It's always fun to see if you can spot another MNer on the slopes Wink

Whippet - Les Gets - First week in Jan

OP posts:
MrsGuyOfGisbourne · 10/01/2012 17:03

Just back from 4 days in Les Menuires, followed by 5 days in Courchevel. Driving was an advnture as there were blizzards on the days we travelled, but the skiing was fantastic, and for anyone going this week the c nditons are perfect. Going back to les Menuires in Feb Half term...

Lexilicious · 17/01/2012 14:16

Right. Have been back from Les Arcs for 3 days now and my wind/sun-blasted top lip has split attractively. Yuk.

Les Arcs - fantastic. - almost totally crap.

Positives: The weather, off piste conditions, slope management, lifts, range of runs, Evolution2 Spirit instructor (thanks Viva!), crashingly low-season week so every piste half empty. Great value ski area for the lift pass price (Les Arcs 1800/Peisey/Villandry side and 2000/Villaroger side, plus one day in La Plagne = "Paradiski Discovery" for £210 ish). Those who booked with Crystal in August, not the moment the brochures come out but a couple of weeks later, got two passes for the price of one. We only booked in Dec so paid for both but I still think it's a good price. Some of the people in our chalet bought theirs online from the Les Arcs resort site and they arrived in the post two days later.

Unlike the old days the electronic proximity-sensorpasses don't have your picture on them, so they are effectively transferable. i.e. if you are going in a group where there will definitely be one of your party staying off the slopes every day (e.g. sharing childcare duty) you could buy one less pass.

Negatives: The chalet (part of the Chalet Des Neiges complex in LA 2000, built for the 1990 winter Olympics and never since updated) was crap. Heating was far too high for the rooms (unbearably stuffy overnight) and not high enough to dry out boots etc in the lockers. I went with my dad and the other occupants were groups of 2 or 4 - so everyone was sharing with people never met before. You couldn't lock your bedroom door while you were out, or even when you were inside asleep. You had to trust that the last out in the morning would remember to lock the front door or your valuables were open access to the street.

Not long for us now!

The healthy snowfall forecast for the next couple of days will do us nicely!

You packed yet HarrogateMum?

mulranno · 27/01/2012 01:56

We are off to Vaujany next Fri for a long weekend child free - bought and rennovated a little chalet there last year and rentals this (our first) season have been great - since the snow started falling - anyone go to Vaujany this year?

drowninginlaundry · 28/01/2012 21:57

just back from Les Gets, it snowed four days out of seven on top of the 2 metres the top runs had already, so fantastic conditions all week, it was still snowing when we left so anyone going to the Haute Savoie area is in for a treat Smile

our first time in Les Gets - will definitely go back, great family resort, lots of greens and blues and two nursery runs with the 'magic carpet' lift, our three made loads of progress. DD aged 3 years 2 weeks was out every day on her pink skis Smile Now the hideous amount of laundry to do...

suebfg · 28/01/2012 21:59

Skiing is so last season - I'm spending this season on the beach

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 29/01/2012 21:39

Just back from Ardent and I can second the fantastic snow in the Portes Du Soleil atm.

Suebfg - you're missing out Wink

MsTimTam · 30/01/2012 07:19

Back from a week in Belle Plagne - snow the best I've ever seen and we had sunshine and fresh snow while we were there Grin. Dd1 loved her first time on skis and I am jealous at how easy she found it Envy and had a proud moment watching her snow plough!

Even dh & I getting a nasty 24 hr tummy bug didn't ruin how good a time we had, already planning next trip Smile

FreeButtonBee · 01/02/2012 11:28

Oh I am getting soo soo excited. Am off to 3V on Sunday. Bring. It. On.

CaurnieBred · 01/02/2012 12:54

Have booked for 2013 now - Val D'Isere with Esprit: knowing when I am going again helps me get over being back from this year's trip!

clam · 01/02/2012 17:06

I have wasted SO MUCH TIME examining the webcams to see how much snow has fallen. 50cms in the last 48 hours, for a start. It looks fabulous.
10 more get-ups!

MsTimTam · 02/02/2012 14:04

Caurnie - have you been to Val d'isere w Esprit before? We've been with them to Belle Plagne twice now and I fancy something new next year (also planning next trip Grin)

MrsGuyOfGisbourne · 02/02/2012 15:10

FBB we're also off to 3v on Sunday - will wave to you on the slopes Grin

CaurnieBred · 03/02/2012 12:42

MsTT: Nope - this will be our first visit to Val d'Isere. Have been twice with Esprit now: Obergurgul and Selva and this will also be our first time in a large chalet hotel. All the reviews for Val looked fine - accommodation fairly standard for Esprit (ie, nothing special!), but DD is an only and she loves being around the other kids and adores the Snow Club and Cocoa Club so we decided to try here. Also looked at Mark Warner in La Plagne as a change but preferred the Esprit ethos in the end.

