Another thread on 'active' being destroyed

saraclara · 26/01/2025 22:06

A parent who posted about her children in care, on the fostering branch, is being ripped apart, unfairly.

This is only happening because her thread appears on active/trending/whatever, so people who have no idea about anything are abusing and judging her.

I've reported some posts, but what really needs to happen in these circumstances, is HQ quickly removing the thread title from active. Some particular branches' OPs need this kind of protection.

Can you please consider this?

It isn't the site it once was. The intellect and humour have become rarer.

Nothing on the internet is what I'd was because most of it is engagement farming and/or trolls looking to sow social discord.

saraclara · 26/01/2025 22:46

At the very least, if it can't be done automatically, when a thread like that one is reported, the person on duty should be able to manually remove it from trending.

Gosh, I totally agree. I saw that thread in trending and thought it was AIBU from the responses. Really awful.

I remember the fairly recent - 'if you like this thread, you might enjoy these' that often signposted sensitive (and not 'enjoyable') threads. That idea was removed pretty quickly after it was pointed out, so am sure it could be the same here?

Yep. And Elon Musk and his takeover of Twitter for those very reasons is making social media a very dark and disturbing place.

paddypipedown · 26/01/2025 22:48

Just read that thread. Some of the comments are appalling; the amount of ill-informed judgement is shocking.

I'm sure the OP is going through a horrible time emotionally and I can't believe how unkind people have been.

Well done @saraclara for creating this thread. You've restored my faith in humanity.

Crackanut · 26/01/2025 22:50

I agree. Some of the replies to those of us defending the OP are also unnecessarily aggressive.

louderthan · 26/01/2025 22:52

I agree 100%. That thread is horrible. Please implement these very sensible suggestions MNHQ.

Wheniwas · 26/01/2025 22:53

Having had a family member in a very similar situation, which was eventually resolved in their favour, I’ve found it quite distressing to see the manner in which people have piled on to the post.
The top post on trending really isn’t the place for Fostering.

Puppydog83 · 26/01/2025 22:53

Also by these sensitive posts appearing in active there's more chance of them being picked up by the media and used on other platforms including Facebook which then draws even more attention and just isn't fair.

ThatFlyIsMySpiritAnimal · 26/01/2025 22:55

Absolutely agree OP, that thread is horrendous and shouldn’t be anywhere near trending.

I don’t think they have a person on duty. There’s only nightwatch overnight who can hide a thread if it’s getting completely out of hand. But I don’t think they have any kind of rota, so may not necessarily be around.

Wallawallakoala · 26/01/2025 22:23

Completely agree. Is it now unsafe to post a genuine question without getting judged to the extreme and attacked when looking for sincere help about something specific. It’s taken a horrible turn.

Agree with this, the site is no longer a support forum.

rainbowunicorn · 26/01/2025 22:57

Agree with OP and pp the thread she is referring to is a disgrace. Mumsnet is the last place I would advise anyone to come for support. HQ really need to get a grip on this.

Apillthatmakesyousayalltherightstuff · 26/01/2025 23:01

Also agree, sensitive topics should be more protected.

Yes I would never ask anything on this site anymore. There's lots of stuff I'd love advice about but I made the mistake of posting once(different user name) and well, never again. It was on the step-parenting board so you can guess how that went.

ANiceBigCupOfTea · 26/01/2025 23:02

Totally agree. There should be a place for sensitive threads which aren't available for the circus of nasty posters wanting to stick the boot in.

LadyWiddiothethird · 26/01/2025 23:02

Ask night watch to hide the thread, until MNHQ can review it in the morning.

Tentententhen · 26/01/2025 23:02

@saraclara I do wholeheartedly agree with you ,trending has a really bad habit of highlighting threads that should remain with their smaller target audience…but sometimes( as in the one example you are picking up in your op) ,the op has more than one thread going on…if people have read the other thread( s) or older threads and have more of the story,or know the poster of old, it can bias them in one direction and make people more “ upset” or angry/ less tolerant than they should be.

comedycentral · 26/01/2025 23:05

Thanks for highlighting. Mumsnet is going downhill rapidly; I've lost count of the things I've reported recently. It's no longer a place of support. The press sniff around for stories; Mumsnet adds posts to emails and other social media; it's all about driving revenue through ads. I've never seen it this bad, and I've been here for a while.

GreekSun · 26/01/2025 23:06

The irony is that this thread is now in trending so probably sending more people to the other one.

I agree with you though.

Nope. That makes no difference at all to the point in my OP.

Threads on these sensitive subjects from vulnerable people in exceptionally difficult circumstances, when posted on their subject specific branches, should remain there. They should not be popularised by appearing on trending. Or if they do, and things start to go badly, there should be a mechanism within the report system, to get them removed from trending.

Ask night watch to hide the thread, until MNHQ can review it in the morning.

It's a huge 24hour site, there should be appropriate levels of moderation and oversight at all times.

Tentententhen · 26/01/2025 23:09

@saraclara the poster has also posted on AIBU. People read between the lines .

Yes. The night watch should be given the means to remove a thread from trending. Or better still, certain branches should automatically be blocked from trending.

If tonight's thread hasn't been trending, those posters wouldn't have known of its existence, hidden away in fostering, where it belongs.
You are still missing the point of my OP.
