MNHQ: Our new mobile apps are out now!

AmeliaPMumsnet · 12/03/2025 10:13

Hi all,

The new version of our mobile app is now available on Android and will be available on iOS over the next couple of days. All users will be logged out when the update happens and will need to log in again to access the new app. You can continue to use the current app if your device doesn’t automatically update (some do), but we’ll be stopping support for this version at the end of the month, so we’d recommend downloading the new version from the App store.

We know this has been a long time coming for some, and we really appreciate your patience. Thank you to everyone who has been part of the beta testing group, your input has been invaluable. This is very much a first release that won’t include everything we want to include just yet. But we’re going to be making ongoing improvements, and we’ll continue listening to your feedback to shape future updates.

What’s new?
Here’s what you can look forward to in the new app:

  • Nested quoting – You can now quote a post that already contains a quote—just like on the website—making it easier to keep up with discussions.
  • AIBU? polls – You can now vote on AIBU? polls and even create your own.
  • Thanks – Show your appreciation for helpful posts by thanking other users. You’ll also be able to see when someone thanks you!
  • Edit your posts – You can now edit your posts from the app without heading to the website.
  • See all posts by the OP – Android users can now filter posts to only see replies from the original poster, making it easier to follow their updates in a thread.
  • Follow topics – Curate your own personalised feed by following your favourite topics, so you can easily find the discussions that matter most to you.
  • More images – You can now upload more images in a single post than before, making it easier to share moments and information.
  • GIFs – Sometimes words aren’t enough—now you can post GIFs to react, express yourself, or just add some fun to conversations!

What’s coming next?
We know there’s still work to do. Some features you’ve asked for aren’t in this first version, but that doesn’t mean we’re ignoring them. Here’s what we’re already working on for future updates:

  • Links via emails – Email links will currently open in your browser to start with but we are investigating forcing them to open in the app.
  • Dark mode – A long-requested feature! We’re working on bringing dark mode to the app for a more comfortable viewing experience, especially at night.
  • More reactions – Right now, you can thank posts, but we’re planning to introduce more reaction options so they match what’s available on the website.
  • Better push notifications – We’re making push notifications more useful and adding different types of alerts, so it’s easier to stay updated on the things you care about most.
  • Notifications centre – We’ll be introducing a dedicated notifications hub in the app, making it easier to catch up on all your notifications in one place.
  • PMs – We know many of you have asked for PMs to be included in the app. This is on our radar, but it will take some time to get right. We’ll keep you updated on our plans!

Let us know what you think - your input really helps to fix any initial glitches and help us keep improving. And thanks again for sticking with us - we can’t wait for you to try the new app! 💜

I think some people are missing the fact that when you flip , it is correct, but because it still has the original post at the top it looks initially like you are back at the start - it seems incessant too to have the ‘newest post’ to click when flipping- if you are flipping it’s pretty obvious you are doing so for ‘newest posts’

MrTiddlesTheCat · 13/03/2025 09:23

Links to other sites won't open. I get an error messages and some guff about security.

Here you go. Doesn't matter where the link is going, I get this message every time.

oh…this is bad…I often want to copy and paste just a small part of a post rather than quoting the whole thing if it’s long. I don’t seem to be able to select text and c&p it (except in the post I’m currently writing of course).
And also can’t select a word and use the normal look up/search web/translate tools. That’s a significant loss of functionality IMO.

Edited

Yes I can’t copy and paste parts of a post either. Really annoying

yes I have now realised this

preferred the swipe to quote mind you. So much quicker

WitchDancer · 13/03/2025 11:22

I’m finding it annoying when I sort it into just the OP’s posts, you can’t bookmark where you got to any more. That’s a feature I used to use a lot.

I’m still getting to grips with the rest of the changes, but it’s good to see there is now a vote option on AIBU.

scaredysquiggle · 13/03/2025 12:48

Hate the new look and feel. I will be using it a lot less

AmeliaPMumsnet · 13/03/2025 13:25

Hi all,

We're working through all of your messages and feedback now, so I'll respond bit by bit to make sure I cover everything.

@ErrolTheDragon Thanks so much for the screenshots and for walking us through this. Just to confirm—when you close the keyboard using the keyboard button, are you then unable to open the reply box again by tapping on it? The reply box is designed to be dragged down to close. In the meantime, you could try collapsing it this way while we look into the issue 🙏

@PotterHead1985 Thanks for sharing screenshots of the issue. This looks quite sporadic. Could you let me know what device you're using and whether your text size is set larger than the default in your device settings? That will help us investigate further. Also, could you try deleting and reinstalling the app to see if that makes a difference?

@giveupmengetacat Would you be able to share which device you're using and, if you're comfortable, send a screen recording of this happening? If so, please email it to [email protected]—that would be really helpful!

