MNHQ: Our new mobile apps are out now!

AmeliaPMumsnet · 12/03/2025 10:13

Hi all,

The new version of our mobile app is now available on Android and will be available on iOS over the next couple of days. All users will be logged out when the update happens and will need to log in again to access the new app. You can continue to use the current app if your device doesn’t automatically update (some do), but we’ll be stopping support for this version at the end of the month, so we’d recommend downloading the new version from the App store.

We know this has been a long time coming for some, and we really appreciate your patience. Thank you to everyone who has been part of the beta testing group, your input has been invaluable. This is very much a first release that won’t include everything we want to include just yet. But we’re going to be making ongoing improvements, and we’ll continue listening to your feedback to shape future updates.

What’s new?
Here’s what you can look forward to in the new app:

  • Nested quoting – You can now quote a post that already contains a quote—just like on the website—making it easier to keep up with discussions.
  • AIBU? polls – You can now vote on AIBU? polls and even create your own.
  • Thanks – Show your appreciation for helpful posts by thanking other users. You’ll also be able to see when someone thanks you!
  • Edit your posts – You can now edit your posts from the app without heading to the website.
  • See all posts by the OP – Android users can now filter posts to only see replies from the original poster, making it easier to follow their updates in a thread.
  • Follow topics – Curate your own personalised feed by following your favourite topics, so you can easily find the discussions that matter most to you.
  • More images – You can now upload more images in a single post than before, making it easier to share moments and information.
  • GIFs – Sometimes words aren’t enough—now you can post GIFs to react, express yourself, or just add some fun to conversations!

What’s coming next?
We know there’s still work to do. Some features you’ve asked for aren’t in this first version, but that doesn’t mean we’re ignoring them. Here’s what we’re already working on for future updates:

  • Links via emails – Email links will currently open in your browser to start with but we are investigating forcing them to open in the app.
  • Dark mode – A long-requested feature! We’re working on bringing dark mode to the app for a more comfortable viewing experience, especially at night.
  • More reactions – Right now, you can thank posts, but we’re planning to introduce more reaction options so they match what’s available on the website.
  • Better push notifications – We’re making push notifications more useful and adding different types of alerts, so it’s easier to stay updated on the things you care about most.
  • Notifications centre – We’ll be introducing a dedicated notifications hub in the app, making it easier to catch up on all your notifications in one place.
  • PMs – We know many of you have asked for PMs to be included in the app. This is on our radar, but it will take some time to get right. We’ll keep you updated on our plans!

Let us know what you think - your input really helps to fix any initial glitches and help us keep improving. And thanks again for sticking with us - we can’t wait for you to try the new app! 💜

Can we have the buttons at the bottom to take us back without clicking the arrow first like it used to be?

Please !!! I like to scroll one handed.

I hate this new app. It’s so basic looking and harsh on my eyes! Awful

Yeah, it’s so white on my iPad…. Very offputting. Too much empty space - you can’t speed read…

Magnolia82 · 24/03/2025 07:56

I’ve lost track of whether this has already been mentioned… the new app doesn’t let me open links from one thread to another thread. It sends me to the website. This is quite frustrating - if someone links a new thread in a thread I’m currently on, I’m not able to just click the link, but have to manually search for it (which is also not as straight forward as I’m sure it could be).

I appreciate that there seems to be a lot of work for Mumsnet in fixing all these problems over the last week, but as others have mentioned, it seems strange that many of the problems are things that worked fine on the old app? Usually an update to an app keeps all of the good things of an old app and then just adds any improvements.

ErrolTheDragon · 23/03/2025 15:53

That’s odd, I’m on an iPad and posting, whether via quote or as a new post is working fine (except for an odd glitch I’ve mentioned if I use the keyboard symbol to collapse the posting window instead of using the pulldown ‘handle’ at the top). Presumably your iOS is up to date (18.3.2)?

iOS all up to date. I just can't click into the comment box. It is very odd. I am typing this on desktop on my iPad but the app just isn't working for me.

