Is anyone feeling nervous about their 21/22 ski trip?

I realise that I'm probably being silly. I fully recognise that covid has made me a bit irrationally anxious about crowds, busy places, etc. So on that note... We have a large and normally busy resort in France booked (booked pre covid and shifted from last year to this). We're going to a catered chalet with DH's family which includes his child free siblings who will want to go out partying.
I'm a bit worried about ski resorts being covid hotbeds this winter (remembering Whistler last year) and what will happen if we end up with it - we won't be able to travel home presumably so where will we stay? Not to mention the possibility of actually getting ill, though DH and I are both vaccinated so I know that's unlikely.
Anyway, just wondering if anyone else is having similar thoughts or if I'm being really foolish.

Not looking good for Austria right now…

reallyagain · 18/11/2021 15:34

Hopefully their new measures will increase their vaccination rate, it's quite low

reallyagain · 18/11/2021 15:35

If anything this should improve the situation for the ski season

The hope is that there is a higher take-up of vaccinations and a resulting fall in the infection rates - and in particular, a fall in the number of people in hospital and in ITU with Covid - and that this will enable a regular ski season to take place from Christmas onwards.

The main issue in Upper Austria and Salzburgland is the high percentage of unvaccinated, particularly those who have declared that under no circumstances will they be vaccinated and who cannot be convinced otherwise. The strain on the hospital services is largely being caused by this group - some reports state that unvaccinated are 10 times more likely to end up in hospital with Covid - but unless and until this changes, there is a real possibility that Austria in general and particularly Salzburgerland and Tirol won't be able to open for the ski season.

I am very worried - supposed to be travelling to the Tirol on 17 December!!! So far it isn't in lockdown, but the likelihood is it will follow. It's like last year all over again: lockdown until X date, but X date keeps on getting extended!!

reallyagain · 18/11/2021 19:27

Blacklamb at present assume you could go as it's lockdown on unvaccinated (unless they tighten that further), or do you have 12-15 children?

BlackLambAndGreyFalcon · 18/11/2021 19:57

Yes I know at present I could go, but these things are changing by the day (or so it seems!) Fortunately my DD is under 12.

BlackLambAndGreyFalcon · 18/11/2021 19:59

The lockdown in Salzburg and upper Austria is for all people vaxxed and un-vaxxed. It's a proper lockdown with schools closed. There is talk of it being extended to the whole country (we've been here before and that's generally the way it goes).

artquejtion · 19/11/2021 10:02

The agent in the ski resort that we go to, told me that in the past week, 30% of their bookings for Xmas and NYE have been cancelled.

I guess people are beginning to get nervous about travelling.

Havanananana · 19/11/2021 10:58

Austria update - 19th November.

The entire country will go into full lockdown from Monday 22nd November for 20 days - with a review after 10 days. This means that everybody, vaxxed and un-vaxxed, is restricted to only leaving their homes only for specific purposes. Only essential shops and services are open - grocery shops, pharmacies, doctors' surgeries etc. Hotels, holiday accommodation, restaurants and cafes etc. are closed, as are Christmas Markets.

The intention is two-fold: 1) to encourage more people to be vaccinated - lockdown for un-vaxxed will continue after the 20 days - and 2) to bring down the current rates of infection and hospitalisations.

Obviously there is the hope that this will be sufficient to allow the winter tourist season to go ahead, even if in a restricted way, but this is very much the same situation as this time last year - albeit that there are now vaccines available.

Tillymintsmama · 22/11/2021 22:24

I'm supposed to be going to Austria skiing with my 13 year old unvaxxed daughter on 3rd Jan. I think that's looking unlikely as Austria hasn't said what is happening with 12 - 15 year olds yet... :(

silverbubbles · 23/11/2021 22:01

in the same boat as @Tillymintsmama

one child will have had 2nd jab by time we leave but other child is 14 and so only had one jab.
Finding it very hard to understand what is happening for this age group....

jb23newmum · 24/11/2021 22:01

Was extremely excited when we changed our Austria trip to Italy (despite our 12 year old having to test every 48 hrs) but after reading the news and the introduction of the super green pass now feel deflated . Our 12 year old recovered from Covid in January and was vaccinated in September and it still appears not to be enough ! Looks like France is following suit - so looking likely I will be cooking Xmas dinner this year 😢

NCTDN · 24/11/2021 22:43

I hadn't read that about the super green pass. Was hoping that France would be a good bet for Feb...

massistar · 25/11/2021 07:54

Just read that they've approved the Super Green Pass. 😢 We're trying to get my daughter one through the Italian health service using her proof of single vaccine and that she's tested positive in last week. But think it's only for Italian citizens.

jb23newmum · 25/11/2021 08:26

I think you should get one with the covid recovery - I read on crystals website in their covid hub on how to get one being a UK citizen - might be wrong - good luck !

OhCobblers · 25/11/2021 09:04

Presumably as long as your teens still test , and get a negative, every 72 hours whilst on holiday, you can still enter restaurants, bars, etc?

Notstrongandstable · 25/11/2021 09:27

Sorry to be a pain but could someone tell me how the super green pass affects kids (14, single dose & 10 unvaccinated)? And which countries it applies to
Thanks in advance

massistar · 25/11/2021 10:18

Not in Italy now @OhCobblers . The Super Green Pass is only for vaccinated/recovered. You can't get it with tests any more. And without the Super Green Pass you can't go anywhere indoors.

massistar · 25/11/2021 10:19

Super Green Pass only applies to Italy. I don't know what the restrictions are for other countries.

Bratnews · 25/11/2021 11:16

Does anyone have an idea of what France is looking like - we are supposed to be going just after Christmas but the teens have only have one vaccination - hopefully it will be no worse that testing in resort but worry that it will change.

NinnyNewName · 25/11/2021 11:39

We are going to France for Christmas. I just booked our youngest DS (16) his second jab. Fingers crossed.

Bratnews · 25/11/2021 11:49

Unfortunately our can't get second jabs ! Accommodation needs to be paid soon so have to make a decision.

abricotine · 25/11/2021 12:19

Seems a determination for France to carry on as normal but without two jabs (or ability to prove it) or your second jab is 7 months+ old then you will need to pay for a daily test to eat out, use pools, check into many hotels, and most likely, use a ski lift.

User2638483 · 25/11/2021 12:23

What do we think the chances are of a school ski trip going ahead to Austria at Easter?
Unless something changes the age group going will only have had a single vaccination
