Dear MNHQ please either moderate autism/disability posts or allow us to hide posters!

Every time a thread is posted in one of the main boards about autism or disability posts, certain posters will come on posting ignorant rubbish, are unable to take on lived experiences and post really offensive crap about the children and parents.

MN has been slack at responding to these for years now. I know this has cropped up several times in my 15 years here.

I know offending people isn’t the worst thing in the world, but if you’re not going to moderate the ableist posts could you at least allow us to hide posters to make our lives just a smidge more pleasant?

If i suddenly vanish again you will know why

ValleyClouds · 11/04/2025 21:13

My DS died not long after

i am sorry for your loss Flowers

Be careful i got banned for two weeks for contacting mumsnet about their ableist attitudes

What on earth did you say to get banned?

User46576 · 11/04/2025 21:15

I have autism and I don’t like censorship. People with autism are sometimes idiotic too same as everyone else. I don’t think anyone who doesn’t agree with me or have a favorable viewpoint of all autistic people should be censored

ilovesooty · 11/04/2025 21:16

Differentstarts · 11/04/2025 21:03

Yep they don't care it's was minutes after I sent them the email then I was suddenly banned because I had broke the rules on troll hunting months prior. So I'm guessing they didn't like what i said so went back through my history until they found something to ban me. And I wasn't even accusing the op of being a troll I said I think your full of shit because she had lied on a CV and said it was an accident and hadn't realised

Well if you tell someone they're full of shit and someone reports it it probably would be deemed troll hunting. I don't see why it would be connected to an expression of concern about ableism.

What on earth did you say to get banned?

I won't post a screen shot as they won't approve pictures but iv looked back at sent emails and my exact words where How are you letting this run i would like to know why this exact post is ok if it was about race, religion or sexuality you would take it down but because it's discriminating on disability it's a free for all not even deleted any comments not even added a post from you lot saying about posters not being ableist. Bunch of hypochondriac, snowflakes, faking it. Do you honestly think this is OK to say to people with a congenital condition, chronic condition and disabilities. How would you feel if you got diagnosed with a brain tumour had to reduce your hours at work spend half your life in hospitals and the response was prove it just being a snowflake stop being dramatic and a hypochondriac. You clearly think this is acceptable as your allowing it on your site.

This reply has been deleted

This has been deleted by MNHQ for breaking our Talk Guidelines.

That’s not what’s going on though.

If a poster was blatantly racist you would expect their posts to be deleted.
Why are we not allowed the same respect when it comes to disability?

This has been a problem for years. No one expects an echo chamber, but thankfully this isn’t what I’m posting about.

I don’t like censorship either, but the same old names cropping up again and again posting disingenuous shite gets wearing after a while.

I’d love to be able to hide them. As it is my autism means I get over fixated about the whole issue, which isn’t fun!

I understand, but the ability to name change easily is part of the reason we've got so many trolls.

You can't have a hide poster function AND the ability to name change. They won't work together.

There's tons of ways to make it work. This place has been seriously behind the times with forum management since forever. It took them far too long to implement an edit option.

Hide the thread then. If you’re fixated it’s not going to help if you can hide the poster. People in life will say things you disagree with, even find offensive imo.

I haven’t seen any such posts though. Maybe your interpretation of them is the issue

Wow gaslighting much if you've never seen or experienced this then why are you commenting on a post about it. Disgusting comments about disabled people are on here all the time. Why do you not have a proper username 🤔

Monty27 · 12/04/2025 01:47

I use mumsnet on Android. The functions for hiding threads simply doesn't work either 😑

Tbrh · 12/04/2025 02:52

Frozenpeace · 11/04/2025 20:53

I'll agree with this when posts that are derogatory about fat people, working class people, benefits claimants and men (etc) are also heavily policed. But when I have reported ghastly comments about fat people etc nothing happens

I disagree with this, nothing is policed. The Anti-Trans and Meghan Markle bullying are two topics that are constant and out of control.

Gingerkittykat · 12/04/2025 03:39

I was shocked at the thread today/ yesterday and the attacks on autistic mother. A lot of those posts were from a poster who had problems with an autistic partner and obviously has a lot of bitterness towards all autistic person.

singlewhitetrashheap · 12/04/2025 13:53

No response from @MNHQ?

HyggeTygge · 12/04/2025 14:03

The subject of hiding posters has been done to death and it always reveals that the person asking for it doesn't really know what they are asking for.

You can't have BOTH an anonymous name-change function and a function that blocks a user (rather than one username).

If you think that's 'shitty' and an excuse then you haven't understood or don't care about affecting people who don't want to be identified between usernames.

HyggeTygge · 12/04/2025 14:07

Just upping the moderating like we’ve been asking for would be a start.

I think you would have to agree on guidelines about what is acceptable because from this thread I can't quite get a handle on what you're talking about. It could be a helpful exercise?

Some ND people find clear rules and examples helpful!

Bollocks. There is forum tech that can do things like that. They just don't want to.

CatsMagic · 12/04/2025 14:35

Agreed OP

And there’s far too many posts started on here that’s obvious bollocks designed to get posters to pile on about how awful autism is and how mothers of children should just abandon them for their own sake, or to keep their other children safe.

Not to mention the long running threads about how shit having a partner with autism is.

Plus the other stuff - the thread about breastfeeding preventing autism was just awful but that was allowed to stand under the guise of “discussion”

I try and report stuff and often get told - you can always challenge it - but why the fuck should we have too? There’s no other protected characteristic that would have such blatant discriminatory threads and posts allowed to stand.

Hoydenish · 12/04/2025 14:41

We WERE told in the past by HQ to challenge and to educate. It was a v depressing task and tbh I think lots of us just gave up.

OP yanbu.

BIWI · 12/04/2025 14:42

Using that tag doesn’t work. There’s no direct way to tag MNHQ. The only option, if you’re not satisfied with comments on a thread in Site Stuff, is to email them. ([email protected])

spicemaiden · 12/04/2025 14:44

Couldn’t agree more. I’ve been an autism mum now for twenty years - and at every turn it’s just criticism and blame. It’s a lot to carry on top of everything else