Thirded, there are a lot more steps involved than before

previous app was more ergonomic

Tallisker · 24/03/2025 10:07

In addition to Magnolia’s post about links to other threads going to the website from the app, links to The Times and The Telegraph for example now only go to the main websites, even though I am a subscriber and have both apps on my phone. The old app links gave me the option to open them in the papers’ apps. iPhone 15, most recent iOS.

Yes I find all that annoying too.

And a quick niggle ! Does anyone else find that when they post a comment they are immediately flung back to the beginning of a thread?
I have to come out and go back in to get back to where I was!

Hi. Could I check whether you have the thread flipped, which might be causing you to be taken back to the start after posting? If that’s not the case, is this happening on every thread, or only on certain ones?

Can we have a bookmark on the main post? I keep mixing up my thanks and bookmarks.

Would you be able to explain a little more what you mean by this so we can understand what's going on for you? Thank you!

I feel like a broken record but I still can't type a reply on the app on my iPad. I've deleted the app and reinstalled and I have signed out and signed in again. Still no joy.

I’m sorry this is happening. Would you be able to take a screen recording of what happens when you try to reply on your iPad and send it to us at [email protected]? If you could record from the moment you open the app until the reply doesn’t work, that would be incredibly helpful, as it will help us recreate the issue. Thank you!

@AmeliaPMumsnetno I don’t use flip because it’s too complicated for me!!😳 just bookmark, it has happened on almost all the threads I’m on .

Tallisker and others — thanks for flagging the issues with opening links. We’re looking into it.

For instances where you’re taken to websites like The Times or The Telegraph, you should see an option (either at the top or bottom of the screen) to open the link in your default browser instead. This should take you to your browser, where (depending on your device and settings) you can choose to open the link in the corresponding app or view it directly in your browser — where you may already be logged in.

I appreciate this isn’t a solution, but it might help while we investigate. Thanks for your patience!

Thanks for this, it's super useful.

Apologies as I know this is frustrating but would you be able to take a screen recording of this happening and send it to us at [email protected]? That'll help us look into it as we aren't able to recreate it on our side. Would you also be able to share with me what kind of device you're using?

JellyBeanSpring25 · 24/03/2025 12:36

@AmeliaPMumsnet the same when clicking on a link to another thread, it takes you outside the App to the website rather than to the thread on the App.

ApolloandDaphne · 24/03/2025 13:09

@AmeliaPMumsnet I have emailed you a video of what happens when i try to respond using the app on my iPad.

Resilience · 24/03/2025 14:44

Had a few posts now where the app has frozen mid reply and then when it unfreezes it has completely lost my reply.

iOS all up to date. I just can't click into the comment box. It is very odd. I am typing this on desktop on my iPad but the app just isn't working for me.

I fins the comment box becomes unresponsive like that if I’ve started to reply, want to check back on the thread and use the hide keyboard key in the bottom left rather than the little dragdown bar at the top. Possibly this is a related phenomenon.

Had a few posts now where the app has frozen mid reply and then when it unfreezes it has completely lost my reply.

Could you please try quitting the app completely and opening it again from scratch and seeing if this issue persists? We pushed out a minor update early this afternoon, and restarting the app should ensure the update was properly received.

If the freezing keeps happening, could you let me know what device you're using? And if it’s persistent and you feel comfortable doing so, could you send us a screen recording of it happening to [email protected]? Thank you!

I don’t understand how no one at MN can use a device to see what is happening whenever anything goes wrong?

PotterHead1985 · 12/03/2025 19:57

So I don't wanna log out to show the log in. But here's a couple instances where the words are cut off. And the time of posting.

Hi @PotterHead1985, I'm just looking into this some more. Could you please let me know what you have your font style set to in your device settings? Thank you!

I agree @JaneJeffer, surely mnhq with its huge profits can afford to buy an iPhone and a couple of other phones Samsung etc, and look up said issues.

sometimes bugs can depend on users’ settings, locales, model of device etc.

Oh come on @ErrolTheDragon
It's not a bug. A one off user. This is the biggest change / upgrade mn has ever had, with no forewarning, and has affected every single user. And is mostly shite and most users hate a lot of it.
