Fake virus page taking over

WingsofRain · 07/07/2025 08:56

Twice in the past twelve hours I’ve had a fake virus page appear and take over my screen while reading posts on Mumsnet. Each time it was on AIBU, but different posts.
The only way to get out of it is to close the tab.

It looks very much like a hijack or man-in-the-middle attack.

Fake virus page taking over

HebeMumsnet · 07/07/2025 10:26

Morning @WingsofRain and others. Thanks for flagging this. We're trying to track this page down as we speak. What would be really useful is a url to the page itself (please don't click on the scam links within the page). You can get a url of the page by using incognito mode and then copying the url. If anyone is able to post that here that wold really help us in tracking it down. Thank you!

Thanks so much for your help with this, everyone. We're blocking the domains as they are reported to us. Please do let us know the url and where you saw the fake pages if any more pop up. Thanks again.

I’ve reported my own post and sent you the URL

Thanks for sending the URL, Motherfluffers. We're looking into this as a matter of urgency and will report back as soon as we can.

Thanks, @WingsofRain and everyone else who's posted (or sent us) screenshots and URLs. We'll be back with an update just as soon as we can.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for bearing with - we understand how frustrating this must be.

We're still working on a more permanent solution but for now we're manually blocking these domains. We've blocked all of the domains that have been shared on this thread so far, but if anyone can grab the URL for the McAfee one or any other new ones that are popping up, that would be a huge help.

Thank you - and again, we're so sorry for all the disruption these ads are causing.

Thanks, Chemenger

Hi all

We're still investigating the cause, and in the meantime, we're manually blocking the URLs as we discover them. We're adding the latest shared links to the blocklist now.

We're sorry we don't have a full resolution for this just yet - thank you for sharing the URLs and bearing with us. We'll post as soon as we have an update.

BeckyAMumsnet · 15/07/2025 16:21

Thanks for all your posts and for sharing the info with us. Just to reassure you: this isn’t linked to any data breach or hacking attempt - it is an ad we don't want that is circumventing our filters. We’re working closely with our ad security partner to close this gap and prevent these types of ads from appearing in future. At the moment it's just a case of blocking them when we see them. We don’t yet have a timeline for a fix, but we’ll keep you updated as soon as we know more.

Thanks again for your patience, and please do keep reporting anything that looks suspicious or out of place.
