If you (still) feel the need to discuss Moldies [part 2]

This thread is a continuation of this one. That one had become too big for its own boots the system to handle.

OP posts:

next thing, people start pratting about with the new forum technology. you will be shocked to hear that it has avatars. which soon started breaking the internet so lapin started helping people with them and so got lumbered with dealing with all techie questions.

anyhoo... one of the things that the utterly crappy forum software offers is polls, so it was mooted that this might be the way to bring new people on board. (it had been decided btw in the meantime to invite justine as they never wanted to be doing it on the sly and also not to use MN or CAT becasue that would be a bit shit).

the polls... yuck. horrible. someone's name and a clicker for yes or no. MP saw this system, onebat didn't. swedes very soon started a thread saying that she didn't like the system and was joined by quite a few others agreeing, including MP who left wishing everyone luck buut saying she felt that MN was worth sticking with for her. coolio.

so that system was scrapped, like, immediately, maybe it lasted two days. there was never ever any debate.

with me so far?

ruty · 02/01/2009 23:03

listening Aitch. Appreciate the honesty.

ruty · 02/01/2009 23:04

Avatars? Creepy.

ClausImWorthIt · 02/01/2009 23:05

If you tell me there were tickers then I'll really know that you're lying ...

oopsagain · 02/01/2009 23:05

I think to add to what aitch is saying- it depened when one arrived on moldies what they saw as part of the process of sorting out new memberships.

It was/possibly is (i've left now) an evolving system...

Don't know what I'm doing here either as I've left Mn too- grrrr, new year's resolution out of the window
new year actually starts on Monday, doesn't it????

Heathcliffscathy · 02/01/2009 23:05

i was late comer and missed the polling system altogether.

Aitch · 02/01/2009 23:05

mucho debate was had, however, as to how the new members could be decided on. you think this has been navel-gazery, well think on.

younger members, amongst whom i number, had never experienced this dinner party thing, so weren't that fussed about new members, but others really were. lots of privacy issues, genuine ones, lots of people using their real names and their kids names and a bit of putting photos up etc. i got the feeling that everyone already knew each other.

(oh, and i should've said from Day One a global posting at the top of every forum to the effect that 'this is not narniagate, please don't use this place to slag off MN or MNers).

onebatmotherofgoditschilly · 02/01/2009 23:06

But in that very short space of time, were individuals discussed and their merits debated, Aitch?

chipmonkey · 02/01/2009 23:07

avatars!

onebatmotherofgoditschilly · 02/01/2009 23:09

Yes, that's true. But it didn't always work in practice. The predictable people did discuss MN, then edited their posts to remove those references (you can edit your own posts om Moldies).

For example, there was some discussion of the MN London Xmas meetup.

myredcardigan · 02/01/2009 23:09

Stop now! This is creepy voyeurism. It's like you're the Beckhams nanny telling us about their sex noises!

OyeComoVa · 02/01/2009 23:11

but some of the molds had pictures of their children and named them on mn before the moldiegate saga

Quattrocento · 02/01/2009 23:11

Aitch, can I ask how Moldies obtain new members now? How does the recruitment process work - does it involve current MN members?

Aitch · 02/01/2009 23:11

that rule has been more or less adhered to, i think it's safe to say that recent events have put it under severe provocation but i personally have been pretty surprised at the restraint shown. some pompous bugger (occasionally me ) pops up to say 'narniagate'? and then people start apologising and deleting. you can edit on there.

so anyway, a new system was decided on, whereby everyone would add x and y poster to a list, not unlike the christmas meet up lists here, and if you saw someone you had a major objection to you could PM (CAT) one of the mods and they would note it. i never quite got an answer as to how many no votes would make someone not get invited but it wasn't enough to be one. i nommed some people and they mostly didn't get through, which was annoying because i knew they were good eggs (some may even be on this thread... ) and became a bit disenchanted.

IorekByrnison · 02/01/2009 23:11

Thank you, aitch. Yes, I can see how it would have started to go horribly wrong with the polls. Am a little surprised that someone thought this might be a good way to bring new people in, but then again we all make mistakes.

You said onebat didn't see this system. I seem to recall someone accusing her of sour grapes because her nominations weren't accepted or some such (have I got that right?) - so what was the system for nominations prior to/following the yes/no poll?

OMG Aitch, you are the Kitty Kelley of Mumsnet!

More, more!

Aitch · 02/01/2009 23:13

onebat, the merits and demerits of people have NEVER been discussed. never. just a poxy poll. click for yes or no. hand on heart.

IorekByrnison · 02/01/2009 23:13

Sorry - double x posts.

oopsagain · 02/01/2009 23:13

I never saw any big discussions of other people.
and if any had overstepped the mark re discussing anything on Mn then it would get deleted fairly quickly as I saw a few edited posts, but no slagging off.

myredcardigan · 02/01/2009 23:14

Yes, does Posh moo like a new born calf???

IorekByrnison · 02/01/2009 23:14

Certainly is spooky. Aitch, were you ever given a reason why the mn'ers you nominated were refused?

DaddyJ · 02/01/2009 23:15

Oh what's this? Came to have a tense convo with hunker
but will drop that sharpish.

Keep this dialogue going and the 2009 Nobel Peace prize is yours.

IorekByrnison · 02/01/2009 23:15

Oh god, sorry - new laptop and no mouse
