Is anyone feeling nervous about their 21/22 ski trip?

I realise that I'm probably being silly. I fully recognise that covid has made me a bit irrationally anxious about crowds, busy places, etc. So on that note... We have a large and normally busy resort in France booked (booked pre covid and shifted from last year to this). We're going to a catered chalet with DH's family which includes his child free siblings who will want to go out partying.
I'm a bit worried about ski resorts being covid hotbeds this winter (remembering Whistler last year) and what will happen if we end up with it - we won't be able to travel home presumably so where will we stay? Not to mention the possibility of actually getting ill, though DH and I are both vaccinated so I know that's unlikely.
Anyway, just wondering if anyone else is having similar thoughts or if I'm being really foolish.

Currently packing. I've heard rumours of people who do ski holidays with hand luggage....

IsThisNameTaken · 17/12/2021 14:26

@Aroundtheworldin80moves have you been told the details of your new flights yet? I've heard nothing at all .....

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 17/12/2021 14:30

It’s such a shame, they have great snow this year.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 17/12/2021 14:31

Not yet. DH had two emails last night saying we will be told today.

IsThisNameTaken · 17/12/2021 14:46

@Aroundtheworldin80moves just got an email now - but it ignores the fact that single vaccinated teens can't get into Spain!!

Austria - Holiday Ninja Pass for foreign (non-Austrian) teenagers announced

The workaround for foreign teenagers who might not be fully vaccinated (e.g. British teenagers aged 12-15) has been announced, which allows teenagers to ski in Austria without being fully vaccinated.

Totally gutted we had to cancel our Xmas holiday to Austria - after today’s announcement we could have gone after all !

ILOVEALLCAKES · 17/12/2021 19:39

@mnp321 - we are one of the lucky few! We had flights to Geneva but decided last week to drive. Chalet company contacted us to say chalet empty the week preceding ours -did we want it, so grabbed 3 extra nights. Arrived in France on Wednesday as the news broke re: the travel ban. We’ve skied today in glorious conditions. Feel so incredibly fortunate that luck was on our side.
I’m really sorry for those of you who’ve had no choice but to cancel again this year.

Hophop26 · 17/12/2021 20:58

I’m packing too, or attempting to! Its hideous I’m so frazzled by it all and the last minute switch from France to Italy and needing to be packed and at airport days earlier better be worth it!!!

mnp321 · 17/12/2021 21:31

Iloveallcakes that's fantastic! Glad someone managed to run the gauntlet (kind of a Covid total wipeout course) and is enjoying their ski trip. (My Swiss hotel well-meaningly emailed me to say how great the snow was when I cancelled which didn't really soften the blow...!).

TheElderleyBrothers · 17/12/2021 21:51

We are en Francais, we had decided when we booked to cross today to avoid eurotunnel Saturday hell. We're making our way to the alps over the next two days. Eurotunnel wasn't packed but the usual peak time delays. The skis carriers on the roofs were conspicuously absent though Sad

So Austria have just announced anyone who is only double jabbed (acceptable if you have a booster more than 14 days ago) now need a pcr test 72 hours before we are due to fly. These might just break me !! My DD22 and DS17 both need a test and it's proving mission impossible to find . I could cry

BlackLambAndGreyFalcon · 17/12/2021 23:10

Just to clarify that the Austrian entry requirement change only comes into effect on Monday. Anyone travelling this weekend is not affected by it.

NotDonna · 17/12/2021 23:24

Yeah 🎉⛷ @TheElderleyBrothers
and others who have been successful!
Looks like we maybe ok going to Italy with our 12yr old. Still via Geneva, so still a tadge complicated with 2 countries’ rules and locator forms but could be possible. I’m going to start thinking more positively and gather up our ski gear. And re-read the various PCR test requirements for both Italy & Switzerland to double check 48hr PCR prior to departure covers us all.

Yes - you wear your ski boots... Have fun!

I’ve seen passengers traveling in exactly the way silverbubbles describes…..

I guess clomping down the aisles in ski-boots might be the done thing on some dedicated charters but it’s guaranteed to generate some Hmm looks if you are just about the only person doing so on a scheduled flight where most of the passengers aren’t dressed or shod for the pistes…..

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 18/12/2021 08:48

Must be a pain at security getting them on and off! Snowboarders maybe...

TheElderleyBrothers · 18/12/2021 17:32

Roads today beautifully clear san bouchons! Pharmacie in the valley says no pass sanitaire required if we have evidence of a recent infection - we shall see what is said on the mountain.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 19/12/2021 14:40

Sat in hotel bar in Andorra! I honestly never expected to make it.

Well done, and enjoy the sunshine….we can’t be to far north of whatever bar you are sat in and the weather has been glorious here recently, post the massive dump of rain/snow we had just over a week ago.

The French Pyrenean resorts such as La Mongie to the west are reporting a roaring trade ATM, with pretty much zero hotel/chalet occupancy left over the Christmas/New Year.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 19/12/2021 15:07

Plane was half empty (it was diverted Toulouse to Barcelona) and our transfer bus only had 21 of the 40 people it was supposed to have.

notimagain · 19/12/2021 15:44

Be interesting to see how Andorra’s season works out.

Looking at the lunchtime news for southwest France it appears as if last week’s snow, the subsequent good weather and I guess the possibility of restrictions in the near future has got everybody rushing to the slopes perhaps a few days or more earlier than is normal…

Maybe some French will go beyond the border and take up any slack/vacancies left in Andorra by Brits who haven’t travelled….

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 19/12/2021 16:16

For anyone else who makes it... have your Covid passport downloaded to your phone home screen. You need it constantly!
