Tigresswoods · 01/12/2015 16:47

Hello!!!!!

DS & I are are off to Val Thorens in February. He'll be nearly 6. This year was his first year & I was staggered how quickly he took to skiing. Looks like all his gear will still fit which is great. Blooming expensive business this skiing but it is so worth it!!!

PestoSkiissimos · 01/12/2015 16:50

Well actually he should be a gatto bianco Blush

But I agree, he is handsome Smile

lovetoskimum · 01/12/2015 16:56

Tricky, someone mentioned to me too so no rushing to Aldi !! Where you off to on your holidays ?

Was too scared at parents evening !! Will most probably tell them after xmas! Slap writs !

Tigresswoods, I love seeing little ones ski, they are so funny, bombing down, no fear !! Yes agree so expensive but so so worth it ! Save like mad all year for it, we do keep saying that we will have a summer holiday abroad but within a week of coming home each year we are booked again :)

Ooh a skiing thread, yay! Can I join in?

DP and I are heading to Oz en Oisans (lovely quiet little family resort close to Alpe D'Huez), to manage/host a chalet for the entire winter season (mid Dec - mid Apr). It'll be our second season and I can't wait! Snow quality wasn't great last year so we learned to ski in pretty tough conditions and I had to really persevere to crack it. They've already had over 35cm this week, so I'm getting very excited!

BestestBrownies · 01/12/2015 17:14

I got salopettes, ski jacket and ski socks from Lidl last year. Wore them all season, they did a brilliant job and are still in perfectly good nick so am using them again this year Smile

Gattabianca · 01/12/2015 17:19

pesto He definitely looks like a gatto Grin

An entire season!! Envy Envy Envy

I suggested doing a season to DH the other day. He was Hmm

Gattabianca · 01/12/2015 17:20

Do you have kids Best?

clam · 01/12/2015 17:36

Radiatorvalves Yes we've spoken about that area before - although I can't now remember your previous incarnations! Am rubbish at names!

I like Risoul best, out of those resorts (plus Isola2000), but accommodation is an issue there. The skiing is great though. Nearly went for Montgenevre this season, but too far from Marseilles for transfers really.

BestestBrownies · 01/12/2015 18:20

Hi Gatta. DP has kids, but they're 19 & 21, so off doing their own thing. We have given up conventional life in favour of travel and adventure Grin Our working ski holiday pays for our travels over the summer. We went to Madagascar this year and are thinking about Spain and South America for 2016

crappyday · 01/12/2015 18:41

We're off to les gets in half term- horribly expensive but the only time DH could get off. We are taking the kids out for 1 day as the flights were so much cheaper, even though we have to pay for hotel for one night there. Coming back on Eurostar which we've not done before- hoping that crossing Paris won't be a nightmare!
Going with grandparents to help mange kids.
I'm very much a blues person- a bad fall on my knee a few years ago means I'm now quite a nervous skier unlike DCs!

BestestBrownies · 01/12/2015 18:54

Hi crappy. I was a very nervous skier too. If I hadn't had a whole season to crack it I'm sure I would've given up. Can you stretch to having a 1-1 lesson with an instructor? I found it was well worth it for boosting my confidence

Gattabianca · 01/12/2015 18:59

That sounds like a very lovely life Best Smile

crappyday · 01/12/2015 19:18

Bestest I have booked into ski school in a group 1 lower than they recommend for how many years I've skied. I always struggle when I'm in a group that is pushing towards harder reds. I'd rather go at a slower pace on easier slopes, even though an instructor told me 2 years ago I should push myself more. I don't want to be pushed, I want to enjoy it!

I also want to have enough confidence and energy left in the afternoons to go out with DH and DCs. Last year my morning group exhausted me and terrified me every day, and I spent far too much time panicking.

I refuse to spend a fortune and then be unhappy. Slow & steady- greens and blues for me!

clam · 01/12/2015 19:34

That's my mindset too, crappy. We haven't done ski-school/private lessons for years, but I hated that constant, "higher, faster, steeper" mentality. As soon as I hit an icy patch on a steep red, all style goes out of the window and I squeal in terror, bum goes out backwards and I go into an automatic snowplough! And I've been skiing nearly 15 years.

