IMO, there should only be one or two brands of formula... they are all much of a muchness and closer to each other, not breastmilk.. there are first milks, second milks, toddler milks, hungry baby milks, night time milks ( FFS!) , ones with added fish oils etc etc etc

so confusing

i can see there are questions with regard to formula feeding that need anwsering, but the reason breastfeeding should be more heavily prmoted and encourages is the benefits to mother and baby.. however good formula is , it is not breast milk

QueenMeabhOfConnaught · 24/06/2008 16:20

When I was pregnant first time round, I felt that bf was really heavily promoted, to the point where it actually put me off doing it. It is possible to go OTT with these things.

FAQ · 24/06/2008 16:21

one or two brands of formula???

Not sure they're that "similar" to each other TBH.

Aptimil (biggest mistake of my life) disagreed HORRIBLY with DS3, and SMA Gold was like giving an apple to a Lion for his dinner and expecting him to be happy . So SMA White worked for both of mine (greedy little pigs LOL).

sfxmum · 24/06/2008 16:28

I would agree to the OP being 'promoted' is not the same has having proper support when the time comes.
I did not attend ante natal classes and BF was barely discussed with midwife pre baby.
I was quite clear that BF was the way to go for me and did not even consider FF

still, when the time came I had huge problems and zero help from the hospital. the help we eventually had, was from volunteer organisations

so yes just paying lip service to a slogan is not good enough

hunkermunker · 24/06/2008 16:32

I started a thread to ask whether there were going to be breastfeeding support guidelines and got shouted at for not saying explicitly I wanted bottlefeeding support guidelines too and accused of not understanding ffing mums need support too. Nice summary of my motivation and my thoughts on the subject - utterly wrong and not backed up by posts on this thread or elsewhere, but hey, why let the facts get in the way of a good slang?

I DO believe that better breastfeeding support would lead to better bottlefeeding support because if you train healthcare professionals better, there is a greater understanding of the issues surrounding the whole thing.

But this thread has gone tits up and nobody's been helped by it, so well done you lot.

i am hearing you hunker!!

yes, i do think that FAQ.

the beauty of breast milk is it is adaptable, wheras so many formulas make it a guessing game.

some babies are just windier, more unsettled, hungrier.. i do not have that much faith that one partic type of milk makes that baby more settled and less windy. but that is not to say i am right!

the formula companies are in it for the money. end of.

infant feeding in itself is a minefield, there needs to be universal access to the correct information re breastfeeding and bottle feeding. but the misinformation about breast feeding far outweighs that re formula, IME and IMO
