MNHQ: Thread of the Day

BellaMumsnet · 22/04/2025 09:44

Hi all,

Starting today, some of you may notice a new pink lightning bolt icon appearing at the top of the trending box.

It’s a new way we’re using to highlight a ‘Thread of the Day’ - a conversation that we think you’ll find interesting, timely, or worth jumping into.

The icon won’t appear for everyone right away, as we’re introducing it gradually and trying out different ways to surface engaging threads.

We’d love to know what you think - feel free to drop any feedback or questions below!

I have it.

Who decides it and based on what criteria? Because I assume most of the threads wold be considered timely or interesting if they are trending?

How often does it change?

My concern is that is seems to be artificially directing traffic to threads and could potentially seen as gatekeeping.

Edited to say that on my trending board that thread has some of the lowest engagement so curious as to why it was picked?

Hi @MrsMitford3, thanks for your message. While the Mumsnet team selects the Thread of the Day, it’s based on metrics like early engagement and momentum rather than us artificially steering traffic to threads because we want eyes on them. It’s more about giving a gentle nudge to threads that are sparking interest but might not yet be right at the top. We'll keep an eye on any feedback and be looking at the general impact on thread engagement and will make adjustments where needed. Definitely not about gatekeeping.

I'd hate it if that happened to a thread I'd started, bad enough it they end up in trending.

SwanOfThoseThings · 23/04/2025 16:49

I can't see it Sad

NotMilanese · 23/04/2025 17:26

Not a fan. To me it also seems like artificially directing traffic to certain threads...

Seeyouincourtkeithyoutwat · 23/04/2025 17:43

Not a fan either I want to pick and choose my topics I don't need to be directed

Ifeelabitsick · 26/04/2025 16:17

I think this is the stupidest and most try hard thing I've seen this site do.

If you want more engagement, let people use adblockers again.

MrsMitford3 · 26/04/2025 17:26

Have you given up already? Didn't see one yesterday or today?

Hobnobswantshernameback · 26/04/2025 19:01

Oooh look have something pink and sparkly
ffs

daisychain01 · 30/04/2025 11:06

We're adults, we don't need it highlighted to go to an already popular thread - based on early engagement. What's the actual point, it will already be in trending, why make it pink.

and pink, [sigh] whatever next.

comoletely agree about lifting the adblocker ban.