Give me an easy blue any day, and I'll swoosh down effortlessly. First sign of a blizzard and I'm in the nearest cafe for a vin chaud.

BestestBrownies · 01/12/2015 21:22

LOL clam! I am absolutely a fair-weather-absolutely-perfect-conditions skier too Wink I also don't see the point in testing your limits. Skiing is supposed to be an enjoyable experience. If I'm pushed I get panicky too. I spoke to several of the long-term instructors and they all said the same thing DP did, that I was over-thinking it and winding myself up. It's true that the more relaxed and comfortable I am, the better I ski

Trickydecision · 01/12/2015 22:22

Yes, Clam, the automatic snowplough in moments of stress. Or, as it is known here. the Mumplough.

Loveto, maybe tell the school at the last minute and avoid disapproving looks at least until after your return. The holiday you asked about is to the Maldives, just DH and me, one of the humbler islands. It will be our tenth and probably last visit there. Then back to hosting the family for Christmas. Skiing 9th Jan.

Radiatorvalves · 01/12/2015 23:38

Clam...johnogroats /fedupwithdeployment are the most recent incarnations! Agree re Montgenevre. We get to bottom of Les orres in 2 hours from Marseilles... With a bus, resorts near Montgenevre must be much longer... Turin must be better.

Recommending Risoul to friends who stay chez nous and want more than beginner lessons. Kids love the half pipe and the snow park in vars. in the summer we went to Pra Loup. Hope to spend a day on the snow (as opposed to cycling up the hill) this winter.

lovetoskimum · 02/12/2015 14:01

Clam, just realized who you were from last year :)

Best, same as you I feel that a lot of pressure makes not very good skiing, nice crusing on blues an occasional red skiing in the sun and then vin chaud !!

Tricky, enjoy the Maldives (ive only touched down at the airport, when I was cabin crew) What a wonder place to be going, have a fab time :)

This thread gets me through the dark damp weather :)

lovetoskimum We got the kids snow boots from moutain warehouse, really good and I've not bought wellies this year and they've served us well so far. They didn't cost a bomb (heavily reduced along with most on their site).

brownies I am envious of the season you're doing, running a chalet is planned for my retirement!

I would rather eat beans all year and ski to be honest. I'm hoping one of the kids gets spotted for the british ski team then I'd just have to move there to support them. What else would a good mother do Grin

We're hitting Ruka, courchvel and Cervinia this year... so I am trying!

LyndaNotLinda · 03/12/2015 09:54

I scored well at Aldi this morning. £17 for a whole kids ski suit is a brilliant price. And I treated myself to a new jacket and salopettes and some new goggles too (I think my goggles are 20 years old and my existing ski gear isn't much newer).

Good to know that SportsDirect also have some quite good prices as they had no socks left in DS's size.

Feeling quite excited now. I suppose I should book our flights!

lovetoskimum · 04/12/2015 12:32

Thanks don'tcall, funny enough looked in mountain warehouse as pass on my way to work, just need to get them :)

hubby is in process of booking a sneaky lads only week in Jan :( !! Our usual gang that go, one is 40 in March when we are going so cant commit !! As long as he buys me something nice :)

Lynda, I need some sock too, I always like Decathlon for fleeces etc, good quality and good prices :) Happy days !!

lovetoski find some girlfriends and go too! (Downgrade eating baked beans to plain haricot if necessary).

I'm going with the girls again this year. Once I started recruiting I was amazed at the response. Men always seem to go away with their mates, ... our turn!

dontcallmethatyoucunt · 09/12/2015 16:48

I should however say our trip (all in) is cheap as chips (well, for skiing), as it's not the bloody school holidays!

lovetoskimum · 09/12/2015 17:13

Don't, would love to but the only 2 girls I know who ski, can't go for various reasons, (one is 40 in March and having a big holiday for that and the other has 3 teenage children and a toddler - money !!) Hubby is going with their hubbys and 16 year old son !

I am ok as we are booked for our family one in March
We will continue to take daughter out as feb super expensive !!

girls are going to try a spa weekend in summer :) :)
