MN HQ, can we have it that threads open on all the OP’s posts?

Never2many · 19/03/2025 08:30

I get that posters might not want to read through several pages of replies to a thread, but there is no excuse for not reading the OP’s posts.

There is nothing more annoying than when a OP writes something, the thread moves on, there are updates, and someone comes on to the thread and and responds to the OP which is the only post they’ve read.

You could make it like e.g. terms and conditions when setting up a bank account, so that the poster has to scroll through all the pages of the OP’s post before being able to return to the main thread.

OP posts:

Hi OP

Thanks for the suggestion - we do appreciate the feedback.

We get where you're coming from, and it can definitely be frustrating when people respond without reading the full context. However, grouping all of the OP’s posts together on the thread would risk detaching their updates from the flow of the conversation. Mumsnet Talk is designed as a discussion forum, so keeping everything in context - including the OP’s contributions alongside other posters’ responses - is part of what makes the conversation feel natural and engaging.

That said, we do have the ‘See all by OP’ option, which makes it easy to catch up on everything the OP has posted without having to scroll through the entire thread. This should help if you’re looking to follow their updates specifically.

Agreed. Just click 'see all' if you want to read all the ops post first, don't make it weird

@LilyMumsnet Would it be possible to have the ability for the Op to add an update message/s to the opening post when there are major questions being answered so it doesn’t lead to a cancel the cheque scenario? These updates for the Op would show before any responses.

That’s a really excellent idea!

HebeMumsnet · 19/03/2025 09:43

Hi @Catname. That's an interesting idea - not sure if it would be possible but we'll give it some thought. In the meantime, we're always happy to update an opening post when things have changed so that it's obvious as soon as you open the thread - sometimes we'll add an edit to the title, too. So do just hit the report button in cases like that. We're always happy to do that if the OP is happy too.

JaninaDuszejko · 19/03/2025 09:45

Yeah, @Catname suggestion is really good.

I'd also like it to be impossible for anyone to quote the original post. It adds nothing to the conversation and is very annoying.

Togglebullets · 19/03/2025 09:47

I honestly don't think it can get much easier than clicking on 'see all'. I think if people can't be bothered to do that then they're unlikely to contribute anything of any value whatever you do

I agree with @Never2many, but I think we all agree that it's annoying when people don't read all the updates.

I quite like @Catname idea , but I think the op could change / edit their post to much if they are loosing an argument .

Also if in the original post they forget to add a detail ( age of dc / are finance's shared ) some one will ask how old dcs are , original posters will then add it to their post .and others pile on then saying read the post idiot .

ScottBakula · 19/03/2025 09:58

@JaninaDuszejko , I definitely agree with you on that score , esp when the do it within a few minutes of the post been posted.
We read it 2 mins ago ffs ! Bugger off

ErrolTheDragon · 19/03/2025 10:04

I think most of the ideas proposed would be annoying and/or confusing tbh.
However, if technically possible, it might be helpful if there could be an indicator of how many posts by the OP there are. Both to alert people to read them before wading in, but also for the too-frequent cases where there’s a long thread with zero further input from the OP.

ScottBakula · 19/03/2025 10:17

That's a good idea @ErrolTheDragon , or at least a note saying 'this is the ops last post on this thread'
Both ideas would have to be able to update really quickly to make it work tho.

Catname · 19/03/2025 10:25

@ScottBakula What I envisaged would be a separate post to the original so there wouldn’t be the ability to change what had been said to start with.

I just see so many threads where the same question is asked of the op, and the op answers them again and again, or there is a major update and other posters pile on to say RTFT when someone responds to the opening post.

@HebeMumsnet I appreciate that the MN team can and do help, but in many cases, it’s just a case of skimming through the responses. If it is technically possible, there would have to be a limit on the number of this type of major update by the Op otherwise the thread loses meaning. Maybe like an addendum.

whatsappdoc · 19/03/2025 10:49

Aren’t these things covered by the ‘see all’ option? To see OP’s posts, select ‘see all’ for the OP and to see OP’s last post just flip. Agree ban quoting the opening post!

ScottBakula · 19/03/2025 11:43

@Catname , ah yes I see , so ideally mnhq could insert a 2nd post directly under the ops first post .
If they could do that it would help stop all the 100s of post asking the same question .

well yes, except that at the moment in the new app the OPs filtered posts show up in a window that can’t be flipped.

I rather think the tech team will be prioritising fixing that and other bugs/design flaws before considering any of the suggestions on this thread.

EmeraldRoulette · 19/03/2025 21:12

just a note that those of us STILL trapped in the unwanted "trial" can't get "see all"
to work at present. (on Site Stuff for those blissfully unaware)

flagging @HebeMumsnet in case you can help

there will be a lot more "cancel the cheque" with all this crazy going on

ErrolTheDragon · 20/03/2025 07:38

I usually use the app, but clicking a link to another thread opened it in the browser - there’s a hint how to read the OPs updates, is that new? Good idea anyway!

MN HQ, can we have it that threads open on all the OP’s posts?
