We’ve listened to your feedback! While many of you have enjoyed the ‘Thanks’ button, you also told us that you'd love more ways to express your feelings on the site.

Starting today, you now have the choice of four reactions:
‘Agree’, ‘Love’, ‘Funny’, and ‘Thanks’.

Here’s how it works:

  • Select the ‘React’ button underneath the OP or reply.
  • Choose the reaction that reflects how you feel about the post.
  • Reactions are private and are only visible to the post owner.
  • You can select one reaction per post.

We hope this gives you even more ways to engage with posts and share how you feel.

Let us know your thoughts or any questions in the comments below!

When will the talk app improve? I can't do thanks at all. I can't vote on AIBU and I can't see all OP posts.

RoadToBeverly · 18/12/2024 14:14

But people will use the Laugh emoji to laugh at posts that aren't supposed to be funny in a bitchy way, as happens on Facebook. I think you should remove that one.

JaneJeffer · 18/12/2024 14:17

I can't see who the reaction is from like I could see thanks previously

VacuumPacked · 18/12/2024 14:18

but these icons do. not represent the ‘feelings’ you describe - ‘love’ maybe but an odd response from grown ups?

VictorianScreenTime · 18/12/2024 14:18

Ooh. I’m conflicted. I like the flexibility of more options but I felt the “thanks” was like a subtle but meaningful hand squeeze/head nod. I think it was more restrained and therefore more effective.

Essentialblindspots · 18/12/2024 14:19

I think this is a definite improvement thank you Mumsnet HQ.

Not altogether sure why reactions are private though?

Is the thinking that a like button visible to all would change the site too much, or discourage people from posting instead?

Currently, lots of people, including myself on occasion, quote the whole post and just say something like “I agree” so not sure what the difference is?

BlackChunkyBoots · 18/12/2024 14:19

Oh. I liked the thanks button.

yes, I was about to ‘thank’ you then hesitated - this new form is clumsy, cumbersome, limited despite the ‘options’ I wouldnt voluntarily use such hideous icons anyway, being a grown up ?!

GrumpyCactus · 18/12/2024 14:21

Seems like a pretty unnecessary update, thanks worked fine for people acknowledging they agreed with your post.

It also seems odd to put out a new feature whilst ignoring the repeated issues of the site regularly freezing and having to close the browser down because it's frozen and the page is not responding. Surely that should be a priority over this update?

JaneJeffer · 18/12/2024 14:23

How do we see who reacted? Is it anonymous? Preferred being able to see

BoreOfWhabylon · 18/12/2024 14:23

For crying out loud, will you just stop tinkering PLEASE!
Apart from anything else, I can no longer click to see who 'liked' my posts.

Dontletmedown · 18/12/2024 14:23

Yes I liked the Thanks button.
I liked being able to see who had Thanked me.
I think the heart emoji is totally trivialising.

Mickey79 · 18/12/2024 14:23

Great. I was hoping we’d get some more reactions.

AnyoneSomeone · 18/12/2024 14:24

Why can't you see who the reaction is from? Is that going to change?

Halsall · 18/12/2024 14:24

I think it’s childish.

AnyoneSomeone · 18/12/2024 14:25

I like it but preferred knowing who the thanks were from.

@KatyMumsnet how many users have told you this?

AnyoneSomeone · 18/12/2024 14:27

You can just ignore it if you don't like it. It's not compulsory to use it,

snowyglobe · 18/12/2024 14:31

I don’t understand which reaction is meant to be which. I can’t match the icons to the things you’ve listed.

Can I please use the Thanks button and have people know who is saying it to them? I don't want to send anyone an anonymous frog.

RegimentalSturgeon · 18/12/2024 14:32

I don’t think it being anonymous is a good idea. Expect complaints about callous and inappropriate use of the laugh emoji, for a start. Possibly the handclap as well.

BoreOfWhabylon · 18/12/2024 14:33

This is all so childish.
MN is supposed to be for chatting.
Just leave us to use our words.

AlbertCamusflage · 18/12/2024 14:34

Nice in principle, but the options seem to be:

  1. Tribal harrumph of approval
  2. Yeah ok.
  3. Aww hun xxx
  4. You are ridiculous.

All a bit harsh and parodical compared with the gentle 'thanks' option.

ComeOnThenFanny · 18/12/2024 14:34

Well I like it. And like a pp said, it's not compulsory. Just don't use it if you don't like it.
