Endless one post OP threads

Hi MNHQ. There’s a rash of one post OPs at the moment. Normally goady, made to wind up, not enough detail and then the OP never returns. Hundreds of posts, no OP in sight. AI, goady trolls, idiots? Who know, probably a combination. But it’s getting silly. Could we add to the guidelines and make it a reportable thing?

I don’t mean someone who is a regular who forgets, or is just slow. I mean like the current one with 600+ replies about trans ‘hate’. Or the vegan at an BBQ. Obviously a wind-up but people bite.

Someone suggested it was a little club somewhere (probably some twatty boys’ club) that had a contest going for who could do it the most. Can we please knock it on the head?

Ironically, I will be going out soon so won’t reply quickly!

I was just thinking this. I can't be bothered doing an advance search but a lot of threads don't have the voice of a Mumsnetter.

TheBuffetInspector · 13/07/2025 15:53

I agree, it's so noticeable that I always click see all OPs posts on any potentially goady threads now. Surprise, surprise - End of posts!

gamerchick · 13/07/2025 15:54

I check read all when it's a chunky thread to see if the OP has come back most of the time. It's not worth investing in something that's just a hand grenade.

Spies · 13/07/2025 15:56

I agree and it definitely feels a lot more noticeable in the last few days.

WarmMJ · 13/07/2025 15:56

Agree. It does seem targeted and disruptive.

Allthegoodhorses · 13/07/2025 16:03

I agree, but often they are easy to spot. If a thread is lengthy and so obviously goady I do a ‘see all’ first and most of the time not surprised the OP has not been back.

CurbsideProphet · 13/07/2025 16:05

Yes fully agree , it's very obviously deliberate.

NescafeAndIce · 13/07/2025 16:11

I agree, I find them particularly irritating especially when everyone piles in with the same thing. But I don't know how essential MN would see it for Being In The Spirit to do away with these? I imagine they'd rather give the benefit of the doubt in case it's genuine.

I know what you mean but I don’t think the ‘trans hate’ ploppers are in the same category - we get those fairly often, almost as if they’re on a rota.

The childfree vegan at the BBQ does feel like MN bingo though.

Edited

Normally they are just the endless drive-by scolds, or for screen shots. But the recent one does seem like more one thing than t’other.

It’s all very well if you know to do the See All or the filter doohickey. But so many people don’t know.

Hobnobswantshernameback · 13/07/2025 20:38

reported a goady trans one
all good apparently
all about the clicks innit
oh and the goady vegan one

yonem · 13/07/2025 20:44

I agree, a lot of OPs recently have felt like AI. I’m trying to avoid responding to them. I’ve actually recently quit Reddit for this reason, I don’t see the point in talking to a robot.

TheAutumnCrow · 13/07/2025 20:46

I’m sick of reporting, reporting, reporting twatty threads, only to find that MNHQ is apparently winding people up by email by drawing attention to them. Not cool.

There’s so much fucking froth-bait on here now.

I hid the vegan bbq one - has MNHQ deleted it yet, or fan-flamed it via FB/emails/website??

I’m in a mood.

senua · 13/07/2025 20:46

Normally goady, made to wind up, not enough detail and then the OP never returns.
And we're not allowed to say "interesting first post, OP" any more to give people the heads-up.

MNHQ could send an email to the perpetrator telling them to come back or be de-registered, and if they fail to return then the thread gets deleted.

That's disappointing to know. And Not In The Spirit.

It’s still running. Obviously reported by loads of people but not deleted. Does modding not run over weekends?

TY78910 · 13/07/2025 20:52

I saw a similar thread to this recently (I think it was a suggestion to auto delete after a period of time of OP not returning) and someone said that although yeah it is annoying and clearly created to stir the pot, there can be good discussions that other posters have as a result of said thread.

I’ve been on many threads which got good discussions and then I wake up in the morning and it’s deleted and I never know how it got so spicy it got deleted!

But I do agree with you about the goat threads, especially around the topics in OP 🤣

justasking111 · 13/07/2025 20:57

It boosts traffic unfortunately

Doyoumind · 13/07/2025 21:06

It brings traffic but makes the site unappealing. I spend far less time here than I used to. I find threads boring or baity. The quality has certainly gone down.

Lds1 · 13/07/2025 21:12

Next to the number of replies, I'd like another number next to it in a different colour for the number of ops replies. If theres no replies on a long thread there's not much point reading it.

I do this too.

RufustheFactualReindeer · 13/07/2025 21:17

I agree

its goady and so not in the spirit

you couldn’t move for ‘not in the spirit’ thread deletions a few months ago

now even the goadiest threads are allowed to stand

and there is a certain poster who constantly create threads which they have no interest in coming back to

This. Winds up the newbs but the crusty old posters all see what’s happening and it makes the place quite annoying.

Or indeed if there’s only one short one, early on. That’s another ‘trick of the trade’.
