MNHQ: Our new mobile apps are out now!

AmeliaPMumsnet · 12/03/2025 10:13

Hi all,

The new version of our mobile app is now available on Android and will be available on iOS over the next couple of days. All users will be logged out when the update happens and will need to log in again to access the new app. You can continue to use the current app if your device doesn’t automatically update (some do), but we’ll be stopping support for this version at the end of the month, so we’d recommend downloading the new version from the App store.

We know this has been a long time coming for some, and we really appreciate your patience. Thank you to everyone who has been part of the beta testing group, your input has been invaluable. This is very much a first release that won’t include everything we want to include just yet. But we’re going to be making ongoing improvements, and we’ll continue listening to your feedback to shape future updates.

What’s new?
Here’s what you can look forward to in the new app:

  • Nested quoting – You can now quote a post that already contains a quote—just like on the website—making it easier to keep up with discussions.
  • AIBU? polls – You can now vote on AIBU? polls and even create your own.
  • Thanks – Show your appreciation for helpful posts by thanking other users. You’ll also be able to see when someone thanks you!
  • Edit your posts – You can now edit your posts from the app without heading to the website.
  • See all posts by the OP – Android users can now filter posts to only see replies from the original poster, making it easier to follow their updates in a thread.
  • Follow topics – Curate your own personalised feed by following your favourite topics, so you can easily find the discussions that matter most to you.
  • More images – You can now upload more images in a single post than before, making it easier to share moments and information.
  • GIFs – Sometimes words aren’t enough—now you can post GIFs to react, express yourself, or just add some fun to conversations!

What’s coming next?
We know there’s still work to do. Some features you’ve asked for aren’t in this first version, but that doesn’t mean we’re ignoring them. Here’s what we’re already working on for future updates:

  • Links via emails – Email links will currently open in your browser to start with but we are investigating forcing them to open in the app.
  • Dark mode – A long-requested feature! We’re working on bringing dark mode to the app for a more comfortable viewing experience, especially at night.
  • More reactions – Right now, you can thank posts, but we’re planning to introduce more reaction options so they match what’s available on the website.
  • Better push notifications – We’re making push notifications more useful and adding different types of alerts, so it’s easier to stay updated on the things you care about most.
  • Notifications centre – We’ll be introducing a dedicated notifications hub in the app, making it easier to catch up on all your notifications in one place.
  • PMs – We know many of you have asked for PMs to be included in the app. This is on our radar, but it will take some time to get right. We’ll keep you updated on our plans!

Let us know what you think - your input really helps to fix any initial glitches and help us keep improving. And thanks again for sticking with us - we can’t wait for you to try the new app! 💜

I now have the one step flip. Thank you for fixing it.
I’m on an iPhone.
Please bring back the capital letter after a full stop when you go on to the next line.

TianasBayou · 20/03/2025 08:22

Have updated and got the one step flip. However the OP is still there is full.

and please sort out the capitalisation and reinstate the OP flip. And the bookmark swipe <hard to please>

not bothered about the white background as I don’t have brightness turned up to max.

drspouse · 20/03/2025 08:47

Can someone explain bookmarks to me?
I tried to make one and come back to it on the new app but couldn't work out what I had to do.
Alternatively, can we just have "go to first new post" by default on the app like on a browser.

PoppySeedBagelRedux · 20/03/2025 08:58

I still don’t go to the newest post when I flip, I just get where I’d bookmark but the posts are flipped.

giveupmengetacat · 20/03/2025 09:00

Bookmarks still aren't working me I'm afraid.

I used the app on my lenovo tablet last night for the first time. Bookmarking is cumbersome. It used to just be a little icon to press. Now you have to select the 3 dots (which are tiny and sometimes I end up not pressing them properly), but then the options appear up from the bottom of the screen, meaning if I was using my tablet one handed it's quite difficult. Idk if I'm explaining that well but I think someone else mentioned it too.

Edit: this is the same on my phone too, but I don't notice it as much, becuase the device is smaller.

That sounds right though? The bookmark is supposed to keep your place.

Blondeshavemorefun · 20/03/2025 10:20

I’ve had this a few times. When wanting to read op posts /updates but thread is full. It whirls then says this @BeckyAMumsnet @AmeliaPMumsnet

But only when full. Fine other times

@AmeliaPMumsnetany news on if a fix is being worked on to be able to remove threads from watched once they have been deleted? Ive got 2 threads now that were removed, in my watchlist that I cannot unwatch nor hide. I imagine eventually this list will just keep growing so would love a way to remove them, you used to be able to swipe and unwatch even after they were deleted but now they are stuck on my list.

