MNHQ: Our new mobile apps are out now!

AmeliaPMumsnet · 12/03/2025 10:13

Hi all,

The new version of our mobile app is now available on Android and will be available on iOS over the next couple of days. All users will be logged out when the update happens and will need to log in again to access the new app. You can continue to use the current app if your device doesn’t automatically update (some do), but we’ll be stopping support for this version at the end of the month, so we’d recommend downloading the new version from the App store.

We know this has been a long time coming for some, and we really appreciate your patience. Thank you to everyone who has been part of the beta testing group, your input has been invaluable. This is very much a first release that won’t include everything we want to include just yet. But we’re going to be making ongoing improvements, and we’ll continue listening to your feedback to shape future updates.

What’s new?
Here’s what you can look forward to in the new app:

  • Nested quoting – You can now quote a post that already contains a quote—just like on the website—making it easier to keep up with discussions.
  • AIBU? polls – You can now vote on AIBU? polls and even create your own.
  • Thanks – Show your appreciation for helpful posts by thanking other users. You’ll also be able to see when someone thanks you!
  • Edit your posts – You can now edit your posts from the app without heading to the website.
  • See all posts by the OP – Android users can now filter posts to only see replies from the original poster, making it easier to follow their updates in a thread.
  • Follow topics – Curate your own personalised feed by following your favourite topics, so you can easily find the discussions that matter most to you.
  • More images – You can now upload more images in a single post than before, making it easier to share moments and information.
  • GIFs – Sometimes words aren’t enough—now you can post GIFs to react, express yourself, or just add some fun to conversations!

What’s coming next?
We know there’s still work to do. Some features you’ve asked for aren’t in this first version, but that doesn’t mean we’re ignoring them. Here’s what we’re already working on for future updates:

  • Links via emails – Email links will currently open in your browser to start with but we are investigating forcing them to open in the app.
  • Dark mode – A long-requested feature! We’re working on bringing dark mode to the app for a more comfortable viewing experience, especially at night.
  • More reactions – Right now, you can thank posts, but we’re planning to introduce more reaction options so they match what’s available on the website.
  • Better push notifications – We’re making push notifications more useful and adding different types of alerts, so it’s easier to stay updated on the things you care about most.
  • Notifications centre – We’ll be introducing a dedicated notifications hub in the app, making it easier to catch up on all your notifications in one place.
  • PMs – We know many of you have asked for PMs to be included in the app. This is on our radar, but it will take some time to get right. We’ll keep you updated on our plans!

Let us know what you think - your input really helps to fix any initial glitches and help us keep improving. And thanks again for sticking with us - we can’t wait for you to try the new app! 💜

How much longer is this gonna take. My mn is huge, my whole phone the rest is tiny.

Thats before I even get to the horrible colour, the crap flipping, shall I go on????

MerryGrimaceShake · 18/03/2025 17:44

Thanks @AmeliaPMumsnet

Does anyone else have issues with search functions? Or am I actually the only one?

You are not the only one!

perihelpneeded · 19/03/2025 01:04

@AmeliaPMumsnetany news on if a fix is being worked on to be able to remove threads from watched once they have been deleted? Ive got 2 threads now that were removed, in my watchlist that I cannot unwatch nor hide. I imagine eventually this list will just keep growing so would love a way to remove them, you used to be able to swipe and unwatch even after they were deleted but now they are stuck on my list.

drspouse · 19/03/2025 08:18

I still want to be able to go to my last read post on threads I'm on. On a browser it's automatic. No bookmark needed.

deeahgwitch · 19/03/2025 08:25

I do like the new “preview your post before posting “ facility.
but please bring back the capital letter after a full stop.
who decided that should go ?
Utterly daft decision.

Seems unlikely it was a deliberate decision. However, I do get autocapitalisation. I’ve got the setting turned on (under general/keyboards) - I’d imagine most people do have this on though. This is on an iPad.

deeahgwitch · 19/03/2025 09:41

I have auto capitalisation on @ErrolTheDragon
I’m on an iPhone.

LegoTherapy · 19/03/2025 09:52

I’m definitely not enjoying mumsnet as much since the update. It’s not nice to use and I hate the brightness. The flipping is the worst thing though.

Odd.. it seems to be working ok on my iPhone too.

ErrolTheDragon · 19/03/2025 10:06

Oh… I’m finding it ok when I’m writing one sentence after another. Like this.
but not if I start a new line.

KatyMumsnet · 19/03/2025 10:33

Hi everyone, thanks for your patience while we take in your feedback and make improvements! We’ve just released a new version of the iOS app with the following updates:

  • Removed the extra step when flipping a thread - for now, the OP will stay open at the top, but we’re working on collapsing it so you’ll just see the title when you flip.
  • You can now remove deleted threads from your watching list.
  • Fixed an issue where threads weren’t always opening in the right spot when accessed via bookmarks, notifications, etc. This should now be more consistent, though we’re still fine-tuning it.

To get these updates, you'll need to update the app via the app store.

We’re continuing to review feedback and make changes, and will post updates here.

whatsappdoc · 19/03/2025 10:52

Great to get the one-step flip back! You are working on putting the flip back into the ‘see all’ option though? 🤔

ApolloandDaphne · 19/03/2025 12:21

Thanks for the update.

I still can't post a comment on the app on my iPad though. I've deleted and reinstalled but no change.

drspouse · 19/03/2025 12:35

Do we have to delete and reinstall to see the one click flip? I don't see an update to download.

harijes · 19/03/2025 12:48

Still no way to flip op posts?

ErrolTheDragon · 19/03/2025 13:42

As a software developer (albeit a very different sort) I’m surprised by the rapidity of delivering the initial round of fixes!

Queenanne20 · 19/03/2025 17:18

I've deleted and reinstalled the app and I still have two steps to flip. Also, I can't tag anyone without it repeating their name at least twice, mixing my typed text up with their name and inserting "mentions" and brackets into the tag. Surely I can't be the only person this is happening to?

I’ve updated and got the one step flip on my phone now, but it looks like the update isn’t yet rolled out to the iPad

Queenanne20 · 19/03/2025 17:42

{mention:ErrolTheDragon}Im@ErrolTheDragonIm on a Huawei Android mobile phone. You can see when I've tagged you the absolute pigs ear it makes of it. I've complained to mumsnet numerous times but they haven't got back to me. I never had any problems with the old app. This is ridiculous.

ErrolTheDragon · 19/03/2025 17:52

A pair of pig’s ears I’d say, @Queenanne20
presumably it’s device specific and some of the odder bugs may depend on settings too I suppose.

WarriorN · 19/03/2025 18:51

lakecomomo · 18/03/2025 17:37

Thanks @AmeliaPMumsnet

any news on the loss of swiping? I feel like it’s been overlooked

must say - swiping was great

WarriorN · 19/03/2025 18:55

Flip works better for me now.

in probably being pedantic but I’d prefer it if it automatically reset to the thread oldest first every time I go back as I can’t remember which way it’s sitting. Especially if the OP remains either way

JaneJeffer · 19/03/2025 21:58

I reloaded it but I miss being able to get back to active threads by using the options underneath.

don’t know what it is but I can’t stay on for any length of time now which is good I suppose

… ipad flipping good too now this morning👍

Magnolia82 · 20/03/2025 08:01

Thanks for the update. Bookmarks now seem to be opening in the right place - thank you.

Just to add to other comments, it would also be helpful if you could look at:
a) being able to swipe to do actions such as bookmark (as it was on the old app)
b) improving the colour

Thank you.
