we feel have very offensive names?

I don't want my dcs looking over my shoulders and seeing certain nicknames and asking what they are.

Thank you please

itsmeolord, it was funny on that thread, and I can see why you are somewhat lacking in objectivity, as you said, you were the op of the original thread. You see her name as homeage to you. I get that.

TsarChasm · 29/09/2009 09:56

Not so much a matter of censorship, more of manners.

There. I am officially old .

hullygully · 29/09/2009 09:56

Would anyone care to tell me why cunt is offensive?

daftpunk · 29/09/2009 09:59

hobbgoblin...what someone does or says in the privacy of their own bedroom is fine...but this is a parenting site....i don't want to see fuck (and worse) all over the place

QuintessentialShadow · 29/09/2009 10:00

it is not so much the cunt in itself.

It is what it conjures up. Say we substitute for Vagina. Fine. It would in my opinion, still be offensive in the context. Vagina Whacker, Cunt Whacker. So what it might be seen as a sexual practice, and as a grown up, I can deal with that.

But, it is a lot more violent than just a sexual practice. And the name can be seen in a non sexual context. And that is what I find both offensive and degrading, and humiliating.

itsmeolord · 29/09/2009 10:00

Ha ha ha ha! I don't see it as homage at all. I made a joke. You have chosen to take it literally although I would have thought the after my comment would have been a clue?

I'm not lacking in objectivity any more than you are. I don't like people piling into have a go at any one person in particular in the way that posters have been today.

PestoLovelyMonster · 29/09/2009 10:00

Hobbgoblin, everyone is different, and what I might find offensive, you might not.

But, I am not asking for swearing/certain words to be banned. I am just asking that we can have the facility to hide names if we want to.

OP posts:
hullygully · 29/09/2009 10:02

What cunt/vagina conjures up is offensive? Or just with whacker after it?

Would it be all right for someone, for example, to call themselves "dopey old cunt?"

QuintessentialShadow · 29/09/2009 10:03

Granted, itsmeolord, but sometimes even the smallest and insignificant event may bring on a philosophical debate. In this case, censorship and (self) moderation.

TsarChasm · 29/09/2009 10:03

Hully it it generally recognised as an offensive swear word.

Yes we all know that it refers to a vagina. If you want to be medical about it, what it is in reality, then no it's not offesive, but used in context as a swear word, then it is; to many people, if not you.

You didn't know that?

QuintessentialShadow · 29/09/2009 10:04

hullygully, yes, the context. It might as well be.... cunt puncher.

hobbgoblin · 29/09/2009 10:04

There is no argument - LOTS of people do find words like the C word (censoring for the sake of this thread) offensive, there is no doubt. But why is that? The only image it conjures up is of fanjos surely and that is no biggie, or is it something else.

i'm inclined to think it's because we've been told it's a bad word for yonks and that is actually the only reason. Conditioning. I don't like conditioning, except the hirsute kind.

Tsar - I don't really understand the swear word concept. How about if we all agree they are just words like any others? After all, they don't refer to anything horrid like killing or starving, just to nice things like vaginas and lovemaking.

hobbgoblin · 29/09/2009 10:05

total lack of ?s in above post

hullygully · 29/09/2009 10:05

Quint - okay, it's the context, so you wouldn't mind "dopey old cunt?" Fair enough.

morningpaper · 29/09/2009 10:06

Basically cuntwhacker needs to change her name really because she is offending people

A poster called 'donkeypunch' would be equally reviled

that would resolve the issue wouldn't it?

Sonnet · 29/09/2009 10:07

I agree with Pesto, blackduck, and QS - so there!

If my dcs are bored enough to start reading MN over my shoulder, I really am doing a poor job as a parent....

Some of the funniest things on MN are littered with swearwords.

TheMightyToosh · 29/09/2009 10:08

These words are mostly used in offensive contexts, as insults or expressions of aggression.

That is why I personally don't really want to see them when I am on here looking for a thread about breastfeeding or washing powder.

I have no problem seeing or hearing these words on TV in the evening.

But there is a time and a place for that kind of language, and babytalk at 11am is not it.

hobgoblin - does your 'collection of letters' argument extend to offensive racist terms too?

Sonnet · 29/09/2009 10:09

In fact I have disliked the launguage used in some posters names for a while now but have been too scared to say anything in case they come and virtually beat me up! .

By virtue of their chosen names they make me think they would be capable of that type of behaviour

QuintessentialShadow · 29/09/2009 10:09

hullygully, I am not sure.

English is not my first language, and I might be somewhat less sensitive to some of the swearwords, than others. I would not use the word cunt myself, because I know it is offensive. But when I see certain words juxtaposed and I gather the meaning of the words in question, by seing them in context, then I object to the meaning, rather than the actual word in itself. Does that make sense?

Dopey old cunt can be used affectionately, even though the word cunt is offensive. But that is because of the word "dopey". Insert fucking instead, and you get "Fuckign old cunt" and it is something totally different.

CrackWhoretoPaulDacre · 29/09/2009 10:11

I come here to be an adult, not to amuse the children. When DS is old enough to read the screen (I keep the font size down) then I shan't be MNing with him around.

Is my name offensive to you?

And for your information, I do go on to DV threads where I can offer support or advice. I'm a volunteer for WA, and haven't had anyone complain so far...

hobbgoblin · 29/09/2009 10:12

I think it is safe to say that women tend to find swear words more offensive than men. Does anyone actually consider the fact that by getting all het up by this we perpetuate the 'fragile female' myth. Would we all prefer to talk about kittens in non sweary terms? These are just words, and it is possibly a little unnecessary to get our knickers in a twist over their use. Can you imagine a male forum even starting this discussion?
