Refund for a stroller

My mum purchased a stroller from Toys r Us, 2 days ago, it wasn't suitable. My mum couldn't find the receipt, I took it back and they were quite happy to give me a credit note, fine. However, paid £29.99 and still on the shop floor for £29.99, TrUs wanted to give me £24.99 as it was on sale over 4 weeks ago!!

Is this legal!! This doesn't seem fair...

They don't actually have to refund you at all if there's nothing wrong with the item.

Without the receipt, they don't know when your mum bought it - as far as they are concerned she could easily have bought it 4 weeks ago.

they don't HAVE tio refund at all unless its faulty but they are "supposed" to offer the current selling price if no proof of purchase, depends on when the sale was and the discretion of the staff there really

don't think that the op is questioning whether or not she is entitled to the refund.
she has accepted a credit note.

what she wants to know is whether they can give her a lower amount than the pushchair is currently selling for.
and the answer I believe is no. you shoiuld be offered the current price back

actually its up to the manager what to gve back. as the stroller was a sale item within the time frame of a normal returns policy -4ish weeks- then she could have bought it then. obviously in this case she didn't but the stre don't know that

You don't need a receipt though, you need proof of purchase which could be a bank or card statement. Oddly enough, there is no legal requirement for a store to give you a receipt (I've been googling ).

it wasn't a sale item.

it had beenb on sale previously, for £24.99

it was purchased after this, at a price of £29.99. the current selling price is still £29.99 and that is what should have been offered back

unless you have had some use out of it... which the OP hadn't.

as soupdragon says, you do not have to have a receipt anyway. but some form of proof is in your favour obviously.

they don't have to refund anything, but if they do they have to refund the current price.

Except it was on sale recently and the OP can't prove the full price was paid. Given that it's only £5, I'd imagine if the OP/her mother went back and demanded to see the manager they would give a full refund for goodwill purposes.

They didn't have to give anything at all back, so they are perfectly within their rights to offer a credit note for the lowest recent selling price. Many shops are tightening their refund policies.

Shops are only legally obliged to offer a refund or exchange etc if the item is faulty.

4 weeks is recent if the store refund policy is within 4 weeks though (ours used to only be 2 weeks)

I have a feeling they can refund whatever they want with no proof of purchase and no fault. You could have walked out with the stroller stuffed down your trouser leg and not paid at all

I think consumers have a lot of rights. If your mum hadn't lost the receipt or had proof of purchase you would have got a refund with no problem whatsoever.

They could refund the lowest ever selling price even if it was 5 years ago if they like because they don't have to give any sort of refind.

I wasn't going to say that but it's highly unlikely that the op would ask for advice without having bought the stroller
