.

Thanks for the help.

I have a POC. My head is the size of a small planet so I wanted one as neat as possible and this was the neatest one I could find (whilst also being safe and well made)

Now then - this is looking good - thanks!

I'm sure you do t have the head of a small planet but I understand the sentiment 🤣

Nice!

Snoski · 06/02/2025 12:54

I’ve bought a new Salomon helmet which appears bigger/higher profile than my last one - but it’s extremely comfortable by comparison and fits my head really well. With goggles either on, or sitting up on the edge when not in use it doesn’t look as bad.

My last one is a bolle and it seems to be less bulbous but it must be at least 12 years old - I don’t know if their newer styles are similarly shaped.

StamppotAndGravy · 06/02/2025 13:14

I have a K2 helmet that looks similar to the POC, but they come in much better colours! Decathlon ones seem bulkier, so maybe it's just a style/ design/ price thing. Black shiny ones make me feel like a bowls ball. If you don't mind paying a premium, why not get one in resort? You'll get a much better choice

sunbum · 06/02/2025 20:34

White or grey ones make your head look smaller I think. Cheaoer ones are bulkier.
