MNHQ: Our new mobile apps are out now!

Hi all,

The new version of our mobile app is now available on Android and will be available on iOS over the next couple of days. All users will be logged out when the update happens and will need to log in again to access the new app. You can continue to use the current app if your device doesn’t automatically update (some do), but we’ll be stopping support for this version at the end of the month, so we’d recommend downloading the new version from the App store.

We know this has been a long time coming for some, and we really appreciate your patience. Thank you to everyone who has been part of the beta testing group, your input has been invaluable. This is very much a first release that won’t include everything we want to include just yet. But we’re going to be making ongoing improvements, and we’ll continue listening to your feedback to shape future updates.

What’s new?
Here’s what you can look forward to in the new app:

  • Nested quoting – You can now quote a post that already contains a quote—just like on the website—making it easier to keep up with discussions.
  • AIBU? polls – You can now vote on AIBU? polls and even create your own.
  • Thanks – Show your appreciation for helpful posts by thanking other users. You’ll also be able to see when someone thanks you!
  • Edit your posts – You can now edit your posts from the app without heading to the website.
  • See all posts by the OP – Android users can now filter posts to only see replies from the original poster, making it easier to follow their updates in a thread.
  • Follow topics – Curate your own personalised feed by following your favourite topics, so you can easily find the discussions that matter most to you.
  • More images – You can now upload more images in a single post than before, making it easier to share moments and information.
  • GIFs – Sometimes words aren’t enough—now you can post GIFs to react, express yourself, or just add some fun to conversations!

What’s coming next?
We know there’s still work to do. Some features you’ve asked for aren’t in this first version, but that doesn’t mean we’re ignoring them. Here’s what we’re already working on for future updates:

  • Links via emails – Email links will currently open in your browser to start with but we are investigating forcing them to open in the app.
  • Dark mode – A long-requested feature! We’re working on bringing dark mode to the app for a more comfortable viewing experience, especially at night.
  • More reactions – Right now, you can thank posts, but we’re planning to introduce more reaction options so they match what’s available on the website.
  • Better push notifications – We’re making push notifications more useful and adding different types of alerts, so it’s easier to stay updated on the things you care about most.
  • Notifications centre – We’ll be introducing a dedicated notifications hub in the app, making it easier to catch up on all your notifications in one place.
  • PMs – We know many of you have asked for PMs to be included in the app. This is on our radar, but it will take some time to get right. We’ll keep you updated on our plans!

Let us know what you think - your input really helps to fix any initial glitches and help us keep improving. And thanks again for sticking with us - we can’t wait for you to try the new app! 💜

It's not a bug. A one off user. This is the biggest change / upgrade mn has ever had, with no forewarning, and has affected every single user. And is mostly shite and most users hate a lot of it.

There’s a mix of problems.
some poor design.
some bugs affecting everyone or most users .
and some things which are dependent on settings, exact device, something unusual etc - they’re the sorts of things where a recording may be useful. The problem ApolloAndDaphne is having not being able to comment at all in the new app clearly isn’t happening to everyone. Nor is the oddness with @ quoting which seems to have been narrowed down to some particular android device.

Completely agree. And no reply as to why hands cannot be held up and it revoked.

change is fine. So long as it’s for better.

this is just so so slow and clunky.

perhaps MN just wants to get rid of some of us

Any update on the bookmark issue for Android?

I've also noticed that text formatting like bold and italic isn't showing up on the app. Gets confusing when someone has quoted something by bolding it instead of using the quote feature, as it all looks the same.

Yes so instead of having to tap twice to book mark. With the three dots. Can we just have a book mark tap next to the date? So only one click needed.

Also if you comment it taked you to tbe bottom of the page and you lose your page. The iOS app keeps crashing too and freezes.

{mention:ErrolTheDragon}its@ErrolTheDragonits my particular android device that is having problems with the @ tagging people and inserting "mention". I'm on a Huawei Android mobile phone and I'm sure I'm not the only person this is happening to. I never had a problem with the old app!

Just to make sure I’m following correctly—are you referring to the bookmark issue you flagged previously, where you aren’t taken to the post you’ve bookmarked? If so, we’re aware of this and are looking into it. We’ll let you know as soon as we have any updates.

Regarding the issue you mentioned with text formatting (bold, italics, etc.) not showing up, we haven’t been able to reproduce this on our side. Could you share a link to a thread or post where you’ve seen this issue so we can take a look?

Thanks for sharing more details about your bookmark feedback. We’ve heard similar reports from other users, and we’re going to look into it.

I also noticed you mentioned that the app is crashing and freezing for you. To help us investigate, could you share the following details?

  • The model of your device
  • The iOS version your device is running (you can find this in Settings under "About")
  • If the issue happens consistently, could you describe what you were doing just before the app froze or crashed?
  • If you’re comfortable, could you also share a screen recording of the issue via email at [email protected]?

Thanks for your patience. This seems to be a specific issue affecting only certain Android devices, which makes it tricky to pin down. We’ll keep you updated if we have any news on a fix.

Also the x to close a picture is often the same colour as the picture and therefore difficult to find.

Problem seems to be the type of link. Eg this post. The first link goes to rhe error message, the second works, despite both being to the same webpage.

It does when I get the list of names on my iPad though not after applying the filter.

And the copying of text? That would still be handy.

I find that sometimes when I flip a thread, I get to the latest post, which is why I do it, but sometimes I stay at the place I arrived at, ie the last post I had looked at before, it’s just the posts are ordered differently.

Good morning everyone,

We’ve just released an update to the app on both iOS and Android. Just a heads-up - it might take a little time for your device to register the update and automatically install it. If you want it sooner or don't have automatic updates then you'll need to manually update via the app store.

Here’s what’s new in this update:

  • OP post filtering: When filtering posts by a specific user, you can now flip the order of the posts. This was a feature in the old version that many of you missed, so we’ve brought it back.
  • Alternative menu access: We know from your feedback it can be a bit fiddly to tap the three dots on each thread or post. Now, if you press and hold on a thread or post, the menu pops up for you. We added this as a temporary solution after removing the swipe option - the swipe action is more complicated but we are looking in to how to reinstate it.
  • Text size tweaks: We’ve adjusted the text size across the app to better align with other popular apps. This means that if you have larger text set on your device, our app should now feel much more comfortable and consistent with what you’re used to.

We want to reassure you that we’re working through all of your feedback and making changes as quickly as we can. That said, we can only tackle so much at once and some things aren't as simple as they seem, so please bear with us while we work through everything. We appreciate your patience and your input!

I’m now having problems posting - if you are writing a post the ‘comments’ box widens to accommodate your typing, but it stays thin if you paste something you’ve copied from somewhere else and it’s then also hard to move around.

And if I come out, say to check something, I can’t then go in and post my comments, or type anything else - the post button has vanished and all I see is a single line comments box.
And of course I can’t copy what I’ve typed either…

We’ve seen your feedback about the lack of automatic capitalisation when typing in the app, and we completely understand why this is frustrating - especially since it worked before.

The short version: The tool that powers text input in both the app and the website isn't handling capitalisation properly, and we know that’s not great. Fixing this isn’t as simple as flipping a switch, but we are actively looking into the best way to resolve it.

We really appreciate your patience while we work on this, and we’ll update you as soon as we have more to share.
