Ads have really slowed down page load - site becoming unusable

I’m on an iPad using Safari. Mumsnet is becoming unusable - the pages are just taking so long to load because of all the blinking ads.

Om the plus side, gone are the days when I could fritter away an hour or two on Mumsnet. My patience runs out in a few minutes now. But it’s hard to see how the ads are going to bring in revenue if half of us just don’t stay around to see them.

100% agree. It’s ridiculous.

WearyAuldWumman · 11/10/2025 23:39

I'm finding it particularly difficult with my phone.

AutumnalSweater · 11/10/2025 23:40

The ads are ridiculous. You can barely read the post with three videos dancing around it.

deadend · 11/10/2025 23:42

they ate also so FUCKING MASSIVE they cover the whole phone screen so it’s difficult to scroll past them without clicking on them accidentally meaning having to go back to the site after closing the unwanted ad down.

I guess it all counts at ‘hits/clicks’ revenue though so there is no incentive to make them smaller.

BustopherPonsonbyJones · 11/10/2025 23:59

I agree. It has got slower and slower over the last couple of weeks. The ads are just too fancy to load. I can’t be bothered to wait when it’s laggy and give up.

soupyspoon · 11/10/2025 23:59

Im on a laptop and its affecting my whole functioning

EmeraldRoulette · 12/10/2025 00:00

Same here

I didn't bother reporting it myself because I'm tired of being asked to screenshot, screen record, click on the advert that's causing the crashing, etc etc

It means I'm here less which is probably a good thing.

AutumnedCrow · 12/10/2025 00:02

Try using an ad blocking browser for MN.

XelaM · 12/10/2025 00:06

Totally agree. It's become unusable. Ads cover the whole screen and make it so slow to load that I can't read the actual posts.

BettyRizzoSlaps · 12/10/2025 00:10

Couldn't agree more - and I cba reporting it either, because I feel like everyone is expected to jump through hoops to prove it, and it never gets fixed anyway!
For a site this size, it's really bad. I used to waste hours here, now I just do something else, so I suppose that's something.

BustopherPonsonbyJones · 12/10/2025 07:49

They also make my screen freeze to the point I can’t even get off the site. I’m stuck looking at a half-loaded advert for ten minutes unless I shut down my device completely. It’s a shame but also good as it stops me wasting as much time on here!

Watto1 · 12/10/2025 07:53

People have been reporting this issue for ages but nothing changes. I can’t even leave the page to go on another website entirely. So annoying.

Educating · 12/10/2025 07:53

Same here, I give up after a few minutes now.

AramintaWildbloode · 12/10/2025 07:55

I gave up.
Finally forced me to subscribe which is perhaps why this issue never gets sorted.

BlackberryAppleCrumble · 12/10/2025 07:57

I saw this thread, but couldn’t scroll down it on Chrome on an iPhone. Swopped to Safari with ad blocker and managed to load it (slowly) so I could agree with everyone else - I barely use MN now as loading a thread usually fails about a third of the way down.

Weirdly, if I have MN open in a tab I also find other tabs work slowly or not at all - so now I close my MN tab rather than leaving it open to glance at when have a moment.

I’m spending so much less time here that I’ve read a whole series of books.

2025VibeandThrive · 12/10/2025 08:03

The ad in the right hand corner is a video with no x so I can’t end it. The ones with an x disappear for a few seconds before popping back up.

The ad in the bottom right is a fixed ad but grows in size as I scroll down the page.

Very often there is also an ad between the text posts in the middle of the page.

I did start a thread and comment on a few other threads of this nature. MN HQ emailed me and asked me to record my usage so they could see what is happening but like a lot of those on this thread, I couldn’t be bothered. I know that’s lazy but there is no pattern to the crashing or refreshing or loading. Sometimes I can read for 5 minutes without an issue and sometimes it crashes 5 times in 5 minutes.

Oh that’s interesting. I didn’t put two and two together until you said that but yes, other open tabs seem to run more slowly for me too when Mumsnet is open. But the site itself is sometimes virtually unusable.

I do use the app, which runs better, but I don’t like the reduced functionality, like only one reaction emoji and the fact that you can’t select just one section of a post to quote. Sometimes I only want to quote one sentence from an otherwise very long post. And there are a couple of other things I’m not keen on that are more to do with navigation. I much preferred the old app.

ComfortFoodCafe · 12/10/2025 08:23

Same here, the website is unusable. The ads need to be massively cut back, they must be making a canny bit of them so not sure why the refuse to cut back. Even on the app, i end up accidentally clicking on them 5-6 times each time I scroll through. Angry
point blank refuse to subscribe for the ad free use, just fix the website or they will loose users.

BustopherPonsonbyJones · 12/10/2025 10:12

Yes, same issue with other tabs too. It affects them all - but not all the time.

mum2jakie · 12/10/2025 10:13

Freezing for me this morning too

JDM625 · 12/10/2025 10:18

We've been complaining about these issues for months and yet nothing is done. The flashing, adverts moving around the screen and covering other adverts.

They just ask 'which add is causing it? 'Send a screen shot'. NO- I'm not going to promote your shite adverts even more. I no use a greet card over part of my screen to obscure some of them!

Shryykjrg · 12/10/2025 10:18

Yes it’s really bad. Also the page keeps reloading so I get part way through a thread then it reloads and goes back to the top and I have to scroll past the ads again to get back to where I was, read a few more posts, then it reloads again…

Giggorata · 12/10/2025 10:24

Same here and they ask for more info or screenshots and then… nothing changes.
Particularly infuriating is typing a post, only to have the page crash and reload, and lose the lot.
I'm on here a lot less now, too.
There's little joy in it.

It also happens to me. All. The. Time. The reloading and going back to the top. Then I scroll back to try and get where I was and passed all the bloody ads and it pauses. Sigh.
