Truncated nicknames

KayHarkerInTheBackOfTheQuattro · 20/04/2009 13:36

Me being incredibly childish, I know, but one of the joys of MN is being able to change to a silly name for any occasion. I appreciate there's a restriction on the amount of characters in a nickname, but how come, even if my name passes the character count, it is truncated when I post?

It does make having a longer nickname a bit pointless as you can't even see it. I shall have to spend another 3 hours trying to think of something vaguely Gene Hunt related now.

What should your nickname be then??

SoupDragon · 20/04/2009 13:44

I see KayHarkerInTheBackOfTheQuattro

KayHarkersBlueMascara · 20/04/2009 13:59

It's not showing up on mine. I've changed it to something else now - but it's still not showing longer nicknames in full. Meh.

KayHarkersBlueMascara · 20/04/2009 14:00

KayHarkerInTheBackOfTheQu... is all I can see.

KingCanuteIAm · 20/04/2009 14:03

I see all of it. Is it a screen size thing?

procrastinatingparent · 20/04/2009 14:04

You're all there. IYSWIM.

KayHarkersBlueMascara · 20/04/2009 14:08

Well, I don't know - I've maximised the window and it's still doing it.

Still get the ruddy great blocks of white and blue space in between posts at the top of the page too, but I've got used to them now.

KingCanuteIAm · 20/04/2009 14:11

I don't get any of that now, are you on new or classic?

KayHarkersBlueMascara · 20/04/2009 14:12

I have no idea, I shall go and check...

KayHarkersBlueMascara · 20/04/2009 14:16

I'm on new. Oh well, blue mascara it is.

KingCanuteIAm · 20/04/2009 14:25

Hmm, maybe it is a "New" thing, I am afraid I took one look at new and defected straight back over so I have no real knowledge of it!

serenity · 20/04/2009 14:46

I'm on Classic and and I could see it all (change it back, go on)

KayHarkerInTheBackOfTheQuattro · 20/04/2009 14:57

Right o, I've changed to classic, and yup, I can see it all now.

There I was trying to be all forward-thinking and use the new set up. That'll teach me to be a reactionary stuck-in-the-mud after all!

OP posts:
KingCanuteIAm · 20/04/2009 17:16

Yup, there is nothing quite like joining the grumpy old lady brigade

KayHarkerInTheBackOfTheQuattro · 20/04/2009 17:20

Old? Old?

BecauseImWorthIt · 20/04/2009 17:24

So no guesses where you'll be at 9.00 this evening, Kay?!

KayHarkerInTheBackOfTheQuattro · 20/04/2009 17:41

Oh, watching Henry VIII, of course.

OP posts:
KingCanuteIAm · 20/04/2009 17:42

Won't you be in bed with cocoa and bed socks like the rest of us then?

HelenMumsnet · 21/04/2009 11:24

KayHarker: the truncating is a MN New thing - long nicknames were causing massive (and annoying) white spaces on thread.

So now, in MN New (but not MN Classic), nicknames are automatically truncated after 25 characters.

We know it limits silly-nickname-changing a bit. But we're sure you're up to the challenge

flowerybeanbag · 21/04/2009 11:27

25 characters is one thing, mine seems to be truncating after 10, which is a bit much imo

HelenMumsnet · 21/04/2009 11:43

I know, flowerybeanbag .

Sorry: the Techs just released a new thingummy and it's gone a bit over-enthusiastic on the truncating.

Give us a sec and nicknames will in future only ever truncate if..

  1. They are over 25 characters long
  1. They are over 20 characters long in a post at the top of the page - once the post moves down (if you're viewing threads last post first), the name will display in all its untruncated beauty.

KayHarkerInTheBackOfTheQuattro · 21/04/2009 14:17

Thanks HelenMumsnet, I did think it was probably something like that.

Oh well, I'm back to using Mumsnet Classic which hadn't been working for me after the big changeover thing, so it's all fine

OP posts:
TheDevilWearsPrimark · 21/04/2009 23:22

woohoo mine is 20 characters so will never face truncation.

It has been annoying though, it's still doing it after 10 characters.

MARGOsBeenPlayingWithMyNooNoo · 22/04/2009 15:34

Oh dear, it's time for a name change.
