Dear MNHQ please either moderate autism/disability posts or allow us to hide posters!

Every time a thread is posted in one of the main boards about autism or disability posts, certain posters will come on posting ignorant rubbish, are unable to take on lived experiences and post really offensive crap about the children and parents.

MN has been slack at responding to these for years now. I know this has cropped up several times in my 15 years here.

I know offending people isn’t the worst thing in the world, but if you’re not going to moderate the ableist posts could you at least allow us to hide posters to make our lives just a smidge more pleasant?

We need to be able to block people but MN is really shitty about that and uses the excuse that namechanging gets around it. You'll probably just be told to hide entire threads.

ValleyClouds · 11/04/2025 20:42

I feel like I hide disability bashing threads on a daily basis, MN have known it’s a problem and done precisely fuck all for over a decade

gamerchick · 11/04/2025 20:45

Personally I think getting rid of the ability to name change would solve a lot of the issues.

SpringIsSpringing25 · 11/04/2025 20:46

Being able to just tell them to fuck off would be a start!!

I name change every week because someone MN stalked me several years ago. It would be a pity to throw this out because it makes MNing possible for people who like their privacy.

Just upping the moderating like we’ve been asking for would be a start.

That’s not what OP means and you know it!

Frozenpeace · 11/04/2025 20:53

I'll agree with this when posts that are derogatory about fat people, working class people, benefits claimants and men (etc) are also heavily policed. But when I have reported ghastly comments about fat people etc nothing happens

ValleyClouds · 11/04/2025 20:53

@gamerchick I can’t agree with you on usernames. I have a default name and I use this name mostly just for posts about my disabilities because combined I’d be too easy to identify! I also like that I can post under my main name and no one knows I’m disabled because they aren’t linked, it’s better for me because of all the casual hate

That’s not the thread I’ve come from.

I agree about echo chambers, but there’s a difference between hearing other opinions and hearing vile and untrue things aimed at you and your children.

At the very least, given the severe lack of moderating for years around ableist posters, let us still have our conversations and and work out differing opinions without having to read ableist shit.

Be careful i got banned for two weeks for contacting mumsnet about their ableist attitudes

Really? Would that not constitute some sort of discrimination?

I've name changed because I was also mumsnet stalked well mocked every time I was on certain threads, the absolute Bullshit that's allowed to stand on disability threads, no longer surprises me, it's under the guise of robust debate !

I'd love to have a block or hide function but it won't happen sadly.

I understand, but the ability to name change easily is part of the reason we've got so many trolls.

You can't have a hide poster function AND the ability to name change. They won't work together.

If you private messaged it was probably seen as harassment or something.

Nevermindthebuzzard · 11/04/2025 21:02

Totally agree. There's a couple of posters who as soon as i see their names i know that they'll be posting ableist shite. Id love to be able to block them. I'm up for a debate, what I'm not up for is being told autism doesn't exist/is exaggerated/autistic kids need to be smacked etc.

Differentstarts · 11/04/2025 21:03

IWonderWhereMySharkPantsWent · 11/04/2025 20:58

Yep they don't care it's was minutes after I sent them the email then I was suddenly banned because I had broke the rules on troll hunting months prior. So I'm guessing they didn't like what i said so went back through my history until they found something to ban me. And I wasn't even accusing the op of being a troll I said I think your full of shit because she had lied on a CV and said it was an accident and hadn't realised

Seriously?! The reason they gave you was contacting them about their ableist attitudes? That’s appalling

Sorry cross post @Differentstarts

OldCottageGreenhouse · 11/04/2025 21:08

I’m gobsmacked @Differentstartsthats absolutely disgusting and I would’ve kept on emailing until someone else reviewed it

I've name changed in the past, after being unfairly treated when I sought advice about my DS and the abuse he suffered at the hands of his DW. She prevented him seeing his DC’s too.

A combination of discussing a female being the abuser, being the mother of a son and being a MiL, was too much for many PP’s. I was treat disgracefully for defending him and PP’s accused me and him of all sorts of things that were just not true. Every time I tried to explain, my words were misconstrued.

I wanted to be able to advise my DS.

My DS died not long after.
