WTF is going on with the page loading?

Is anyone else having issues with MN talk pages loading? Honestly it’s like being a child with my parents’ dial up…. Only MN, no other website. I can’t work out if it’s loading the ads or just MN trying to force a subscription.

Used to go on in Malawi in 2009 and it was faster!

I was in Malawi in 2007 and can confirm the same. I don’t know what’s going on but it’s been like this for months now. Most frustrating.

ModeratelySocial · 26/08/2025 23:06

Yes, the same, but always at a similar time at night. Refusing to load or refresh at anything other than a snails pace after about 10pm.

larkstar · 26/08/2025 23:14

Has anyone tried clearing the cache in there browsers?

Cutleryclaire · 26/08/2025 23:14

Yes. But I changed from chrome to duck duck go and it improved. So I thought it was a me problem.

Has anyone tried clearing the cache in there browsers?

Yep. No difference.

Linenpickle · 27/08/2025 07:07

The site is ridiculously slow. It literally takes minutes for pages to load, and clicking on links either is non responsive or just takes forever. It’s just too painful and been going on for ages. On the up side, I’m reducing the time spent online!!

JamesWebbSpaceTelescope · 27/08/2025 07:09

It’s the ads plus trackers etc… I’ve changed browser, also to DuckDuckGo, and the difference is huge!

Hatwontfit · 27/08/2025 07:12

I might try that. I thought my phone needed updating.

WifeOfAGemini · 27/08/2025 07:15

Same here but my problem is Safari! Chrome is fine. I find this happens every now and then, a flip-flop between browser speed. Really weird.

HebeMumsnet · 27/08/2025 11:35

Morning, @DonnatellaLyman. Can you tell us what sort of device and browser you are using and we'll take a look.

Switching browser may help, but the other thing you could try is going into your settings and making sure you are on 'view 50 posts per page' rather than 'view all'.

Snackpocket · 28/08/2025 21:36

I’m having the same issues using safari on my iPhone. It’s actually getting painful to use this site. I understand other browsers might be better but I use safari for everything else and it’s fine so it’s annoying that seems to be the solution!

pookypup · 28/08/2025 22:11

Having the same issue with safari on an iPhone 12. Device is fully updated and have cleared cache. It seems significantly worse in the last week, to the point that most of the time, active conversations page will not load at all.

Lorrymum · 29/08/2025 09:32

Problems loading on Safari, taking ages to load and causes Safari to quit.

Divebar2021 · 29/08/2025 09:37

I have an issue now when I come into MN. It loads ok but as soon as I open a thread it freezes. Takes about a minute to unfreeze but as soon as I scroll to an ad the screen goes blank and freezes again. I downloaded the app and have no problems on that and have not encountered this glitching on any other sites.

SoManyTshirts · 29/08/2025 09:52

I have had this issue using safari, now using the app instead. Safari took so long to load it just froze.

FranksInvisibleLlama · 29/08/2025 10:06

I use chrome on an iPad, and mumsnet is mostly literally unusable now. Pages take minutes to load or don’t at all and most of the time I can’t click on any links. Sometimes closing the browser and reopening helps but not always. I cleared the cache as I have seen that suggested. It helped for about 10 minutes, but every so often there’s a good 10 minutes anyway where the pages take maybe 10 seconds to load and I can click from one page to another, so that could have just been a coincidence. I am typing this on safari on my phone because I don’t think typing a post would work with how it is on the iPad, but I see other people saying it doesn’t work on safari for them. When mumsnet crashes and the page won’t load at all it also affects other websites I have open on other tabs. If I close any mumsnet tabs all other sites work fine. I already have it set to show 50 (or less? I can’t check because the page won’t load enough for me to click Settings and check!) posts rather than all.
Is there any hope that this will be sorted as it obviously isn’t just me and my iPad, or do I need to start searching for something else to do with my time?

I’m using safari on an iPhone. It won’t load up enough for me to change my settings.

Same here, on Safari it became unusable and I’ve gone on the App, but I don’t like it. It’s been going on for several weeks.

ScurryfungeSpuddle · 29/08/2025 22:56

Using Chrome here and once a thread gets over about 300 posts, it's very slow to load and despite only pressing 'post' once, I keep double posting.

And no, I don't want to go back to pages.

I want to be able to use the one page function, but I just want it to work like it used to.

ItsHellOrHighwater · 29/08/2025 22:58

It’s been awful for weeks. iPad, safari.

HobnobsChoice · 29/08/2025 23:01

It's the ads. It's always the ads making the site slow to the point of unusable. It's the only website to have more adverts that Reach News websites. I think my record was close to 80 adverts and associated bumpf loading on one MN thread. I know it's a business model but it's absolutely making the site impossible to use and the one thing that did work MN blocked unless we pay for premium

HobnobsChoice · 29/08/2025 23:13

Just as an example here is the screenshot of this thread using AdBlock plus. There are 82 ads and cookies that tried to load on this page. This is why it's so slow but MN don't ever say this but continue with all the 'what browser and what model of phone are you using' guff when they know this won't resolve it. MN have 67 staff and a turnover of £9.5million but still behave as the company is run from a kitchen table and as though the internet and the message board which drives most of the traffic is a complete mystery!

HobnobsChoice · 29/08/2025 23:13

This is the level of ads running on a very short thread

WTF is going on with the page loading?
CatAsstrophe · 29/08/2025 23:16

It's the ads and cookies causing the problems. The overload of ads, including the intrusive video ads, is obscene, but MNHQ don't care as they're earning millions.

AugustDieSheMust · 30/08/2025 03:30

Thank you so much for their contributions to this thread! I downloaded an ad blocker on my iPhone and instantly everything is much faster.

After a few seconds I got a pop-up from MN saying that I was using an ad blocker and would I disable it, as ads are where their income comes from. My answer is no, as having ads makes the site unusable on my phone.

I haven't disabled ads on my desktop as MN still runs well with them on anyway, so I'll put up with seeing them there in the spirit of supporting the site.