Plus we've been to Tignes twice pre-DD so I wanted to go and see what it would be like on the other side!

OneLieIn · 03/02/2012 20:12

Wioooooohoooooo st anton on Sunday GrinGrinGrinGrinGrinGrin

clam · 04/02/2012 16:50

I need to "share" this with fellow ski-lovers as you're the only ones who'll properly understand!
We're meant to be off next Saturday, but just had the worst afternoon in Urgent Care waiting for xray results, as DD has hurt her finger - bent it back scrapping with DS Angry . I only went down there in order to set our minds at rest and was thinking even in worst-case scenario of a little bone chip, they'd just strap it up to the next finger along and she could get by with skiing in mittens (yes, I know, shite mother award candidate!) But then the nurse started looking serious and muttering about metacarpal bone breaks needing plaster casts, keeping upright, NO skiing of course and possibly (I thought) no flying! DD and I were ready to collapse in terror.
Tense 15 minute wait for results.......... and ..... WE'RE OK!!!!! It's "only" a ligament strain and has been taped up.
I'm thinking of confining all of us to bed for the next week so no-one damages anything else.
Can you tell how much I've been looking forward to this trip?

StuckInTheFensAwayFromHome · 04/02/2012 16:57

Sat on airplane... Waiting for Manchester airport to deice the runway!
Hope it's better organised in Calgary Grin

VivaLeBeaver · 04/02/2012 16:59

Caurnie, I've been with esprit to val disere for the last two years and it's nice. Sure you'll enjoy it.

MiraNova · 04/02/2012 18:39

Courchevel for half term. We are driving down next Saturday, so really hoping all of the snow currently falling in the SouthEast will be gone from the roads by then..

UniS · 04/02/2012 21:56

Just back from Flaine- WOW, 12 inches of snow fell on Tuesday and we skied like heros on Wednesday, getting fresh tracks on red runs at 11am!

Stayed at Le Totem , with Crystal. Childcare ( whizzkids) was fab, DS loved it. and such a stress saver having whizzkids take him to ski school, meant we could catch first lift and miss the scrum of the ski locker room. Hotel is basic, and a bit tatty( rumour had it the place is being gutted in the summer) warm, food plentiful at lunch time , smaller portions in evening. Take ear plugs, piste bashers passing at 2am and noisy lifts/ central heating pipes did not make for good nights sleep with out them.

IWishICouldThinkOfAFabName · 07/02/2012 17:04

We had a great week with Esprit in Courcheval the week before Christmas - very cold but lots of snow. Hotel was in great location, rooms were a bit tired but large. Lovely staff although they were still learning the ropes as it was the first week of season ( and the cheapest so can't complain !).
However, awful journey into Chambrey airport due to storm. Sat on tarmac at Gatwick for 1.5 hours before taking off ! We usually drive so DH gave running commentary each hour on how far we would have got in France had we driven (not helpful). We were lucky to land in Chambrey in the end - lots of other flights were diverted to Grenoble or Genva.
Off to La Plagne at Easter in a catered chalet and driving again this time. Hope the good snow stays.

MissHaviCLAM · 08/02/2012 08:54

3 and a half more get-ups!!!!!!

(The "half" being that I'm not technically up yet!)

CaurnieBred · 08/02/2012 10:30

VivaLeBeaver: thanks for that.

MsTimTam · 08/02/2012 11:15

Thanks Caurnie & Viva, we like chalet hotels (dh has odd prejudice against chalets - odd considering he's never been to one Grin) so Val might be a good change next season.

So wish I could go again this season! I have single skiing friends with holidays to take from work, no children and disposable income and have taken to harassing them into booking their flights - these conditions not be wasted Blush

MrsGuyOfGisbourne · 08/02/2012 14:08

Clam - I do undestand you relief! First time i took the Dc sking, DS2 fell down the stairs the night before injuing his arm, and DS1 was up all night vomiting..
Two weeks ago DS2 had a bad tackle in football and injured his ankle. Ignored it for a few days then took him to the minor injury unit, where they said he should do not sport till AFTER Shock half term. Needless to say he was not impressed, and nor was I. On the way home he told me if 'felt fine GrinWe bought a supportive bandage in the sports shop, and he has played football several time since then and had tow days of paintballing, so assume he is ok to ski Grin
