Try the new 'support' reaction

LizzyMumsnet · 14/10/2025 13:53

Many of you told us that while you enjoy using the ‘Thank’, ‘Agree’, and ‘Love’ reactions, there are times when you want to show empathy or care, especially when someone’s going through something difficult, without it feeling like you’re “loving” their situation.Starting today, you’ll see a new reaction available on the site called ‘Support’, represented by a flower icon. Here’s how it works:

  • Select the ‘React’ button underneath the OP or reply.
  • Choose the ‘Support’ reaction (or any of the others) to show how you feel about the post.
  • Reactions are private and only visible to the post owner.
  • You can select one reaction per post.

The full range of reactions is currently available on the website only (not in the app). We hope this gives you another meaningful way to connect with others and show care when it’s most needed.

Let us know what you think or if you have any questions! We're actively looking in to the issues being reported regarding ads and pages freezing so please bear with us on that!

They are all a bit pointless if nobody can see them tbh and it’s annoying to get emails because someone reacted to a post. Either show them or don’t bother with them

We can’t all be as expert as you at dealing with this stuff

You can if you simply apply yourself, dear!
Grin

I dunno. Break the Talk guidelines, don't break them, play the ball, play the man, post "this is why we need the laughter emoji" every time you find something funny, have a sense of humour, don't have a sense of humour, report posts, don't report posts, use a toilet brush, don't use a toilet brush, accuse every OP of making it up, use AI, accuse everyone else of using AI, feed a troll all day long, if that's the sort of content you want to read! (General "you" - I don't think JaneJeffers is guilty of any of that).

Do what you like; I was only trying to answer a question Grin
(Just don't post about black canvas PE shoes)

@ComebackStory adjust your notification settings if you don't want to be notified. I couldn't stand the thousands of emails I got a day thanking and agreeing with my expert posts Wink

You can turn the emails off.

JaneJeffer · 14/10/2025 19:21

I’ve just given up trying to engage in any conversation on here that doesn’t involve television. It has been made clear to me that I am barely tolerated by MNHQ

ComebackStory · 14/10/2025 19:29

Oh yeah! I’ve just done that! Which kind of makes it ever more pointless 🤣

I've been here nearly 15 years and my personal bugbear is people/companies using MN for free advertising.

For all those years I'd immediately report spammers the minute their posts appear.

Now it's too much of a faff to scroll up to the meatball menu, scroll to the report button, scroll the reason for report, hit report and return to the thread or the topic.

I don't think you've done yourself any favours there, especially at night when spammers seem to be around the most.

I agree, I ignore them now because I can't be arsed to report.

You see. We need the laugh emoji back. I have hey fever. I'll be offended if anyone sends me the flowers emoji. 😂

🤣consider it done lol

You can report it and challenge the content. Please do!

'Play the ball, not the man' is always a good tactic for productive debate.

Also if they're a racist troll then attacking the person directly is exactly the engagement they want. They then derail the thread. I've been on online forums for 30 years and "don't feed the troll" is still A+ advice. Talk past them or comment on the general argument they've made, and report it. They hate it if they don't get a response. (Not saying that all racists are deliberately trolling but I bet many are).

i will continue to disagree with you and MN on this. I have no issues IRL telling someone to stop being racist. And while i can't do that here, i have the facility to make it clear i am doing exactly that while not exactly doing that.

Which is just as bad as what those racist posts do.

Sometimes people who are reading along need to see racists being called out.

Am I the only one imagining the flower emoji being used like this... 😆

YouMightLikeCats · 15/10/2025 12:24

Surely it's better to point out how a statement - that many reading it may silently agree with - is discriminatory, rather than one specific person? The latter means the nodders-along can go "it's that person that's bad, not the position they hold. They haven't produced a reason why that is wrong".

It's absolutely fine to prefer to read a forum consisting of personal attacks rather than critique of views. But in that case the current setup with the Talk guidelines will leave you disappointed.

JaneJeffer · 15/10/2025 13:56

Oh yes let’s baby those poor racists in case we hurt their feelings

DuncinToffee · 15/10/2025 14:11

Gently explain their racism without hurty words

REP22 · 15/10/2025 15:58

@LizzyMumsnet Just seen the new support reaction icon. I like it very much. I'm active on one of the long-running and very active support threads, which is a much-valued safe and important space for me and many others, and this new icon is a welcome addition. Thank you.

FWIW I agree that it was right to remove the laughing emoji reaction icon. As much as I appreciated its original purpose, and was gratified to receive one whenever one of my posts had amused people, I can well see how easily it could be abused for unkind purposes to torment the vulnerable.

Best wishes. x

That's not what I'm arguing, is it? I don't care if their feelings are hurt.

This insistence that it's too hard to argue against racist speech is getting a bit weird tbh... I will leave it there.

There’s no difference between saying someone is a racist and saying the thing they said is racist. They will most likely deny it and report you for your post in either case. But those fuckers are sneaky and find ways to skirt the rules so that if you report them MN will tell you they haven’t broken the guidelines. Then if you tell MN you are displeased with their moderation they will say they don’t like your tone, etc.

I’m pleased you have found a way to chat with those people but it doesn’t work for me.

AutumnCosy2025 · 19/10/2025 20:39

JustineMumsnet · 14/10/2025 16:01

Yes I take the point. That was our stance for quite a while - we asked people to report it and dealt with the culprits. But it became too widespread, and too many posters were simply hurt and left rather than reporting. We’re really not trying to punish anyone, just to find a balance that keeps conversation lively but respectful. And I know it's not quite the same but we do have the clap, thumbs up and love emojis...

Thanks for your reply. I know it's not easy. Lots of ticks & hard places!!

Just had a thought....

i wouldn't like arrows or thumb up/down but how about making the smiley something others can see? it shouldn't turn into a popularity contest, just a quick way to publicly acknowledge a witty post.

oh & while you're here, any chance of making the quote function better by it returning you the post you quoted once you post your post. It's so difficult finding the post again in the thread it's just not worth the effort to reply to a oust if all you want to do is pist a smiley

JaneJeffer · 19/10/2025 21:16

Never seen a thread being deleted from site stuff before Hmm

Try the new 'support' reaction
HebeMumsnet · 19/10/2025 22:03

Hi @JaneJeffer . You're right. We don't tend to delete threads in Site Stuff. Generally speaking, threads here don't require deletion and we want to be able to see them and hear users' thoughts.

We think the one you're talking about here was a bit of an anomaly in that we weren't convinced the user was genuine and it was quite an inflammatory thread, so we took it down while we investigate further, as per the deletion message.

JaneJeffer · 19/10/2025 22:18

Thanks for this - we'll definitely take a look at quote and think about the smiley suggestion

@AutumnCosy2025 if I’m quoting I bookmark the post first so that I can get back to it easily
