MNHQ: Our new mobile apps are out now!

Hi all,

The new version of our mobile app is now available on Android and will be available on iOS over the next couple of days. All users will be logged out when the update happens and will need to log in again to access the new app. You can continue to use the current app if your device doesn’t automatically update (some do), but we’ll be stopping support for this version at the end of the month, so we’d recommend downloading the new version from the App store.

We know this has been a long time coming for some, and we really appreciate your patience. Thank you to everyone who has been part of the beta testing group, your input has been invaluable. This is very much a first release that won’t include everything we want to include just yet. But we’re going to be making ongoing improvements, and we’ll continue listening to your feedback to shape future updates.

What’s new?
Here’s what you can look forward to in the new app:

• Nested quoting – You can now quote a post that already contains a quote—just like on the website—making it easier to keep up with discussions.
• AIBU? polls – You can now vote on AIBU? polls and even create your own.
• Thanks – Show your appreciation for helpful posts by thanking other users. You’ll also be able to see when someone thanks you!
• Edit your posts – You can now edit your posts from the app without heading to the website.
• See all posts by the OP – Android users can now filter posts to only see replies from the original poster, making it easier to follow their updates in a thread.
• Follow topics – Curate your own personalised feed by following your favourite topics, so you can easily find the discussions that matter most to you.
• More images – You can now upload more images in a single post than before, making it easier to share moments and information.
• GIFs – Sometimes words aren’t enough—now you can post GIFs to react, express yourself, or just add some fun to conversations!

What’s coming next?
We know there’s still work to do. Some features you’ve asked for aren’t in this first version, but that doesn’t mean we’re ignoring them. Here’s what we’re already working on for future updates:

• Links via emails – Email links will currently open in your browser to start with but we are investigating forcing them to open in the app.
• Dark mode – A long-requested feature! We’re working on bringing dark mode to the app for a more comfortable viewing experience, especially at night.
• More reactions – Right now, you can thank posts, but we’re planning to introduce more reaction options so they match what’s available on the website.
• Better push notifications – We’re making push notifications more useful and adding different types of alerts, so it’s easier to stay updated on the things you care about most.
• Notifications centre – We’ll be introducing a dedicated notifications hub in the app, making it easier to catch up on all your notifications in one place.
• PMs – We know many of you have asked for PMs to be included in the app. This is on our radar, but it will take some time to get right. We’ll keep you updated on our plans!

Guess so. I just don't see why we need For You myself! I don't like change and the whole new layout is much worse.

Yeah, I’ve no idea what the ‘for you’ is supposed to be, it seems to be quite a random selection of threads most of which are of absolutely no interest to me.

Is there a way to choose to revert to the old android app format?

Can we have the swipe to bookmark back please? Or at least put the bookmark button near the three dots - at the moment you need to to click at the right of the screen on an iPad, then move your finger to the other side of the screen to bookmark, which isn’t easy if you’re only using one hand to navigate as the other is holding the iPad.

good point. The list needs to be right justified in the drop-down not on the left.

I like it on the whole but i cant even see an option to flip or sort by newest. Is it a premium feature?

It’s entirely normal (not weird) to put a space after a full stop. It shouldn’t be like this.for example.

It should be like this. This is correct. I usually type with a double space due to my training.

I like the new app. It’s much better than the old app, which is now really dated.

I was part of the test group for the new app, perhaps that’s why I like it because I’ve used it for ages. The only thing I don’t like about it is the inability to PM, but hopefully that will come in time.

Someone posted a video link. This didn’t show up at all on the app, but did when I accessed via the website. Shall try to add photos.

I'm really struggling to read the new app, the old one had no issues at all. My eyes can't cope with this very bright white background, to the point I'll no longer be able to use it

Sorry I agree with a previous poster that it is too spread out. Is there a way to hide the Aibu polls on my feed - they take up a lot of space?

the pair of arrows in the top right hand corner (in the iPad version anyway) where it always was, but now need to toggle,to whichever of newest/oldest you weren’t already on

This only seems to hide the poll in the actual thread itself, but the poll is still visible on my Home Screen, unless I am missing something?

Need an option to go back up to beginning of thread from bottom but other than that it's a vast, vast improvement.

That confused me too. On iOS the first post remains whilst the rest of the posts reorganise themselves.

I can see why that might be useful for very slow threads.

as I said this morning no ability to flip OP posts.

now on tonight non-colours on posts. Op and mine. White is so bright. The blue was much more feeding baby nice and snuggled. This is like being at work.

And the other point I mentioned earlier. No way to jump across bottom of screen to different places. Stuck with add post only.

Yes, agree with this. It’s going to mean a lot of stuff gets reposted that doesn’t need to be, and it will be less clear for other readers which specific point is being responded to in a lengthy post.

I was very cross when I updated, as it had lost all my watched threads, and thrown me back to a username I had changed months ago. It took me ages to find all my watched threads.

@AmeliaPMumsnet I think you’ve misunderstood me, I know how to do it, I was commenting on how unwieldy it is compared to the previous swipe- my hand has to move right across the screen and it feels clunky.

hello, i updated to the new app and i have found a glitch. if a thread i am watching gets deleted, i cannot removed it from my watch list. it comes up with a ‘forbidden’ pop up.

Mine is massive, I can only see one post at a time.

I only just realised from another thread that this is the test app. That I'm in a test group. I didn't know this. This wasn't made clear. Disgraceful. Please remove me. I dint like the new app. It's unusable. More importantly no one asked me. How dare you. No one made it clear it's an option.

I just woke up to the old app not working. So had to download the new, unaware of what I was signing up to unknowingly.
