Reposting the OP’s first post 😱

Please, Mumsnet, can you disable this. It seems to be ever increasing. It feels worse because the new app has the font larger (or is it just me)
I am scrolling pages just to see the comment.
It feels like the longer the original post, the more people see the need to re-post it. My memory ain’t that shot to shit yet. 😂

OP posts:
NoneedtoquotetheOP · 23/03/2025 13:45

Ahem ^ 😂
It drives me mad too.

TeapotTitties · 23/03/2025 13:48

Oh God, yes please disable it!

It's even worse when the opening post is like War and Peace and someone just quotes it to say "YABU" 🤦‍♀️😁

Blackcordoroys · 23/03/2025 13:50

I absolutely hate this too

if you are replying it is OBVIOUS you are replying to the op

It is highly annoying and pointless. End up scrolling for ages just to get to the 2nd post.

Sorry! 😆

saraclara · 23/03/2025 13:52

This has been mentioned SO often. @MNHQ can you respond? Is it possible (from a technology point of view) to disable the ability to quote the OP?

funinthesun19 · 23/03/2025 13:52

I must be the only one wondering why people get so worked up over this 😂. I can understand a bit of eye roll if it’s mildly annoying. But people are really REALLY annoyed by this aren’t they?

BatchCookBabe · 23/03/2025 13:57

I agree @CookingFatCat and I think it should also be extended to quoting any post that is more than 1000 characters, I get sick of people quoting a post that was only 3-4 posts/2 minutes back, and it's like 1500 characters long. I mean, just why?! They only just posted it. Angry

Yeah, and with good reason.

Flyboyblue · 23/03/2025 14:18

Doesn't bother me. I just skip reading the quoted OP.

MMAMPWGHAP · 23/03/2025 14:24

Far better to have implemented this instead of those reaction emojis.

KellyMumsnet · 24/03/2025 11:22

Morning, everyone. Thanks for your further feedback on this. We have been reading the other threads and making notes, too. We can see why this is annoying and do understand the frustration. We are looking into a solution at the moment and will update on Site Stuff when there's any concrete news.

ThriveIn2025 · 24/03/2025 11:26

I raised this within months of the quote function starting and I know others have also raise it many times. Sometimes the very first response will quote the original post 😡 I mean what posses people I do not know.

I wish MN HQ would limit the quote text so at least if people insist they want to quote the OP, it will only be a couple of lines and not the entire body, which you then have to scroll past (numerous times on some threads).

On occasion I’ve actually asked the person why they quoted it and said how annoying it can be but I don’t want to derail someone’s thread by doing that.

Or "this"

FictionalCharacter · 24/03/2025 11:33

I agree. I don’t understand why people use “quote” so often when quote means what it says. Sometimes they then say “ah sorry, didn’t mean to quote all of the OP but didn’t know how to reply”.
@KellyMumsnet good to know you’re working on this. I think it must be confusing people that there isn’t a REPLY option, and people sometimes don’t understand that Add Post actually means reply. It’s unclear. They possibly think it means “add a new post to the topic” i.e. start a new thread.

Thanks for listening. While you're looking at quoting, if there's a way to selectively quote a poster (the other forum I'm active on allows you to edit a quote so that you're only quoting the bit that's germaine to your response) that'd be great, too.

I know we get round it by cutting and pasting and bolding, but then we lose the person's username.

peachgreen · 24/03/2025 12:37

It would also be great if quoting gave you the option to select a specific portion of someone's post rather than the whole thing.

Yes - this. Especially in a long discussion, where the same post is quoted repeatedly, or where people want to respond to a reply to a quoted post.

SmoothEncounter · 25/03/2025 12:31

BIWI · 25/03/2025 15:37

Just a heads up @saraclara - using @MNHQ doesn’t tag MNHQ. (I have no idea why it doesn’t, as that would be the easiest way to communicate with them!)

I wonder why it works then - @MNHQ - ??? Because whenever I try to @ someone in and make a typo, it says 'that username does not exist.' So the fact the MNHQ one works suggests it's actually a username. If you put MNHQ into advanced search it does bring up posts under that username - although the most recent post is 2007!

I wonder where - or who - the messages go to if you @ MNHQ in - if anywhere?

Yes this is annoying. Plus I also started a thread asking for this to be done! It's annoying to many many posters

TianasBayou · 29/03/2025 01:46

The copy/paste functionality has been removed from the new “improved” app. So it’s quote the whole post or nothing.
