Is MN an anonymous site

100thtime · 06/07/2025 19:11

I joined MN thinking it was an anonymous site for exchanging opinions and asking for help for problems etc.

I thought we were all supposed to be equal on this site, although in the past have been upset by other posters " ganging up" and joining together to bully other posters , including myself on occasion.

It was a revelation to me today to find out from another thread today that actually other MNers are friends with each other in real life, that they know each other's real identity, that they socialise with each other in real life, attend Christmas parties together.

I would never have set up an MN account if I'd known i was intruding on a friendship group.I think l think MN should be transparent as to that iswhat it is: a friendship group and is not actually a site for people to interact with each other equally on an anonymous basis.

Bizarre OP.
I've been on here for 20 years and never met anyone in real life, or messaged anyone privately.

OP I think you’re being deliberately obtuse, ignoring all the posts reassuring you.

I remember the night you lot buggered off to a Christmas/NYE party, tech was left in charge, subsequently lost all control and had to shut the site down until Justine got back and fixed everything.

Man, that's going back a bit Grin

I know, personally, about 20 people on here. We ‘met’ on threads about shared interests, took it on to Facebook and developed real life friendships from there.
20 out of about 6 million users. I’m still pretty anonymous!

ExitPursuedByABare · 06/07/2025 20:59

I remember that. It was madness.

Number456 · 06/07/2025 20:59

Tech!

That was a long time ago.

Audience Insight at Mumsnet

As the UK’s number 1 platform for parents, with an average of around 700k user posts every month on Mumsnet and 8m users across our portfolio, we understand what parents are talking about, what matters to them and what they need.

It’s been difficult to fit everyone in the Dog & duck so I’m actually still in the queue to get in, I think I’ll be here for a few months yet as the queue is massive, in the meantime I’ll keep posting and pretending it’s anonymous.
What matters to me and what I need is a pint right now 😂.

CheeseWisely · 06/07/2025 21:01

I tell you what OP the group chat’s a fucking nightmare with 9 million members (well 8,999,999 if you’re not in it). I usually keep it on mute to be honest.

I remember the MN Christmas presents …

When I was very new here, and a bit overexcited about it all, I signed up to send a gift to someone. The first time, I practically bankrupted myself - the recipient made a lovely comment about what she’d received in a thread, though it eventually transpired that she was far richer than I was. The second year, again bought the loveliest things I could, and paid for proof of delivery because they were going a long way. The recipient acknowledged receipt. But not a single word of coded thanks in the wildly complex post Christmas MN Santa thread.

I was glad when it was shut down …

Tcateh · 06/07/2025 21:05

Cod, you shit stirring again 😂?

WhereOnEarthIsMyPlanet · 06/07/2025 21:08

OP, do you think we all know each other?

SemperIdem · 06/07/2025 21:09

RedNine · 06/07/2025 19:23

It used to be so back in the early days. No MN Christmas parties or meeting for prob nearly 20 years I reckon.

The site was small and we were wet behind the ears about keeping ourselves safe in Internet interactions. Haircurlingly awful in fact.

I remember when I joined back in 2012 maybe, and some of the longer standing users had profile pages with a headshot, not dissimilar to Facebook! Mad to think about now really.

ChocolateGanache · 06/07/2025 21:13

There are 8 million users on here op.

whynotmereally · 06/07/2025 21:13

Some people find common ground, chat regularly then end up exchanging private messages/ contact details and become friends. I was friends with a group for awhile although tbf I didn’t note their usernames.
It's a choice and if you feel you have given recognisable information online you can ask for it to be deleted or change your username. You don’t have to give anyone any info and can remain anonymous

Caaarrrl · 06/07/2025 21:16

It's either a wind up or OP is just mental. Not sure which.

HebeMumsnet · 06/07/2025 21:30

Evening, all. It looks like the OP has left now. Given that this was a bit of a TAAT, too, we think it's best we close the thread to new posts now.
