I want one but don't want my head to resemble a mushroom.

I find that helmets with a slight peak at the front make your head look a bit smaller than ones that don't.

Unless you're skiing off piste near rocks you don't really need one but I get that they're a precaution

Friend was standing still at the edge of a slope when someone skied into her. Her head hit a rock with enough force to split the helmet and she was off work for over a month. The helmet saved her.

Mine has that peak/lip thing.
I guess it was all fine in the end. Although I may very well be saving the pennies for one of those beanie helmets linked up thread.
