Qatar ad

The Qatar ad is egregious. It covers your entire screen, you can’t scroll up or down, and there’s no way out but to go back or close the browser tab. Please can you get rid of this one?

Running Chrome on iOS on an iPhone.

It really does cover the whole screen and there’s no way to keep scrolling through a thread.

I usually use an ad blocker, this site is horrific with all the ads.

Hi OP

Thanks for flagging this - we're looking into it now.
Can we ask how often you're seeing this and if it's a particular area of the site, or all over?

Remaker · 27/12/2024 20:44

I came here to report this one too. I’m getting it on every thread I read. It pops up and there is no way out of it except to hit the back button and leave the thread. It’s making the site unusable for me. I’m also reading on my iPhone.

Warringahvoter · 27/12/2024 20:52

Agreed. It’s awful and on every thread. And you can’t do anything about it. No way to close it or scroll anywhere.

ps using an iPhone.

Well, once is one time too much. One would assume that a business as big as Mumsnet would have a slightly better grip on their own ads.

But presently it pops up on about 80% of threads and all over the site.

It has happened to me 4 or 5 times in last couple of minutes. It happened repeatedly on the last thread I was trying to read. I almost got stuck when I clicked on the picture of the ad that Op posted. It is making the Mumsnet site unusable.

ImustLearn2Cook · 28/12/2024 06:42

@LilyMumsnet Ok it just happened again on this thread when I tried to scroll down to trending.

TheSillyGoose · 28/12/2024 06:52

There is another thread with an ongoing discussion regarding mumsnet promoting a country with such horrific human rights abuses and sexism in its society.

It's not really something I would want to be affiliated with, given that mumsnet is supposed to support femisim!

Newmeagain · 28/12/2024 07:18

Yes, I just came on here to report this. I am also in an iPhone - once the Qatar ad pops up there is no way to keep reading a thread as the ad cannot be closed or scrolled past.

GinghamCheck · 28/12/2024 08:07

Am also reporting this. Am on iPhone safari and it is making Mumsnet completely unusable. Cannot close or minimise the ad.

MissedItByThisMuch · 28/12/2024 08:43

Just searched to see if someone had started a thread about this. It randomly pops up while scrolling threads every five minutes or so for me and as pp said can’t be closed. It’s made the site incredibly annoying if not completely unusable so I’m off to do something else now. On the plus side if it stays like this I will be wasting much less time scrolling MN!

Abundanceofquinces · 28/12/2024 21:21

I’m seeing the Visit Qatar ad every few minutes and it totally locks my screen (iPhone). I have to keep refreshing the browser. It’s making the site unusable.

MissJSmith · 28/12/2024 21:40

Totally agree. It gets too irritating refreshing the browser only for it to dominate the page again a few seconds later.
iPhone using both safari and chrome.

Warringahvoter · 28/12/2024 22:11

Why is it still there? Surely after 24/48 hours of it being an issue, it would either be fixed or taken down. I couldn’t read this thread as it covered the entire page so no idea if there is an update.

MissedItByThisMuch · 28/12/2024 23:07

Came back to see if it had been fixed, but it’s worse now. Every few minutes the stupid thing completely hijacks my screen and the only way to proceed is to exit the thread. FIX THIS MN or you will lose a significant number of your readers.

Porridgeislife · 29/12/2024 00:22

Yes, now worse than ever. It takes over on every single bloody thread.

OP posts:
ImustLearn2Cook · 29/12/2024 00:48

I hoped it would be fixed by now too. Though, yesterday I couldn’t even get back on this thread because it appeared immediately as soon as I tried to scroll down and read more posts. This time I clicked on see all then go to post. So, I’ve managed to read Op’s recent post and the one above it.

ImustLearn2Cook · 29/12/2024 01:02

Here’s a link to a reddit thread from 3 years ago complaining about a visit Qatar ad that dominated YouTube. Seems they have form for this.

Newmeagain · 29/12/2024 01:38

There is actually something quite symbolic about the fact that its a Qatar add that’s making mumsnet unusable.

SillyDoriswithaDangler · 29/12/2024 01:40

I posted on a thread about this yesterday, nothing has changed and if anything it’s worse. I’ve had to resort to using an ad blocking browser

Abundanceofquinces · 29/12/2024 03:34

I was about to post I think it’s fixed when it popped up again. And refreshing no longer gets rid of it. Grrr

Festivesorrow · 29/12/2024 05:02

Yep. I’m on an iPhone too and it is hijacking threads too. Any ad that does this has the opposite effect and makes me boycott whatever is being advertised. Mumsnet please fix this!

ArtichokeSurprise · 29/12/2024 07:07

Same. Site is virtually unusable on iPhone

FiveShelties · 29/12/2024 07:31

I don't have the Qatar ad but I do have a Porsche ad which does the same.

Newmeagain · 29/12/2024 11:17

@LilyMumsnet can this be fixed please? Ads are fine - but not when they actually stop the site being able to be used.