Hi @perihelpneeded,

Apologies for the delay in getting back to you. We're just wrapping up some testing on Android now that will allow us to release an update to resolve the issue you're experiencing with deleted threads in your watching list. Once the update is live, you'll be able to remove these deleted threads. We'll let you know as soon as it's available.

But you do that anyway don’t you?

I used to be able to get to the newest by flipping on very fast running threads. And then bookmarked the most recent and went back a couple of screens to get an update without having to read all posts since I’d last bookmarked.

I think we must use the app differently, I've never used flip, I just bookmark the last post I read, then when I return to it I can continue reading from there.

nahthatsnotforme · 20/03/2025 14:31

Maybe an obvious answer, but what is ‘For you’ for? It isn’t just my preferred topics, which would be handy. Just a random mix

giveupmengetacat · 20/03/2025 14:34

I give up, I keep trying to reply but even that isn't working properly!

When opening Blondes' image above I was unable to press the back button to return to the thread (it was there but wouldn't work), so I had to close the app instead.

It's such a shame because I used to spent a lot of time on here and I find now it's just such an unpleasant experience. It's clunky, everything is too big and in your face. I tried responding about three times (I originally was trying to quote Blondes) and the pop up to type a reply just kept disappearing. Then each time I returned to the thread I have to scroll for ages because bookmarks still aren't working!!!

I’m curious too - mine seems to be a list of threads selected on the basis of being ones I wouldn’t be interested in.

I can’t see the difference between Active / Trending / For You. Seems to be the same list of (neverending now) threads.

I give up. On the bright side, I suppose this has cured me of my mumsnet addiction. I think I'll come back to it in a couple of weeks and hope things have been sorted out. How I wish they'd just left the old app as it was!

The old app was broken on the iPad apparently due to something apple changed, I wondered if this had caused mn to release the new app a bit sooner than they might otherwise have done.

deeahgwitch · 20/03/2025 15:45

You used to be able to view the OP’s posts only and you could flip from the OP’s newest or original post. That feature is gone now.
Why ?
Can I mention the capital letter fiasco also.

AmeliaPMumsnet · 20/03/2025 16:40

Hi all,

I’m working through some of your messages now and will respond shortly.

We’ve just pushed an update on iOS (only, for now) that includes another change to flip: the OP’s post will now be truncated when you flip a thread, which should make it easier to navigate. You may need to quit the app completely and open it again for this change to come into effect.

We’re working on bringing all the updates released on iOS to Android as soon as possible and hope to release them imminently.

Thanks again for your patience while we work through everything.

Hi @giveupmengetacat,

Thank you for your feedback on bookmarks and opening the menu on your tablet — this is really useful context, and we’ll take it away and see what we can do. Would you be able to take a screen recording of the issues you’re having with replying and closing images and send it to [email protected]? This would be a huge help as we investigate.

Thanks. I’m seeing the collapsed OP post, which is good except I don’t think the logic of when it’s collapsed vs open is quite right. I think it should be open when the posts are oldest first, and collapsed when its newest first. I’m seeing it the other way round, I’m not sure if that’s because of which way I had the thread when I last looked at it or because of my settings.

AmeliaPMumsnet · 20/03/2025 17:13

Hi @Queenanne20,

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you on this! We’ve been trying to recreate the issue with mentions, and we’ve only just managed to see it ourselves today. I can imagine how frustrating this must be for you. We’re looking into whether there’s anything we can do on our end, but it seems like this might be a very specific bug affecting certain Android devices, which could be outside our control. That said, we’ll do our best to find a solution and we are looking in to it!

Hi @ErrolTheDragon,

We've made it so the OP post is truncated when the thread is set to the opposite of your default sorting. So, if your default is 'Oldest first', the OP will be truncated when you switch to 'Newest first', and vice versa.

We did this so that users who usually view threads* *'Newest first' don’t have to expand the OP every time — especially if they haven’t read the thread before.

Hope that makes sense, but let us know if you have any questions, thoughts, or feedback.

{mention:AmeliaPMumsnet}{mention:AmeliaPMumsnet}thanks@AmeliaPMumsnetthanks for the reply. Yes, it's really frustrating but I appreciate you are trying to sort it out. I know I've said it before, but it never happened on the previous app and I've been on mumsnet at least 10 years. Also, sometimes when I'm commenting on a thread and it gives you the option to preview before posting and then I choose to edit, the whole reply I've been typing just disappears. Sorry to give you more problems!

It seems counterintuitive to me.
But now the single click flip and collapse OP is there I think I’m going to put my settings to oldest first anyway so it won’t bother me.

The only difference I can see is the For You column has annoying Sponsored ads after every fifth or sixth post.
