Hello.

It's been pointed out to us a few times now that our Acronyms and abbrevations list needs updating.

So, since you're the ones who really know your AIBUs from your AFAIKs, please tell us what you think should get the chop (if anything) and what needs adding.

TTFN (not that one, pls!)

One I have seen used elsewhere which I would personally use is JFGI. (Just fucking Google it) - for those pointless posts when Googling would be a whole lot quicker than posting on here and waiting for somebody to reply.

How about DFTT - don't feed the troll?

cariboo · 18/04/2010 12:46

BM = bowel movement?

BelleDameSansMerci · 18/04/2010 13:10

CBA - can't be arsed?

DrivenToDistraction · 18/04/2010 17:23

Nah, it's LMGTFY, give it a try...

ronx · 18/04/2010 17:43

It took me ages to work out that OH stood for 'other half'.

leavingonajetplane · 18/04/2010 18:08

Apologies BitofFun I was well aware you mean nothing flippant using it and should have mentioned that. Its just become used in a flippant, in-joke manner by some posters and my guess would be giving it an acronym might triiger some of them to do it more.

Kristina I did have the same POV you have - I thought it was great and awareness-raising and posted to say so.

But Ive unfortunately seen it used as a joke quite a few times -

Ive seen it used with big smiley faces when posters are talking about their ex-husbands dalliances, or even someone behaving badly after drinking a lot. I dont like how some posters think its a line to pop in when anyone is talking about any bad behaviour.

I dont know why they think its funny no.

Its great when it is being said as a genuine point, yes, especially when someone then realises there are less visible special needs. The majority of the time it is being said genuinely and thats very helpful. But sometimes it really isnt.

Depends on the poster I guess.

I do think skipping an acronym for it could help keep it at the level of a genuine statement as much as possible.

Have seen DTD around on quite a few threads - does anyone know what it means?

@ smac
I would also like to know how boak became such a widely used word on Mumsnet! Being from Scotland, I use it quite a lot here and in RL, funny to see it used so regularly!

DrivenToDistraction · 18/04/2010 19:42

Had a rummage in the archive and DTD is twin daughter, apparently.

Pingpong · 18/04/2010 21:12

DTD can be Do The Dance (as in Baby Dancing which gets the MN thumbs down) or Do The Deed - same thing.
someone must know more abou boak on MN surely?

Nyx · 18/04/2010 21:39

What about 'yy' - I've no idea what that means but have seen it reasonably often. Does it mean 'yes yes' or something?

MsSpentYoof · 18/04/2010 22:24

DTD can also mean "darling twin daughter"

Well I thought so

thumbwitch · 19/04/2010 00:41

yy does mean yes yes, Nvx.

There are quite a few prolific Scottish posters on here so I assume came from them originally and then diffused across the boards.

Does NO one know what WIMBEWAIN stands for?

elliemental · 19/04/2010 09:42

IITASWYGW?
(If I Throw A STICK, WILL YOU GO AWAY?)

elliemental · 19/04/2010 09:43

MIFPGBTYOP
(Mumsnet is Full, Please go back to your own planet)

Nyx · 19/04/2010 10:18

Thanks Thumbwitch - sorry, no idea about WIMBEWAIN!

KristinaM · 19/04/2010 19:35

boak / boke/ boak is indeed a Scots word that means to retch or vomit

see Scots dictionary here

Pingpong · 19/04/2010 21:26

yeah thanks kristina we know it's Scottish what I was wondering was how to came to be so popular on MN, so far it's just thumbwitch saying it's diffused from the prolific Scottish posters. I suppose it's a bit like fanjo that is just an 'in' MN word. . . . .

HelenMumsnet · 20/04/2010 10:47

Thanks for your suggestions, everyone.

BTDT

I had to ask about that one

gigglewitch · 20/04/2010 23:34

I've just read this whole thread since I posted somewhere earlier on. And I have tears running down my face, it's the best laugh I've had all week, and BoF really made me LOL, much to the disdain of DH who is watching a film...

Pingpong · 20/04/2010 23:39

EP - ectopic pregnancy - was going to suggest it the other day but didn't know how often it came up but it's very relevant in chat right now

Fimbo · 20/04/2010 23:53

Please add

4 - who cares

DreamTeamGirl · 21/04/2010 00:23

Maybe its just me, but how about including

XP- ex partner
XH -ex husband -easier than tying it all, although I only use XP, due to XH being from about 50 years ago for me

DreamTeamGirl · 21/04/2010 00:23

Oh and WWYD- what would you do

treacletart · 22/04/2010 10:15

OP - opening/origanal poster
is not on the current list
