Why do threads continue to come up in 'Trending' even when I hide them?

Seems trivial I know, but it's a bugbear of mine...

For example, there's a thread currently running that started today, where a poster has felt the need to tell the whole of Mumsnet/the internet that her son has done a poo so massive that it's blocked the toilet. I mean, really?! Confused

Whether it's true or not, I neither know nor care, but it made me feel queasy when I saw it, so I hid the thread. But it continued to stay on trending for much of the day... 'Large poo stuck in waste pipe!' was flashing up in trending since it was started at 13.45pm to about 7pm tonight.

I have no idea why people feel the need to start threads about such things, but I don't wish to see it, so I hide the thread, but it stayed in trending even when you have hidden it. Even the thread title is gross.

Can anything be done about this? Is it possible to stop threads you have hidden appearing in 'Trending?'

Just wanted to add, some people might hide threads that are triggering, but still see the thread title in 'Trending' all day.

I hide the abelist/benefit bashing ones and also any Farage ones
I keep seeing them when I'm on active and hide again.

That's the kind of thing I'm on about @Alderraymyheartisindanger

Mine does this on active - I hide them then they pop up again, it’s infuriating.

Thanks @quarrybanks Glad it's not just me.

Hi @BatchCookBabe

Thanks for asking about this. We're sorry if that particular thread put you off your lunch AND your dinner yesterday.

The trending box displays the threads that are the most viewed ones at that time - so while hiding a thread will mean it doesn't appear in your list of active conversations, it will still show in the trending box because that isn't tailored to individual posters.

It's always worth reporting a thread to us if you have any concerns - we can manually remove a thread from the Trending box if we think it's going to be off-putting to a lot of Mumsnetters!

😆 And my supper too, as I kept having this image of a pipe with a 💩stuck in it!

Oh, of course, yes.. Smile I understand..

Thanks so much Jo. I will do that if I see anything a bit icky and grim again. 😬