I am finding the lack of the old flip really really irritating

Yes, I also far prefer the old flip which just did it! Please consider reinstating this Mumsnet gurus! (I also personally preferred the old colour scheme of purple background. I get they probably want to tie the app in with the website but I find it harder to read when all the background is white and it feels more boring. First world problems 😂).

Equally I'm grateful as a android user to finally be able to edit and to see all OP posts, it's been a long time coming!

nahthatsnotforme · 13/03/2025 14:06

The flip thing is a bit bonkers. Why would you flip and then choose the option that is the same as before you decided to flip 🤪

AmeliaPMumsnet · 13/03/2025 14:24

Hi @lakecomomo If you're viewing a list of threads (like Active or a topic), you can hide a thread by selecting the three dots next to the title and choosing 'Hide' from the menu. You can also hide a thread while viewing it by selecting the three dots on the OP post and then choosing 'Hide'.

@renomeno The only way to change the text size right now is through your device settings. It's helpful to know you find it too large. Could you please let us know what device you're using?

@Piggywaspushed The thread list you’re referring to wasn’t the main screen before, but you can access it from the majority of screens by selecting 'I'm On' in the bottom navigation bar. You can flip a thread by selecting the icon in the top right corner with two arrows pointing up and down.

@TianasBayou Thanks for the feedback. We're tracking everything and will action as much as possible. You can turn off post previews by toggling the setting at the bottom of the preview screen or in Talk Settings under 'Post previews'.

I’m wondering this. Now it’s more clicks than necessary!

For me, I've now lost all the threads I was watching as they're in a weird order now :(

Infact scrap this it's not to do with the order I dont think, all of the recent threads I was following have disappeared :(

TianasBayou · 13/03/2025 15:36

Can you please reinstate the swipe to bookmark?

Because I obviously can’t see the old layout, I may be misremembering but wasn’t there a button bottom left on a thread to return to Active/I’m on. My left thumb seems to think there was! My right index finger does not want the effort of heading to top left to click Active. Honestly did anyone who used the app actually test this?

Yes, I was just going to say exactly the same.

As someone has noted, the flip isn’t working - and it was better as it was in the old app just flipping straight away, if the only options (when they’re working) is oldest/newest then they’re an unecessary extra step.

Yy to this. One press is all that's needed.

Sorry HQ but that isn't better - you used to just swipe across form active and actually mine did stay on Threads I'm On on my phone I shouldn't have to keep navigating to 'I'm On'. I also don't want all this 'For You' nonsense...

Yep, I want the purple back too , and the more streamlined look of the old App. It's so cluttered now..

Yes, I was just going to say exactly the same.

The post by @TianasBayouwas edited after my comment. But I was specifically referring to the swipe to bookmark. It feels very fiddly to have to click on the post to bookmark. I keep swiping and then nothing happens!

JustCleaningtheBBQ · 13/03/2025 16:26

There is no longer an option to flip when you have selected to read just the OPs posts. I’m following a thread with over 100 posts from the OP and have to scroll through them all every time I want to read an update. Please bring this back

ImperfectAlf · 13/03/2025 16:47

How do I get the colours back, please?

Mumsnet person name used to be blue but now it’s the op.
the op used to be on coloured background….the white is distracting.

I’ve tried looking at settings… obviously it’s something I’m doing wrong, because you wouldn’t have done that deliberately

edited to say that my posts are not in colour either.

Piggywaspushed · 13/03/2025 16:59

No matter what you mclaim, HQ, I'm On used to be a main option at the top, as was watching. This has been replaced by For You (eh?) and Following...what even is that??

Which version of the app? On iPad and iPhone, the toolbar with I’m on etc was at the bottom and looked much like the new one until very recently when an iOS change apparently caused it to move to the top and the Reply or new thread button on it stopped workingConfused

Piggywaspushed · 13/03/2025 17:17

Android.

Just came on to say this! Could we just have the arrows flip the thread automatically as before? Totally unnecessary (and annoying!) to have an extra step of selecting oldest/newest. A governing principle of good web/app design is to minimise the number of clicks (or taps!) to get from A to B.

I’m also very keen that dark mode roll out soon, and/or the old option of selecting the background colour for the app is reinstated. Really don’t like it in white. It’s too bright and makes it feel less like an app and more like I’m scrolling on a browser.

Using the IoS version on Apple iPhone.

ErrolTheDragon · 13/03/2025 17:27

Piggywaspushed · 13/03/2025 17:17

Android.

Hm…on iPad having chosen I’m on or Watching it stays there, and the tabs for Following/trending/for you only appear at the top if I’m on Active, which doesn’t seem too unreasonable (following might possibly be useful even if the others aren’t)
