New App message blocking screen!

Queenanne20 · 07/03/2025 12:02

I access mumsnet via the app. I've tried to go on today and there is a message about the new app that totally blocks the screen and I can't move it. I've deleted the app and reinstalled and the message is still completely covering the screen. I've now had to delete the app again and am accessing mumsnet via inputting the full website address on Google search. Is anyone else having this problem?

Hi @Queenanne20,

Sorry that you're having issues with the message in the app, this definitely shouldn't be happening and you should be able to dismiss it by selecting the 'Got it' button. I'm going to take a look into this with my team. I appreciate it's annoying but would there be any way you could share a screen recording of this happening with us?

Would you also be able to share with me if you're using an iOS or Android device?

Queenanne20 · 07/03/2025 12:08

I'll try and post it. There is no Got it button on there, the message covers the entire screen. Give me a few minutes as I'll have to reinstall the app, take a screenshot and then delete the app again.

Hi - I have got the same problem - on my android phone but not my ipad if that helps. When I went to reinstall the app there were no updates, got the same message
There is no option to press "Got It"

sleepwouldbenice · 07/03/2025 12:10

To be honest I am not sure there is much to share - the app just has the message?

What happens if you click the cross at the top right of the screen?

maximist · 07/03/2025 12:16

Ignore me, that's on my screen not your photo...

Queenanne20 · 07/03/2025 12:16

@AmeliaPMumsnet its an android phone. I sent you a screenshot but it says it's under review.

I got the message on my iPad. I think the simple thing is the android option doesn't have the Got it option

Thanks for sharing @Queenanne20, the screenshot was really helpful! Am I right in thinking that both of you have your font size set larger than the default, @Queenanne20 and @sleepwouldbenice? We think this is happening because the message isn't working properly with a larger font size. Not accounting for that was an oversight on our part and we're very sorry!

There is a way around this that may work for you both if you're able to navigate on your device briefly with a smaller font size. I'll share instructions below:

  1. Open the Mumsnet app so the message is visible on your screen
  2. Navigate away from the app, but keep it open in the background as you'll need to come back to it shortly.
  3. Open 'Settings' on your device.
  4. Navigate to the part of your settings that controls the size of the font on your device.
  5. Reduce the size of the font on your device - this will just be temporary
  6. Open the Mumsnet app again with the smaller font size - the text in the message should shrink and you should be able to select the 'Got it' button at the bottom of the message.
  7. Once the alert is gone you won't see it again unless you delete the app and reinstall it again. So you can navigate back to your device settings and change the font size back to what it was previously.

Really sorry about this! It's a temporary issue that will be fixed when we launch our new app very soon.

@AmeliaPMumsnet ive just altered my font/text size (it was set on "huge", that's my 57 year old eyes for you!) then reinstalled the app and I was able to view and press the Got it. I'm now into my beloved app again!!

Just to be clear - are you planning to fix this pop up or saying that it will be there until the new app is installed/available?

You must be aware that the common reason for increasing font size is due to sight/VI issues and that font size should have been considered when implementing a forced pop up with no close button. Was this tested with different font sizes?

We’re really sorry for the inconvenience this issue is causing. While we won’t be releasing a fix in the current version, we want to assure you that a new app is coming with our next release, which will resolve this.

That said, app releases do sometimes take several days to go through the review process in app stores, so unfortunately, we can’t push the fix immediately. In the meantime, we kindly ask that you use the workaround, and we truly appreciate your patience.

We test as much as possible across different settings, but unfortunately, this particular bug slipped through.

Indeed it worked for me - another font adjuster who doesnt wear contact lenses when she should do!

With respect, testing the impact on differing font sizes is very basic accessibility testing.

This is a recurring issue both with the website and the app. Users report issues with access and are given "workarounds" or better still, told to use ad blockers and that "we do lots of testing".

Accessibility testing is a specialist area - relying on one of the free providers who mainly just check tagging is poor. I would think it poor from a charity or NFP, its really poor from a commercial business - especially one enforcing the very features causing access issues to it's users.

I appreciate those of us using accessibility aids/software are a minority but MN has always claimed to be "supportive" despite failing to answer any of the access questions asked on other threads here about the new advertising model.

Why has the reply option disappeared? I can only do a quote reply on a post.

I assume the new app is to make it so you can't avoid accepting trashy cookies?
