Fake virus page taking over

Twice in the past twelve hours I’ve had a fake virus page appear and take over my screen while reading posts on Mumsnet. Each time it was on AIBU, but different posts.
The only way to get out of it is to close the tab.

It looks very much like a hijack or man-in-the-middle attack.

It’s happening to me too- safari. iPhone. It goes when I use the back button.

Is my phone infested with something? Curry’s blocked my access to the site, as they said it was.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for bearing with - we understand how frustrating this must be.

We're still working on a more permanent solution but for now we're manually blocking these domains. We've blocked all of the domains that have been shared on this thread so far, but if anyone can grab the URL for the McAfee one or any other new ones that are popping up, that would be a huge help.

Thank you - and again, we're so sorry for all the disruption these ads are causing.

This is the macafee one:
https://cleanbyte.icu/avs/en/mob/mfee-2.php?c=1mz11qlt7z7oz0&k=f210b395d51431fa2e2c9dbbb44949d2&country_code=GB&carrier=-&country_name=United%20Kingdom&region=Belfast&city=Belfast&isp=Sky%20UK%20Limited&lang=en&os=iOS&osv=18&browser=Safari&browserv=&brand=Apple&model=iPhone&marketing_name=iPhone&tablet=2&rheight=0&rwidth=0&e=5

but interestingly it launched another tab for me with another macafee scanner and when I go on to my phone history to fetch that link it tries to take me to a fake Walmart website - it’s like it changes URLs every time

LilyMumsnet · 14/07/2025 14:51

Hi all

We're still investigating the cause, and in the meantime, we're manually blocking the URLs as we discover them. We're adding the latest shared links to the blocklist now.

We're sorry we don't have a full resolution for this just yet - thank you for sharing the URLs and bearing with us. We'll post as soon as we have an update.

@LilyMumsnet

thanks for the update, appreciated.

How poor is your IT that this keeps happening
back again
zero problems on other sites
your obsession with ad revenue is allowing crap like this to happen

DuckWithOneWing · 14/07/2025 19:47

I've had this today too

tinyspiny · 14/07/2025 20:42

I’m not sure that it’s to do with ads. I have a feeling it’s a hacking

BingoWasHisNameOo · 14/07/2025 22:15

I have a feeling it’s got to be related to a data leak/hacking - I don’t think individually blocking troublesome urls is at all effective as more seem to be popping up faster than you can tackle them.
mumsnet is no longer a small scale website so it’s bizzare that more isn’t being done/ looked into to get this issue sorted with urgency.
Ive had it happen another 3 times today.

SwedishEdith · 15/07/2025 10:52

Just had it again. Not posting the link here as no idea whether that's useful. The city in the link is not my location but is the same city every time.

Funnywonder · 15/07/2025 13:34

Aside from getting those scam ads a handful of times, I’m finding the site increasingly frustrating to use. I don’t know about other platforms, but I’m on Safari on an iPad and scrolling takes forever while all the ads arse about with loading and reloading. There was even a delay in the text appearing for a while when I started typing this comment, although that isn’t as bad now that the ads know I’m busy, so definitely won’t be looking at them😆

BeckyAMumsnet · 15/07/2025 16:21

Thanks for all your posts and for sharing the info with us. Just to reassure you: this isn’t linked to any data breach or hacking attempt - it is an ad we don't want that is circumventing our filters. We’re working closely with our ad security partner to close this gap and prevent these types of ads from appearing in future. At the moment it's just a case of blocking them when we see them. We don’t yet have a timeline for a fix, but we’ll keep you updated as soon as we know more.

Thanks again for your patience, and please do keep reporting anything that looks suspicious or out of place.

I keep having to do a factory reset on my IPad if I go to MN on it. This is not a quick process. If I don’t pages are very slow to load, principally but not exclusively on MN.

I thoughtlessly followed a link from a MN email while I was on my iPad last night, and immediately my pages slowed.
