Video ads at top of page that you can't click to get rid of

Is this a new feature now? - video ads playing at the top of the page that you can't click to get rid of? They just keep on playing.
It's really horrible.
It's an M&S ad mostly but there are others.
I'm on an android phone on the mobile site.

Hi @Jshkag

Thanks for asking about this. Any ads at the top of the page should have a close button which, if clicked, means the ad shouldn't show again for the remainder of the session. Is there no option to close this particular ad? Or is the button not working? Either way, please could you post a screenshot so we can take a closer look.

Thanks in advance.

Floraflower3 · 28/05/2026 13:44

I had this too whilst using the site through safari on my iPhone. I will try to screenshot next time this happens

@JoMumsnet thanks for your reply, no there is no close button on the ad. I will try to screenshot it when it next happens

Thanks for clarifying that, @Jshkag

A screenshot would be great if you can manage to grab one. Thanks in advance.

GandTtwice · 29/05/2026 10:39

@JoMumsnet I am having the same problem, hopefully the screenshot shows what you need

Thanks for the screenshot, @GandTtwice

We're taking a look and will be back with an update (or more questions) as soon as we can.

Helleofabore · 30/05/2026 09:05

Hi @JoMumsnet , I have noticed also that these videos and ads at the top seem to be getting slightly bigger. Maybe it is my perception because the ads have no rejection button

Helleofabore · 30/05/2026 09:12

And my iPhone always seems to glitch over the ads meaning that I have to swipe an extra swipe to scroll down. Or when I inadvertently touch the ad to scroll over it, it opens.

Of course, added to that those ads do also seem to be longer in size within the threads now too. Meaning there is greater chance for a misswipe and greater chance of opening an unwanted link.

I think it is pushing the usability of the site.

Video ones are so annoying! If I’m playing music through my phone, it cuts out because of the video ads. Infuriating!!!

Jshkag · 31/05/2026 12:00

@JoMumsnet three different ads that play videos with no X button to get rid of them

I am honestly sick of it, I have just had a B&Q advert and a L'Oréal on playing at the same bloody time. What is the update @JoMumsnet ??

PlumPlumb · 11/06/2026 20:27

What is going on with this!! It's playing ads with no way to shut them off without coming out of mumsnet.

It's playing them like a separate music player. I'll try and get a screen shot.

Yes that's exactly what's happening, yet it seems that Mumsnet are ignoring the issue

PlumPlumb · 11/06/2026 22:16

Here - you can see the mumsnet browser is actively playing something.

I have no control over this - it just randomly starts playing an advert with the sound on unless I have turned the volume down on my phone. It's scared the absolute shit out of me a few times.

I've a record screen recording as well of it randomly just playing something but it's not something you have any control of within the mumsnet page, you have to come out of it to stop it or turn the volume off on your device. It plays even when the device otherwise on mute.

It happens every 5 mins or so

...MusiCozy is the name of my Bluetooth sleep headband that it just blasted through but it does it when not connected any headphones etc as well.

Hi all,

Huge apologies for the delay here.

Thanks to everyone who's posted and included screenshots. We're really sorry these ads are still causing issues for some of you - we know how frustrating this must be. We've been investigating but could do with some more info if possible.

@AncoraAmarena are you able to provide a screenshot of any page where these ads crop up and the audio starts playing again? If you can also listen out to what advertising is playing in the background we'll be able to hone things down further.

We'd also really appreciate it if anyone can post the URL for any page these ads are appearing.

Thanks again for bearing with us.

PlumPlumb · 12/06/2026 18:41

It's just done it again now for me. This time playing a loud advert for La Roche Posay. Couldn't see the add anywhere on the page - you can just hear it.

Triskellion75 · 13/06/2026 12:22

This is really doing my head in now, it's not happening on this thread but every single one on AIBU and it's constant.

BeckyAMumsnet · 13/06/2026 16:19

Hi all.

Thanks for posting. Just to be clear, this isn’t something that should be happening. Ads shouldn’t be randomly playing sound, they shouldn’t be carrying on in the background, and anything sitting at the top of the page should have a way to close it.

From what you’ve posted, it sounds like there may be a couple of things going on here with visible video ads without a close button, and also audio starting up when there isn’t an obvious ad on the page at all. We’re looking into both as a priority.

The really useful things for us are still the page URL, and the advertiser if you can see or hear who it is. Screenshots or screen recordings are also very helpful, but we do appreciate it’s a pain to have to catch the thing in action.

Thanks to everyone who’s posted examples so far, and sorry again, we know this is incredibly annoying.

PlumPlumb · 13/06/2026 18:36

I've got a screen recording - an M&S advert pops up for a second playing music and then disappears but the music carries on. I only know it's M&S because of the recording it's gone too quick too see 'live' when it happens

Not sure I can add a recording here though?

@BeckyAMumsnet @JoMumsnet What URL are you asking for? The URL of the page that we are on when it happens? Because if you're asking for the URL of the advert itself you won't get it. As others have said, there is no video or picture advert, just an audio.

It has just happened AGAIN and it was for a mouthwash. This is really unacceptable now.

AncoraAmarena · 13/06/2026 18:52

And AGAIN. NO words this time, just bloody music.
