Would it be a good idea to add to MN posting rules

  1. You may use AI to help formulate your opening post if you need help with organising your thoughts / want help with literacy but you must declare this at the start of your OP

  2. A follow up poster may post an AI version of a long / difficult to comprehend opening post but must declare at the start this is what they have done

  3. No other AI use is permitted when posting.

Well I have the right to reply to any post I want.

Did you find the long answer supportive of your belief?

So you believe some of my recent posts are AI?
How strong is that belief?

If a human reads an AI-generated suggestion, checks its reasoning, agrees with it and openly shares it because they think it will help another parent, why should that contribution be less welcome than the same advice written without AI assistance?

That's from both Chat GPT and me

It's about the poster's reason for being here. If they're here for human connection, as well as advice, then they want the advice to come from a human. I can understand that. They want to know someone took the time to read, think and type out a reply. That effort is precisely what other humans react to and feel a bond with as a result. Vs someone copying and pasting a couple of times and then moving on.

Take for example, people who join forums, social media groups or friendship groups just to advertise themselves or their business, or to find babysitters(!). You think you're talking to someone who has the same intention as you - to be your friend, but then you realise eventually, that they just want someone to house sit or look after their dog, or to sell something to you. When you realise that the other person is putting no real effort into your relationship: it leaves you feeling empty. That isn't a perfect comparison. But hopefully, it helps some people understand why some of us take issue with it.

If I wanted an AI reply, I would just go and ask AI!

What if a poster used AI to help compose their thoughts? I used AI to analyse some episodes of Cabin Pressure which I thought I knew but they opened up some more. They enabled new discoveries which would be interesting for discussion on say Radio Addicts. Threads aren't just for support or advice. They are for chat - I have loved my Cabin Pressure threads

Personally I think an AI art topic would be fascinating, Give them an idea and they really make it happen. Can you see the one at the top of ChatGPT talking about AI with Mumsnetters. It's got a scarf and there's roast chicken. AI can be so inventive.

Belief? You're making it sound like a cult.

I don't think you're describing what I was talking about.

Use AI for yourself by all means, but I wouldn't want to interact with someone who was filtering themselves through AI - for the same reason I don't want a video call with someone using filters to look different. It's not really them and I don't want to interact with a fake version of them.

BertieBotts · 22/10/2026 22:40

I wouldn't mind it as a rule, but MN is not moderated in a way that would enable enforcement of it, so it seems pointless to actually have a rule, as most people will ignore it or be completely unaware of it.

DevastatingFinish · 22/10/2026 22:44

The market will speak I think. I automatically click away from a thread when the OP is AI, and scroll past any long generated answers (although I might start saying something) and whether AI posts continue will depend on how we as the users respond to them. If they don’t get many replies they will stop being used eventually. If they do generate a lot of traction, then that’s the people deciding isn’t it.

If other people wanted to discuss Cabin Pressure with a bot, they would go to a bot. People post here because they want to know what other humans think.

AI is bloody everywhere. It seems to have taken longer to ruin MN than it has everything else, but it’s seems to be on its way to doing that now. Think I’m going to have to stop using the internet altogether at this point apart from essential tasks like banking. So fucking sick of those shitty pictures that all look the same and reading the long-winded drivel it comes out with. I actively avoid using chatbots, so I wish people wouldn’t bring it here (I would make exceptions for someone with literacy issues or learning difficulties).

Personally I find AI very useful in getting over a complex explanation into an image that clearly explains. the problem. AI is also a very funny yet astute image maker that can be given a prompt to make a funny and perceptive image.

An image speaks 1000 words.

Waitingfordoggo · 22/10/2026 23:09

I couldn’t disagree more @cakeorwine . I find it uninspiring and unimaginative. I find the images completely devoid of humour.

People always make the mistake of thinking art is created for them.

Better than art that's been created by a machine.

And yes, I used AI to find that cartoon. I knew Calvin had a lot to say about art and I would have used the internet to find it and post it.

But AI found it after a prompt. I felt the image and Calvin's words spoke volume to the art discussion.

So AI helped me track a memory to make me laugh and to make a visual point on a post,

Calvin would be impressed

Can you explain what responses you find tiresome? You might like to reference the OPs rules she suggested on a discussion thread in Site Stuff
